PS5 "Slim" teardown by Dave2D

Overall it is quieter, Linus literally tells you that in the video. The slim is loudest at the right side at around 33.6 dBA. While the OG is loudest on the left side at around 33.8 dBA. But OG is louder in a larger area vs the smaller area in the slim which makes it sound quieter than the OG because they changed the internal volume and directionality of airflow design.

There is no point talking about how loud ps5 or slim is. The fact that Linus made it sound that it's audible from one direction or something is a joke.
My be quiet silent wings fans are louder idling at 700rpm than ps5 playing games

This is wrong. They didn't improve the sound profile over the 1200 series because guess what ? Its the 1200 series in a smaller shell.

I dont to listen to the data .or take my time to read it. Its what he said .

Obviously this is not enough. I will wait for more people to actually do proper testing.

And yes I hate the stupid design. It can't get any uglier.
if you are not going to base what you are saying on factual data, then stop saying it.

look at the damn graph. Its sound profile has been improved in every way.
The blue is the regular ps5 distributing the sir across the whole back of the unit. Where the slim is concentrated on one side . Both are at the same DBA give or take. Its what he said Linus that it's noiser on the slim if you listen to it from specific side
do you know the difference between wide area noise and directional noise? blue shows og PS5, and has an all-around louder profile across a wider area. Basically means in an over 180-degree area, it would sound equally as loud.

red of PS5slim shows that its only as loud as the og PS5 in a 45 deg window. That window happens to be the side that is facing the ground when horizontal or facing the back when vertical.

Thats what is kind of weird and begs the question why is the launch model so over engineered?

My theory is that they must've had some concerns with the cooling, so they gave it room to "breathe"

There is no way they were happy with the size, its simply too big for a console, so they must've had very good reasons for it

I think we can agree that you just don't like it by now. That aside, gonna address something you said here.

the more you talk, the more you are taking what LTT said about noise outta context. Unless you have the bottom of the PS5 right next to your ear, and by that I mean the side that has the disc drive, only then would you say it can get as loud as the older one. And that's the messed up thing about what you are saying, you are just twisting the facts.

the new PS5 only ever gets as loud as the older one in one scenario, it's never louder, but there are 4 scenarios in which the old PS5's sound profile is louder. take your time and understand the data. one side new one would sound just as oud, but 4 sides old one would sound louder.

And NO one, has the side of the PS5 that can be as loud as the loudest the og PS5 can be facing them. No one. Sony has actually improved the sound profile. they now have the noise going in the direction that would be least noticeable from the end user instead of in all directions.. And here you are trying to make it out to be a bad thing.

No it doesn't, look at the graph again and flip the PS5 Slim. The side that is "noisier" makes the same noise as the PS5 phat does on the other side. The slim is more quiet than the phat however you look at it.

Edit: I'll make it easier for you by including the image here

Thank you.

Its a damn shame this needs to even be explained.

Jesus Christ.

If you do it right the first time, there is no need for so many "revisions". I see those as fixes to problems that couldn't be addressed earlier in the cycle.
I think people are forgetting that the XSX GPU was clocked at 1.8ghz vs the 2.2ghz of the PS5. Have you seen the size of GPUs released in the last year? Can you imagine how much power MS left on the table because they refused to innovate on cooling and stuck to conventional console thermal design?

And revisions aren't always about correcting mistakes, its primarily about making the console cheaper to make.

Can you cut the bullshit ? Ps5 and slim vents are at the back. There is no noise to come from closed area of the ps5. And even there is any, if will be lower than the db mentioned and that goed for both systems / any system in the world.

Its you who is not understanding how is the noise is floating. All this graph is showing that all the center on the back of the ps5 fat is pushing air out at 33.8 db. The slim has smaller output at the back. Even though it's all vents as well, the hot air is also coming back from specific area at the back and not the whole back.

But both are are around the same db. He just stressed that at this specific area, it's louder on the slim than the original. At least listen to what he says .

There is no db gonna be out and loud from a place where the ps5 is not vented. That goes for both systems.

So no the ps5 is not louder. For all we know he probably has shitter fan too on the fat ps5.

