PS5 and PS4 System Software Updates release globally today​

Variable Refresh Rate support is coming to PS5 in the months ahead.​

Our next PS5 and PS4 system software updates are rolling out globally today, so we wanted to provide a quick look at some of the new features. We’re also glad to share new details on Variable Refresh Rate for PS5 on HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, which is planned to release in the months ahead.

New features for PS5 and PS4​

Thanks to support from our beta participants, we’re introducing some fan-requested features to our global community today, like the ability to create or join Open and Closed Parties on PS5 and PS4 consoles. On PS5, we’re also bringing UI enhancements to Game Base and Trophy cards, as well as accessibility features like mono audio for headphones.

PS5 players with accounts registered to the U.S. or U.K. will be able to test drive a Voice Command (Preview) feature that lets them find and open games, apps, and settings, as well as control media playback with their voice (English language setting only).

PS App and PS Remote Play enhancements​

Starting later today, we’re gradually rolling out the ability for PS App users to create or join Open and Closed Parties through the app as well. We’ve also updated the PS App Game Base UI to make it easier to access the Friends, Parties and messaging features, delivering a consistent player experience with PS5.

PS Remote Play mobile app users can enjoy a new “dark mode” based on their phone setting and choose from new Screen Reader languages for both iOS and Android, including Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Finnish, Swedish, Turkish, Greek, Thai and Chinese (traditional and simplified).

On the horizon: Variable Refresh Rate support for PS5​

We’re also pleased to share that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is planned to release on PS5 in the coming months. On HDMI 2.1-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render instantly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.

As an added option, you can also choose to apply VRR to PS5 games that don’t support it. This feature may improve video quality for some games. If this results in any unexpected visual effects, you can turn off this option at any time. Both VRR and this secondary option can be turned on or off.

Please note that results may vary depending on the TV you’re using and game you’re playing. As we get closer to the feature’s release, we’ll share more details, including some of the games that will enable VRR support through a game patch.

Unbelievable.
That is obvious there is nothing unbelievable.
It's just like they warned that not all PS4 games might work on PS5 or that not all SSDs would work.
There won't be issues in almost all cases.

At least now some people who have spread FUD about the HDMI output in the PS5 not supporting it because of hardware issues can have a rest :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Wondering if anyone here can answer this, see when you play a game in VRR and then your framerate goes below your devices lower VRR limit does the game always tear or does it depend on the VRR implementation?

As in freesync vs freesync premium or other types, will one be able to shut off and switch back to regular fixed refresh rate and have stutter due to missing the display window instead of a tear?

I've seen cheap TVs with 48-60 range and then LG says it can go down to 20s I think without tearing. When it's the "shitty" one, ie 48-60 is that the VRR part of the HDMI 2.1 spec and separate or its all different levels of freesync really?

As you know from Halo it doesn't always just work.

This is the same as them saying some ps4 games will work when in reality it's 99.9% of them.

It talks about patching support, it talks about future games "may" have support. It talks about turning it off for "unsupported" games.
That isn't as it stands "works for everything" like you are claiming, I hope it does work for everything or close to it as it should do.

That’s just Sony stating the obvious and covering there butts. It’s no different on Xbox, devs have to code for it to make the most out of it.

It was pretty obvious it was on the way thanks to ghost wire, but honestly this is such good news.

I dont quite get the wording around why you an apply it to any games?

But anyway, I am so hyped this is amazing news. Please just get it live ASAP it would be wack if it's like 2 years from launch.

Looks like my PS VR headset has a little more time before the box is unplugged etc, I have games to complete lol.

from that article I think that there is 2 way to enable VRR, first game is compatible with vrr ( meaning it probably has a unlimited framerate mode or a way to disable vsync) and the second one the game hasn't been updated for VRR and you can force it at system level.This may prevent problem with games that handle Vsync weirdly probably.

It's just Sony being Sony. Games written for (or patched for) the latest SDK will be VRR aware. Games written for older SDKs will not be VRR aware, you can still turn on VRR for these games but Sony won't/can't guarantee that 100% of previously released games will work without issue.

People have short memories but this is very similar to the situation with Boost Mode on PS4 Pro, where Sony allowed you to turn it off but in reality there was no reason to.

Yeah the Ghostwire and Tales of Arise results blow away the whole we don't need it narrative and Sony are stating the benefits clearly in this statement as I've been saying for a long time.
Hopefully it just works and they are being over cautious like with PS4 games working, I don't see why it would cause any problems as it doesn't on Xbox since the Xbox One years ago, if it doesn't work it doesn't make anything worse, so that's a strange one.

Honestly its pathetic trolling. I own both a Series X and PS5 and like them both equally (usually depending on the game of the moment, currently PS5 with HFW and Elden ring, but that will change). Really strange to be moaning about new features coming to either console. Its like you don't like games but love your plastic box.
Regarding consoles, I also have both and I'm looking to get Elden Ring soon. I've played a lot of Xbox recently and fancy playing it on PS5 but I'm finding it a little hard to choose that knowing there's no VRR, with the performance as it is. I hope we get VRR on PS5 sooner rather than later so who whole topic can be put to bed.

Urgo every game can have vrr enabled.

Now GTFO and come up with a new default response for your console warring.

Yes I think if they added this option (and how careful Sony are with updates) it means most titles should work without patch.
