No, not every customer does. Most 360 owners never buy XBLG and don't play online.

Indeed. And the 48 million "subscribers" that is so often misworded, is actually 48 million Xbox Live accounts, half of which are silver. 30 million people didn't even bother to make accounts.

while not every customer pays for online?

Contrary to that, paying for online should have been a lot more damaging than this...

This difference there is that up until very recently XBL absolutely obliterated PSN in terms of features and user experience -- and it arguably still does. People were willing to pay for the superior product. It was still a rip off, sure, but my iPad was a rip off too and I fucking love that thing.

When little Timmy can't sell his copy of Call of Duty: Future Brofare II and little Billy can, word will spread on the playground. Microsoft isn't dumb, contrary to what many may think. They know they can't get away with DRM if PS4 doesn't have it also.

I strongly doubt MS or Sony has signed any deals that obligate them to continue them to use DRM. That makes no business sense. Both MS and Sony have a TON of financial risk with these systems. It's far more than any publisher's games. They are going to want full control of their platform. EA and Activision aren't going to tell them what to do or hold them to any promises. The only deals that would make sense they've signed are exclusive deals. They wouldn't put stipulations on how their system works in those deals. It would be mind-bogglingly stupid.

I'm not sure. But from the info we have from famousmortimer there are no such deals in place for Sony, considering they're rumored to be sitting on the decision to use their DRM.

That would be. And it's certainly possible that Sony has signed such deals. I can almost guarantee Microsoft has, which is why I don't think they will back away from their policies unless they effectively have no choice.

There's no way to tell what deals Sony might have signed, but lets hope they haven't done anything that can't be reversed.

That would be great if they did not sign anything. No chance for publishers to take them to court (for breaking contracts).
That leaves the question will publishers punish them by ignoring PS4. Completely or just by more exclusive deals with MS (timed, DLC,...). I doubt publisher are strong enough to do this unless big players get together (EA, Activision, Ubisoft), but that is like getting MS, Sony and Nintendo to work together.

Time will tell...or E3

MARK CERNY'S STANCE ON DRM AS OF NOVEMBER 2012

Basically says the PS3 system is perfectly fine.

Thanks to Moxx19 for reminding me about the Game Changers vid. I watched it back when this DRM/Used games thing didn't even seem like a possibility so I didn't pay much attention to that part at the time.

Thought that it should be stated again for more people to see.

Anyways guys, even if it does seem like it won't be implemented on the PS4 (with the replies from the execs, the trolling etc). We still need to continue with this until an official announcement. This campaign isn't just for Sony.

Reposting from earlier. Getting the press to read through anything is difficult. So to anyone reaching out to the press, or trying to get this more exposure in general, I put this summary together: http://addresstherob.wordpress.com/2013/05/29/ps4-twitter-campaign-potential-press-coverage/. At a glance it should let them know the full extent of what we're trying to accomplish. BBC will be covering it as part of E3 and we're waiting to see if CNN publish an article. I tried one of the guys at The Verge but got no reply. As for who else to contact (not spam):

Quoted for new page. Cerny and EA's Rich Hilleman talk abit about DRM.

I've gotten the feeling that Cerny has been the one fighting against this from the start and is the reason it wasn't 'decided months or years ago' like a lot of people assume. I think Sony wants to get this right and have been diligent on every major decision about the console and I do believe a lot of these decisions are quite fluid. And sometimes they get handed things on a platter by MS inexplicably fumbling the ball in public.

I just woke up and caught up on the thread. I think Yosp trolling us is actually the most positive public sign yet. It doesn't 100% mean "HOORAY WE WON!!" but the man is not an idiot, you don't troll a huge number of fans you are about to really piss off. That's my gut feeling on that one.

Let's hope so. Cerny fighting against it would certainly be a good thing. The man is insanely clever and is pretty high up in terms of PS4 hardware (well, you can't get much higher than him in terms of hardware, lol).

And yeah, the Yosp trolling is a great acknowledgement. Shows that they hear the message. I'd be surprised if he'd do something like that if the news was bad.

So from that interview, I thought, maybe they'd put more emphasis into Playstation Plus, and keep making it worth the money. PS+ alone could cover a lot of their losses, I'd assume, but then maybe add benefits for registering products on PS+? That would be a cool way to unlock extras, or monetary points the same way companies like Nintendo do with their product registration, right?

Also, fixed up my Avatar.

Also, also, What if MS next console/Cable box is called the X-Box One X? XBOX? :D

I do think pressing ms is important. We know that these companies play very close attention to what competition is doing, and how they are performing. As such, while the focus on Sony should not abate, it is important to keep the press on that other company in the hopes we can steer their policy in a better direction, if for nothing more than to delay the acceptance of such measures.

Assuming that Sony not having DRM will somehow 'force' ms is, IMO, hopeful but backward thinking, as publishers eager to use used games as a scapegoat will jump on the MS bandwagon and, potentially, could force sony's hand down the line, if not right away.

That's why on top of this campaign, you vote with your wallet. Don't buy XBOX ONE, and for the publishers to jump off that bandwagon. :)

Excellent, get to tweetin' everybody.

Also, Rob, we've hit 17k unique visitors for the week now. I'm not sure how uniques are normally reported, by week or by day.

Unique visitors are measured based on the time frame you select, normally a month is the best way to count unique visitors.

Just wanted to stop by and say Thanks guys. I'm honestly surprised this has picked up this much steam. Reading through all the global articles is really something.

Very cool to be part of a community that can actually make some waves with something like this.

Keep it up!

I dunno about that. Cerny in that interview came across the really fucking doesnt like getting into the business side of games. He is a creator and all he wants to do is create. Most telling is when he was talking about focus tests. I wouldnt be surprised if he knew about it but washed his hands of the whole thing.

I know many enginners and creatives and they all have the same way about them. "We build the most beautiful thing we can, but make someone else sell it"

Easier said than done. Also, you want to be proactive, not reactive. Don't give them tacit approval of these policies, as you cannot guarantee they will fail outright.

Sure but we don't know how things will play out and if push comes to shove, it will be interesting to see if gamers have the spine to vote with their wallet.

I can't believe ign hasn't written an article about it. It's odd

Cash money baby!

Kotaku has written 3. Trying to get GAF back on their side, it seems.

The train is stopping.

We best get to mainstream press. Fast. Start the second wave, release the kraken.

Not necessarily, the dip there is because it update's with today's uniques in real time. If I were to take a pic at 11:59 PM the graph would look a lot different (it's noon here).

This. Gaming will be much better off if both companies drop this DRM garbage.

Again, the idea is to continue the press while widening the net--also helps as its not the same people being saturated with the same message ('spamming' per se. ) keep the hashtags the same so it continues to trend.
I agree with you. "vote with your wallet" applies to hardcore gamers who contrary to our echo chamber make a small (but important) percentage of consumers. What about all the aunts, uncles, grannies and mommies who are ready to buy xbox one for little timmy's Christmas present? They are the ones Microsoft is targeting, and they are the ones who simply do not care, or care to know about DRM and it's impact. MS is counting on the unwashed hordes and they are going to win doing so, regardless of how PS4 performs. It's going to set a precedent.

Man, seeing all of this makes me impatient for the conference and what they have for us especially with Yoshida's tweets.