Enough with this subject. Let's wait for an actual test results from gsmers nexus or someone who does more proper testing.

Yes yes, let me tell you that a very good friend of mine bought the phat model yesterday after watching the videos on you youtube. Let me know if you need more info. 😁
Very good, maybe you have more gullible friends that are willing to take my launch model too then ;). Smaller and MUCH lighter is a godsend for an entertainment centre / multi layered TV stand with the AV Receiver, Wii U, Switch, central Speaker channel, etc… but you be you ;).

Yeah exactly, it depends on the person specifically. For example, there are women who prefer bigger and heavier, other maybe not. There are men who like big b00bs, other not. But you are you.

I think it was a reasonable compromise to do to hit launch date without having any concern about heat and reliability: MS and shills would have wrecked them a new one if they had overheating and noise issues attacking the variable clock choice.

From all we know the PS5 HW was close enough to breaking even relatively close to launch and from the rumours mill the cost of making an XSX console was always considerably higher than PS5.

For me their strategy was to do what it takes to have a solid launch and since you know die shrinks are always only getting you so much these days be conservative on initial die size but make allowances for power reductions, further improvements to the airflow (they must collect a lot of metrics), as well as other components (such as the SSD setup where they are likely replacing a custom expensive setup with a higher bandwidth

Ok, so just trolling is the way you want to go about it. Fine, fill your boots.

Funny that you not owning a PS5 nor planning to ever buy one feel like trolling this thread, but hey you do you…

wow...

ok. I give up. My bad. this conversation.... was my mistake.I thought you were reasonable. And clearly, no matter how many people say it to you, you are hell-bent on doubling down on your hubris.

And you do realize you are basically saying the body panels of the PS5 is soundproof right? And sound can only come out of the vents.... lmao. and the area I am talking about, if you want me to be specific, is actually vented, its the same area that the power cable is plugged into. That is the same area that has the dis drive.

And the blatant hypocrisy of being fine with the data when you thought it meant one thing but now that you are being told it means something else you want a second opinion.

I was right. you do not read. I said the sound will come from the vents. and when it comes from the plastic around the device, its not going to be louder than your 33db that is coming from the back.

this is subject is seriously beyond stupid. the PS5 slim is as loud as the CFI 1200 give or take 1db depending on your apu lottery and fan lottery ( hell some fans will make your PS5 / slim much louder ).

it doesnt matter if its coming from the PS5's ass or anywhere else. the total measures of the system as far as we know so far is 33.x db. will need more testing to determine how quite or loud this thing is.

I would be more interested if it has coil whine or not.

"

its called .... wait for it.... the back of the fucking PS5 !!!

PS5 heat comes out from all the back of the PS5. the slim.. from one side only.... oooo... is that an improvement when the heat is from one side of the back and not the whole back ? lol. its the same DB.. I give up lol.

jesus fucing christ..then what was the point of all this? or you want me to quote what you were saying originally?
And noise directed to one channel at the back instead of multiple direction ventlation on the back makes it noiser . Check LTT where he said one side of the console is noiser than the fat ps5.

This thing sucks. Period.
how can something be fuckin noiser if at its loudest its only as loud as the previous model... and in one of 8 possible zones???!!!!!!

just... stop typing.. Thats what HE said. and how he said you may prefer the OG rather than the slim if the PS5 slim was close to your ear from the optical drive side. as its LOUDER from that side.

We done ?

You are being rather obtuse right now. The slim is louder from the right side compared to the OG which is louder from the left side. Depending on where you like to keep your PS5 you might prefer one over the other. The sound profile diagram shows that overall the Slim unit is quieter because the noise is loud from one side compared to the OG PS5 which has a larger noise radius around the unit. Which means the slim is quietter from all around. The highest measure of noise from the slim is slightly lower than the highest measure of noise from the OG but is within the margin of error even though the slim will appear quieter because it has a smaller noise radius.

