PS5 Size Comparison

I'll take functionality over style though. The XSX is designed with cooling and nothing else in mind. I can't quite describe what Sony are going for here, but it's certainly bold.
I wouldn't say nothing else... They clearly want to maintain a similar look compared to the Xbox One consoles. I do agree that it is practical more than anything else. They made it cool well, easy to put together, and basically it doesn't draw that much attention if it's in your home. Not much more than an AV receiver would.

Sony did mention their cooling solution as being 'exotic', so their design is built around that as well. But I think part of Sony's design was to try to differentiate from Xbox as much as possible. The Xbox One consoles don't look too differently from the PS3 Slim and PS4 consoles. So it would make sense for Sony to go a bit wild here.

Absolutely and I hope that is the case (that there are no heat problems). But the curves and horns are the things that confuse me, the horns in particular as they serve no purpose (Other than style).

The fat bum for the drive would look better if it didn't curve back in and they just owned the fatness and used the extra space for airflow or something. I don't know.

I'm pretty sure the size isn't for aesthetics though. Sony wanted something console like so they probably made it this way to achieve that.

I personally don't believe that either system will suffer from overheating or RROD issues.

Yeah I'm looking forward to seeing what that exotic cooling solution is. And yeah, agreed, cooling wouldn't be the only thing MS were thinking but it seemed to be the lynchpin of their design.

Without the disc slot, I think PS5 looks quite nice (like a futuristic 360), but still beastly in size.

It looks like an overstuffed 3 ring binder. Like a hot pocket With its guts oozing out when you cut it. It honestly looks like it got run over with a car and the shell bent. I'll still get it though. But this is not a good design

The size of this thing is pretty big vertically but not unexpected or surprising to me. At least I won't have to keep a 4k bluray drive in my tv cabinet any more which is humongous. It'll just take its space. As long as its cool I say and 25%+ less quiet.

Looks like an early 2000 love child between the orignal white 360 and alienware.

I'm going to need a new stand for all these monsters.

PS fans: The Xbox is too big, it won't fit in my entertainment center and looks like a refrigerator

Also PS fans: The new PS5 is perfect.
Its easier to lay the PS5 down on its side and fit it in a cabinet, than it is the Xbox.
That's just what you get with a boxier design.

It's huge! Before seeing the image in the OP, I thought that it was around the size of the PlayStation 4 Pro. However, now that I've seen the image in the OP, I'm surprised; I can't believe that it's taller than the Xbox Series X. However, it looks elegant and stylish, though I hope that an entirely black version will be released.

Having said this, does anyone else think that the contrast between the white of the exterior and the black of the main body, as well as the protrusion of the white exterior from the main body, make the white exterior look like a shell?

Props to Xbox. They have some good engineers to have built something more powerful in a more compact package. But the PS5 still looks more beautiful.

The Xbox Series X is shorter, but I think that it's definitely more voluminous and hence larger.

It actually looks like the PS5 was shown with a stand when on its side, which will make it a bit taller, almost as tall as the XSX, while being a good bit wider and far deeper

The stand just evens out the machine; it's like a kick-stand for the curved part.

The machine should be only as tall as the white part when on it's side.

edit: nevermind I see the pics now looks like it actually does kinda balance on the stand by a bit, still doesn't look anywhere near as tall as XSX would be.

It's not really bigger, it's a much lower profile on it's side than the Series X and it's a lot less wide standing up than the series X. I never stand my consoles up I always lay them down, I don't see this having any issues laying on it's side in an entertainment center. Personally I'll be buying the digital version so it'll be even smaller.

I don't know man XSX is 6x6X12 at best PS5 horizontal is 15 longX4 highX I don't even know deep that's a huge console man.

It's huge, but overall I don't care about looks. Form factor doesn't matter in my case as I'm not using a media center.

One thing I noticed is that both consoles look better standing up.

Looking at that size comparison pic, I'm trying to determine just how much taller the PS5 is over the PS4 Pro. 3 inches? 5 inches?

There is only about 3 inches of space above my PS4 Pro that's vertical on the shelf. I don't think the PS5 is going to fit on that shelf under my TV vertically. Sure, I could lay it horizontally, but then there would be no room for the PS2 and PS3. I do still need to get, or fashion, a vertical stand for the PS2, but still, the PS5 ain't gonna fit.

A lot of this problem would have been solved if PS5 would have AT LEAST played PS1 and PS2 as well as PS4, but NOOOOO.

There's also the fact that my brother (a definite non-gamer) thinks my games are an eyesore, but sees nothing wrong with all his obsolete electronic junk, that just sits there unused, cluttering the entire house. I have to limit my stuff into a small confined area while his mostly useless crap is everywhere. But that's a whole other story for some rant thread somewhere......

I think looks great, size doesnt matter is the flow of the air that does, i rather it be bigger and less noisy then small and stuffed with 5 months in getting louder.

That's... huge. Not really a fan of it, at least for now. But it's not like other consoles are pretty, though, and that's not good at all.

I am not sure how accurate this comparison is. But the Xbox is definitely the odd man out. It is a block and look even more ridiculous horizontally. Unfortunately I do not think PS5 will come, what appear to be a stand ??

it's huge but i guess it's fine.

i just still can't get used to the ugly design though. it looks kinda decent standing up but lying down it's just god awful.

So you ARE concerned with looks after all.
Keep those mental gymnastics going.

Lol what? It was a joke. You had a dig at XSX and I engaged in banter 🤷🏻‍♂️

Edit: And yeah, I do care how it looks. Of course I do. My point you referenced is that I'm happy with the design of the XSX as you can see from the videos they designed it like that for a reason. I'd rather that than have some horns for the sake of horns but I'm not going to say no to something that does both. Not sure what your point is.

The size still baffles me.

to think there was a time people thought the XSX was going to be the monster sized console of the two.

Bigger, uglier and slower then the next gen Xbox. It's going to be a tough time being a Sony fanboy :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:

Virtually certain I'll wall mount mine either behind the TV or - depending on my setup - I may get a dedicated floating shelf for it.

All the size comparisons only reinforce my affinity for the phat PS3.

Looking at both versions, we see the stand of the discless is slightly different from the disc version, and both are quite simplistic pieces of plastic. I think it's safe to assume the stands are included with the consoles (also, they weren't listed as separate accessories in the accessories segment).

people complain their PS4 sound like a jet engine then now get upset because Sony is improving cooling which of course means a bigger console with larger heatsinks possibly more fans and better airflow.

i supposes if nobody can come in an be like iT sOuNds LiKe a JeT EnGiNe!!!11!!! then they have something new to complain about.
