PSN on PS4- Will they finally fix it?

I have a 160gb slim and it downloads as slow as the old 60gb did on wi-fi. On Steam I average 4gb an hour and downloading a 10gb game on PS3 will take me around 4-5 hours usually. Not including the extra hour to install the damn thing.

I get faster download speeds on my PC but it has a wired conenction. My PS3 and 360 Slims are both connecting by wifi.

speeds for EmptySpace are as fast as the psn electrons allow. no cosmic radiation or solar flares ever disrupted the psn electrons.

I hope that improving/getting more download servers is where some of that PSN+ money is going to go to. I don't have a PS3, but with my Vita I usually get the same download limit (2-2.5 MB/s) that I get on my PC but sometimes it seems to connect to a slower server and I get far less. Pausing and resuming usually does the trick, though. Sometimes (and this happens on Steam as well) I'll randomly get 5.5 MB/s but I suspect this has more to do with my ISP's inconsistency.

It's tough to identify why exactly one particular person has shitty download speeds from whatever online service. I'm not sure PSN is actually that bad for most people, excepting isp/lan issues that aren't anything to do with Sony. Like my brother complaining about how his internet goes shitty when someone upstairs is using the microwave actually blames Netflix somehow lol.

At least for me, PSN downloads are usually about 5M/sec and have been for as long as I can remember (at least since I got a Docsis 3 modem a few years ago). No complaints here.

My PSN downloads have always been fast. If some people are getting fast speeds and some people are getting slow speeds then its most likely not on Sony's side. It's more than likely either an ISP issue or something just set a little off on the local home network, but my bet is on the ISP side (possibly a bad route, etc).

Fix what? For me PSN is way better than xbox live.. its free.

XBL is free as well. He's talking about download speeds, not online multiplayer.

My PS3 Fat has terrible issues downloading from PSN. My PS3 slim(the new one) has no such issues. I'm inclined to believe it's a hardware issue in the original PS3s.

I assumed this thread was going to be about the EU Store team not screwing something up every other week.
Nah, that won't happen.

The PSN store pisses me off. It always constantly freezes. When I download something it downloads fine. Its the store itself that sucks.

It gets slower the longer you use it. Until it finally freezes. But the PS3 in total is not really a stable system. Using the Home menu while playing a game is a constant gamble.

Is 3mbps slow? It feels like it. My speed varies from 300kbps to 3mbps. I just keep restarting my system until it gets a good download roll. There's too many variables for me to contribute.

I'd love for Sony to comment on this as I also notice this.

Even though our internet is not fast at all, I do notice the PS3 downloads things much slower than any other device in the house.

i forget - will my psn games work on ps4? no right?

No, the PS4 cannot play PS3 games due to completely different hardware architectures. Doesn't matter if the game is on a disc or in digital form, and it also doesn't matter if it's a huge AAA game or a small indie title. The PS4 simply cannot run PS3 games, period.

Really? I just started using it recently and it seemed fine. Better than the 360's and about the same as the Wii's.

I think it's pretty good, but it has one major drawback in that you cannot browse movies and shows by genre like you can on the website. On the PS3 you're stuck with the auto-populated categories (which only show 75 titles each) or searching for specific stuff. You can't just browse the catalog for something to watch, which sucks. The workaround is to browse on the PC, add stuff to your viewing list, and then watch it on the PS3.

PSN needs to be fixed? Is it broken? Hold on i'm gonna' log on...

Fake edit: Nope, all good here.

This "PSN sucks" is something i've only heard from americans, honestly, what's so dramatically different about your PSN experience from mine?

I really don't understand why console download speeds are so disappointing. Even GOG gives 10MB/s(Steam and Origin to the same).

Yep that is slow when even smaller companies can offer better speeds with stability(on pc).

my only problem with the psn is their damn store. It's so sluggish and its a pain in the ass to search for games. i hate it.

That's not PSN. That's PS3. Vita doesn't experience these issues. PS3 just isn't able to devote enough resources to its OS.

Some people have said it was just bad hardware in the PS3, but the Vita suffers the same absurdly slow speeds.

Some people have said it's a router issue. I've lived in 3 different places with 3 different providers and routers, and all of them give abysmal speeds on PSN whereas my PC and 360 absolutely blaze.

We're talking getting a solid 4.5 megabytes/sec on my PC and 360, while PSN will give me at most 700k/s but usually more along the lines of 200k/s.

I used to have low download speeds and an unstable connection on my PS3, and I went through three routers to see if I could fix the problem. Turns out, it was all caused by the old, original Xbox's network adapter being used on my 360. There's evidently quite a bit of interference between the two, because as soon as I removed it by chance one day, everything performed notably more fast and stable on the PS3. I haven't hooked my 360 back up to the internet (no Gold subscription anyway) since.

Have you tried testing your PS3/PSN performance with the 360 removed from the equation?

I have a 100mbit connection at home and a Super Slim. There are times when it takes up to a minute for the store to even load, much less for things to download. Sometimes I'll completely skip my PS+ games for the month just because I don't feel like trying to get to the store.

On the Vita it's MUCH better for me than the PS3. Navigation could be faster but overall pretty solid.

The PS4 needs to be a million times better than the PS3. I hate doing anything online on it because it's slow as shit

Fix what? For me PSN is way better than xbox live.. its free.
Read the op.

How many of you use wi-fi?

Isn't the PS3's wi-fi chip notoriously awful?

I'm on ethernet and get decent speeds, but then my internet isn't blazingly fast like some.