Linus:
I'm over it because the results are good
Looking at the results, the original PS5 does a great job of making sure that all noise is directed towards the back of the unit rather than towards the user and that continues here
Both were so QUIET at idle and in the menu that they were below the noise floor of our EMC chamber

And in games, neither of them exceed more than 35dBA
But the characteristics of that sound was slightly different
With the original Ps5 having kind of an even emission of sound towards the back of the unit
And the slim ever so slightly QUIETER overall but louder on the side of the optical drive.

Its in the diagram. One is louder from the right with a smaller noise profile while the other is louder from the left with a larger noise profile. I know english may not be your first language but its not that hard to understand what is being shown here. Also none of this freaking matters because you aren't putting your PS5 18 inches from your head. Your PS5 is either by your TV or in a media cabinet.

The part "I don't own a ps5" is correct, but I don't understand why you feel like I will never get one. Please let me know more about my future if you know.

So, it still consumes the same amount of power? I was hoping for a much more efficient design. I will keep my original PS5.

BTW, now I am even more impressed with Series X engineers. It performs similar to the PS5 but it consumes up to 30% less power when running the same games. Without mentioning that is quieter and smaller.
They did amazing with the Series X compared to PS5. It's smaller. Looks better. It's far quieter as well. Just wish it had the games…

Those glossy plastic in upper half of white covers looks hideous. That glossy black front plastic part looks even worse. I literally don't understand why Sony did not make all matte finish on PS5 "Slim"

honestly, you shouldn't even bother anymore.

People just seem to be making things up apparently.

Not that it matters since both are indistinguishably silent, I just don't get why there seems to be this need to misinform to push personal agendas.

Yeah, that poster clearly needs help understating graphs, charts.

And I don't get it either, the need for hyperbole about noise.

Seems like the ghosts of pre launch, launch will never die for some ppl. Not doubting some ppl may have issues with their PS5, but compared to the PS4 or PS4 Pro it's alot quieter. Sony absolutely addressed that issue.

I find it weird not too many people got their hands on one. we are 3 days away from release. you would think more random videos pop up online but nope. I always get excited about the release of new console hardware from the big 3.

I might consider this ugly thing if they somehow eliminate the coil whine sound of the system ( which is to me more audible than a fan on my PS5) lol.

will need
1- black face plates not shiny
2- black decal in the middle so it doesn't get scratched.
3- a proper stand... eh then it will look good >_>

Honestly if I had to guess,

These two youtubers purchased it off the people who got it early from the military base.

These weren't sent them but probably reached out to those on Twitter or reddit and bought them off them

Yeah DBrand sent Linus his and Linus supposedly didn't know how they got it but I think DBrand got it from the guy who posted the first pictures as he tagged DBrand when someone asked about the plates on his regular PS5

I asked him if DBrand bought his new model since he pulled all his Tweets and he just gave me a smiley face response

Dbrand sent them the consoles kind of a FU to Sony

PS5 does have noise. Coil whine is reported by many people. I haven't heard any such nonsense with the Series X.
I had one returned because it was very loud though some say it was likely a paper tab they put on the wire plugging the fan in and I could easily fix it by removing the fan and taking off the tab

Was even easier just getting it replaced.

Who the fuck looks at the consoles anyway. It's the same spec wise so only a moron would upgrade if they already had a PS5. Wait for the pro it's only 1 year away

My kids' PS5 makes an audible noise when turned on. It's not a fan being hit by a sticker/paper, it's coil whine and it's annoying if the room noise is quiet enough. My Series X is dead silent. If it wasn't for the beep telling me it's turned on, I wouldn't know it's on.

Which proves that different people have different base noise levels for their environments. When going at full tilt you will hear the noise of the hair being pushed out of the grills. It is not much, but it is not impossible to tell it is on ;).

Still, cool whine if you are affected by it is worse.

I have 4 other PS5s with the one being replaced and I don't hear any of them and one is fairly close to me but also do not hear of my Series X consoles either

Errrr...

why do you have 5 PS5s?

And here I am trying to gift one to a children's home over here and there you are with 5 at home lol.

I meant I have 4 others including the exchanged one that make zero noise, just 4 in total.

But to answer your question I live part of the year in Indiana and most of the winter months in Jupiter FL and have one on main TVs at both places and one on my main gaming monitors at both houses
