I've never seen anything from Xbox Live unpack or install itself like the PSN downloads do.

And all PSN's "installing" is doing is literally unzipping the distributable package to the GAME folder.

they both unpack and install... interface is what is different.

As a longtime 360 owner and a new PS3 owner, let me just say... the PSN Store is an EXTREMELY pale comparison to XBLA.

But no matter how you compare them - the interface/shopping experience, the release frequency, the number of quality titles, the release breadth... XBLA trounces PSN.
I agree for the most part. PSN has been better w/the big titles (Tekken, Everyday Shooter, Warhawk) but the week in week out updates have been disappointing. Why the eff didn't PSN get the Smackdown or PES2008 demos? And for the most part whenever demos are on both PSN and Live, the latter gets them 1st. WTF? And the PS1 game list has been abysmal. What are we averaging now, about .8 PS1 games released per month? Spyro? WTF... where is Chrono Cross?

So where is the footer in OP this week? :) On the other hand, judging from quality of psn updates i suggest just to use this one as a permanent psn threads footer:

finally, i was able to access the store.

Toy Home looks like a fun game. And i'd love to buy Aqua Vita but i won't be getting Playstation Eye anytime soon :(

We've moved on thanks. Contrary to popular belief this isn't the PSN versus XBL thread. Also 8 ps1 games a month would be awesome! We should be so lucky.

Spyro is surprisingly fun after all these years. I wish they could somehow fix the weird way textures act in these games though. I know it's a PS1 game, but still.

So far, I think Spyro is the most playable of the PS1 games that are full 3D worlds.

WTF why does yurop get the motorstorm halloween stuff and we don't?

Besides receiving better sales in Europe IIRC, isn't Evolution Studios based over there? If so, I'm thinking its a bit of an olive branch, as Europe is generally screwed as far as dates go.

Seriously, you should not be complaining about the handful of times Europe gets something early or extra.

The AA and the cartoon aesthetic help a lot to make a smoother, more real-feeling world.

IIRC we got the Heavenly Sword (another English game) demo first too. It might have something to do with the way SCEW is structured now.

Amen.

Bought 2 for the team: Aqua Vita is kinda cute but entirely pointless, and Trials of Topoq involves moving around to raise mosaic tiles up that in turn move a ball around, and is as dull as it sounds. Eye Create is awesome.

Can't get EoJ to read my cards, tho. :(

Stupid question : has ninja gaiden been removed from the EU store ? I can't find it anywhere. the only related thing i find are the survival modes :/

Hmm, not even a trailer I'm interested in. Most updates in the last few months have had at least something, but like last week this one is a clunker. I was kinda hoping for a secret COD4 demo or something. It's nice to want things. :|

Dumbest question ever: What are the Japanese PS1 games like? All Japanese text?

Well, most are, but not all. A lot of the fighters and shmups available are perfectly playable without any Japanese knowledge.

The cartoon aesthetic helps the world feel real, please un-confuse me. :D

Sorry, you're right that was hideous wording! Speevy said that Spyro felt less clunky than other early PS1 games with 3D worlds. I was saying why I thought that was: improvement in image quality from the software AA, and the solidity of surfaces due to cartoon coloration as opposed to "realistic" noisy textures. (The LOD smoothness also helps.) Those elements tend to make the topography feel fully-rounded and like a persistent, consistent place, even if the PS1 tech makes clipping problems, pop-in, and polygon flex inevitable.

I should've said the cartoon style makes the world feel more solid, even if it doesn't look real.

So is Spyro still worth playing? Most playable PS1 game sounds good... But I find that aside from really abstract games like Mario 64, the early 3D era doesn't hold up too well. And I get the impression the PS1 was worse for than then the N64 just by the nature of the games on it.

What are you interested in? if you name a particular game i can give you info on how friendly it is.

What about Ape Escape?

Btw if anyone has any Japanese PS1 games, I can share some stuff. I had to cancel some trades last time because European games won't work on my TV.

My stuff:

-Everyday Shooter
-Locoroco
-Go! Sports Ski
-Spyro
-Wipeout
-Hot Shots Golf 2

Like Speevy says, it holds up pretty well visually, better than you'd expect from a PS1 game. That's comparative, though, so depending on your tolerance it might be hideous (and playing on a big ol' HDTV would probably hurt too). Gameplay-wise it's good but not particularly advanced--run around killing and jumping/flying. Still, there are always little bits to break up the general mechanics, and the Insomniac brand of humor is there.

If you like the Ratchet & Clank PS2 games, the Spyro games are very much the PS1 equivalent: not mindblowing, but really solid and enjoyable on both the technical and design sides. The sequels are better just like R&C, too. Less killing and much more platforming in the Spyro series, though; levels are generally "how do I get there from here?" rather than "how do I kill those guys fastest?"

(I should note that these impressions aren't from playing the PSN download, just from the last time I played the original release, about two years ago.)

Capcom stated that they are working on Super Puzzle Fighter for Europe and that they may add voice chat, something that should be a given. They mentioned that they may patch the NA released Super Puzzle Fighter to include it as well, something that I think should have been included from the beginning and I won't buy it until it has voice chat.
Any new word on this?

I also refuse to buy any PSN games that are online and don't support voice chat. It's fucking ridiculously lazy.

And i bought the folkore pack, it said it has a keats costume, finished the 2 quest and didnt get a costume?

I didn't read the op so the folklore pack thing got me all excited, but America is denied this time! They need to hurry up and bring all the Japanese goodies over.

Random question, but does the game-sharing work with people who are not on your friends list? I really, really hope so, b/c I think this is a pretty obvious level of security.

Oh yeah, is there a place to sign up for betas? If there is a LBP beta, I am gonna shoot someone in the face. PEACE.

EDIT: Seriously, I got some great stage ideas, and I'm a physics/geometry whiz.

Sign up for Playstation Underground and register your PS3. check the box that asks if you want to participate in BETA. Register for GAP once you get an invite. Then hope for the best.