If Sony beat MS on OS software and network services on PS4 as thoroughly as they have in everything else, I wouldn't know what to say. Getting beaten by Google and Apple is one thing, but being beaten on software by Sony would be hard to live down.

Not sure about the speed of my PS3 downloads, but I average over 1MB/s on my Vita
byte, not bit. I have 30mb/s down
.

The trick is not to download in the background. You can't use the PS3 for anything else in the mean time but atleast it downloads a LOT faster.

This hasn't made a difference in any of the three different cities I've used PSN in.

My biggest concern about the PS4 and it's "all digital" initiative is in regards to the absolutely awful speeds of PSN.

They have had 7 years to fix it, but never did.

They don't even acknowledge it as a problem.

Has there been any official acknowledgement of this? Have they said there is a brand new infrastructure in place for the launch of the PS4?

This is entirely dependent on the size and distance of the server cluster from which you are downloading, and how many concurrent users are also connected. With time (now that it is a for pay service) they will likely add more servers around the globe to help this out, particularly with the Gaikai initiative starting next year.

Is this just about download speeds for buying digital games? I just buy it on the web store and have it auto download at night. I can wait until the next morning to play a game.

I honestly never had slow speeds on my PS3 since I picked it up in late 2011.

Infact, I've had slower installs than my downloads in most cases.

I've had games like Hitman Absolution download in an hour when PS+ updates overnight.

In other cases, I managed to download each instant game collection game for the July 2012 update and install them in 1.2 days. I left the system running on for that amount of time. That was about 88gbs of bandwidth gone.

And the speeds on my PSVita are even more exceptional.

Still, alot of people bring this up so it probably is a widespread issue.

I think they should address other things first, like the updating on tuesdays are so inconsistent and gives PSN a bad name overall even though SCEE AND SCEJ are consistent with their timing. SCEA is just a mess with tuesday updates.

Second thing is the preparing to download hanging problem on the vita where the system hangs. Ridiculous.

The few times a download has gone slow for me a complete download restart will usually "fix" it. Honestly it usually goes full speed for me.

I just started using an ethernet connection and the speed is like night and day compared to wifi. I started a download for Hitman Absolution and it said 13 minutes whereas on Wifi it would take 30min to an hour.

For me downloads are as fast as 360. The XMB is much more responsive than the 360 dash and isn't full of annoying ads. The store however is a slow piece of crap. The redesign made it worse.

I don't think the DL speeds are bad, but I think the whole Store is absolution crap. So gross trying to navigate through it.

Yeah, I have no problems either. I get pretty fast downloads, I can't complain.
And I use the internet store instead of the one on PS3, so for me everything it good.

Fix what? For me PSN is way better than xbox live.. its free.

I realize this is subjective, but this really isn't very accurate in my experience. You might consider it adequate, and you might not want to pay for XBL, but I really don't think there's any way it's better.

I just hate the way you have to download and then install. 360 does it all in one step and it does seem faster from beginning the download to playing the game/demo/whatever.

My dl speeds are okay. But I hate having to install anything after I download it. This can be anywhere from a couple of seconds to long as several minutes. I get people actually trying to brush this off saying, what's another couple of minutes. It seems like some people would defend anything. Hopefully on the PS4, everything is ready to go the second you finished d/ling something.

My PSN downloads are actually really, really fast. It's been many years since the service was slow for downloads, today content downloads as fast as stuff on my Xbox.

My download speeds are always super super fast over psn, i always find it funny when they are brought up as for me never an issue.

I don't think it was ever officially acknowledged by Sony but the Fat had speed issues. I don't know if it was the adapter or the software but it was hideously slow. It took an hour or so just to get 500MB. Everyone I knew with the Fat had the same problem and we just blamed it on PSN being free.

My friend's Fat died and he bought the Slim and all of the sudden his speeds were just as fast as his PC. My Fat died and I bought he Super Slim and now my speed is the same as well. Something changed internally on the newer systems and it wasn't PSN after all.

My complaint with PSN is how visually laggy it is. I like how it's organized but the "feel" of it is cheap. The menus lag and skip and makes the system feel weak. You mean you can have a game that looks as good as The Last of Us but you can't get text and menus to run correctly?

Get a better connection. I've lived in three different parts of NA with my PS3 over the past 7 years and never had an issue with slow speeds.

Can't say I've had any download speed issues on my Playstations outside of the occasional brief period of spottiness or rarer long period of Anonymous shitting on everyone's chips.

It's been great for the most part. Like, the last 'big' download I did was for Assassin's Creed 3 and all it's DLC (About 12GB total) and it was downloaded in the same amount of time it took me to watch Scary Movie 5.

Shit, I even get fast downloads on my PSP (45 mins or so to download and install both Corpse Party games last week. Almost 2GB between them), and that thing's ancient by this stage.

Contrast this with my 360 Elite, where I started a download for Max Payne 3 months ago and it STILL hasn't finished! I mean, sure, it doesn't have a working WiFi adapter plugged into it right now, but I feel the comparison is still a valid one.

I don't think speed is the problem. Data size might be.
Even with the same game or same patch, data size is always larger on ps3. So it takes longer.

In the end, I'm satisfied with my psn download speed. I had to put my ps3 IP in my router's DMZ though.

This is the one thing I'm looking forward to seeing. The PSN Store has always been a pain in the ass to use. Even more so now.

I just queue up my downloads on the SEN website and everything is automatically downloaded to my PS3. Simple enough.
