PS4's next software update, Masamune, will be available on 10/28

What is SharePlay?

And what are the chances this will "break" my PS4? I remember a Firmware Update for the PS3 that made my Tray useless (didn't "swallow" neither "spit" the disk) for a day until they fixed it with an update.

Will people pick up from where you are with shareplay, or will they start a new game despite you being in level 3 (for example).

The PS4 reveal showed it as basically just taking over the controller - in that example the point of it was to help someone get past a part they're stuck at. So I presume you just start where they left off

Not every single PS4 user downloaded/played Destiny; but every single PS4 user will download the firmware. I don't think it will break the PSN, but the download will be awfully slow surely :/

Why would this update be any slower than the previous firmwares, which were super quick to download?

Well you gotta draw the line somewhere. Sony, devs and other publishers aren't in the business of letting people play for free. Unless it's "F2P".

For "local" co op I don't see that as a valid concern though. Them playing by themselves, sure, whatever, because that's probably <1 hour sessions to get past a tough boss or something. But local co op A) is often in long sessions B) would result in them playing the game "for free" if it were physically local anyway and C) requires the presence of the content owner as well, it's not a free ride

Oh, so both won't play at the same time?

Allows you to play a game someone else owns for 1 hour at a time. Or allows you to let someone else play a game off your own library. They call it a " virtual couch " like when you invite a friend over and let him play a game you own.

Awesome that it is coming so soon

I need a Bloodborne theme, The Order theme, etc. Can't wait to see em

I don't want to seem like im spreading FUD in here, but I advise anyone to wait at least a day or two to update. Sony aren't the most relaible with this kind of stuff.

I don't like the idea of a time limit. Do you think it was publisher pressure on Sony?

More likely Sony not wanting to cause users to spend a lot of bandwidth if connection is left unattended. Remote Play can use more than 5mbits, which is already over 2.2 GB per hour. With timelimit they can solve that problem, and users can easily reconnect if they want.

I believe it's done on a system level - like remote play. Shouldn't require any effort from devs.

Yeah, it is a system feature. It will not be active only for games that require camera.

'Cause this one is a mayor one update and everyone will rush to try it? Tho, maybe the fact that it will be downloaded automatically will avoid the saturation. Dunno, it just seems possible to me; hopefully i'm wrong :)

Why can't Sony do monthly updates with interesting new features each time, like Microsoft does?

IMHO : Respective OS team sizes ?
I would not be surprized to learn that MS have ten times the number of devs behind their OS development compared to Sony...Also PS4 OS is developed from scratch whereas MS can count on windows kernel foundation.

No. S/He gets an hour to play the game then gets cut off then can start a new session and play another hour and so on.

Oh really? That's great! I thought it would be an hour a day only limit.

Of course it was (and Sony probably wanted this as well). Otherwise people would just leave their Playstations on to let friends play through games for free.

Got it, thanks. I imagine that for both to play together the game must have some sort of co-op and the developer has to implement the feature. Although I'm sure Sony will "demand" it.
What? Now every game on PS4 has to have local couch coop?

Edit: On second reading, no the game will just send inputs like remote play. The developers doesn't have to do anything to have that feature, as it's a system level feature. Maybe the publisher can disable Shareplay per title, the same way they can stop recording of certain scenes.

Question: Will SharePlay work for every game? Or only supported titles?

And I hope they add more avatars with this update. Or let us buy them like on PS3.

Just gotta uncheck the "update automatically" box on the Config or is there anything else to do to disable auto update?

If SharePlay works well it will be one of the best features of any console.

Agreed. It will be a nice substitute for demos, since it seems they're going out of style (unfortunately). My only concern is on how it might sway negatively someone. Imagine you see your friend playing a twitch shooter or something that relies on quick reflexes. I have no idea how much latency this service will add to the game.

You play the game and, even knowing it probably has some latency added to it, feel like it doesn't click and you dismiss the game. And that is using an informed person as a barometer. Imagine the same situation but with Joe six pack who knows jack shit about this. He will think the game is awful, the controls are sluggish and will probably pass up on it, due to having bad info.

This can either be very very good, if well implemented, or very bad.

It already happened in the past, people playing bad demos/sections of otherwise good games and feeling like that's all the game has to offer and don't buy it later and that without having to deal with latency and such.

No, all is handled via OS. You can play alone, you can "give" you DS4 to other player so that he can control action, or both of you can play couch coop game. Streaming of video and handling of gamepad controls is all handled via OS.

As far as I understood it, this is same as Remote Play. It works as background service, devs dont need to work on it because "it always works". [for RP they can optionally create new control schemes]

Whoa. Shareplay seems pretty cool, won't be getting a PS4 until January or so but excited to see impressions on this.

Does it require PS+ or something? Seems too good to be true.
