PSN on PS4- Will they finally fix it?

People keep saying PSN is slow as fuck, that maybe true a couple of years ago. Now its pretty much ok. What's atrocious is the install times.

psn has always been slow as all hell for me. Like the Op, this is across three different houses, each with multiple, different 'net providers. I'm in Australia, so I don't know if location is part of the problem, but I wont be paying for psn with the ps4 unless I know the speed has massively improved along with general connections to other players.

Ohh and install time? Jesus wept. I turned my 360 on the other night to play something and nearly cried tears of joy at the 4MB update which takes seconds to dl/install. I hope Sony don't get too carried away with how powerful their console is and put a hell of a lot more work into the OS/backend stuff.

The trick for that is never install a game while you're downloading something else. All your installs will go in seconds if you don't have an active download going.

This is true, I think even more so if you have a lot of stuff queued up. I got my new Slim and I just started downloading/installing everything and I got really worried that my new Slim was just a slow piece of crap. Having nothing download speeds it up tremendously.

PS4 will have a much much easier time doing multiple things at once, so install speed/download speed will be much more bearable.

from what ive seen psn was horrendously slow so im pretty shocked with everyone saying its fast, this is what ive seen with my bros and some friends it always seem slow

I use a wired connection and have no problems with download speeds, perhaps that is the issue. Maybe ps3 wireless sucks?

My PS3 slim downloads 1-2MB/s from the playstation store without issues and I'm connected wirelessly. Byte, not bit. I have had some issues in the past, most of the time I think it was because my router did not agree with my PS3.

It might. I think this is part of the reason games on psn always seemed to have more lag--people using a weak signal wireless connection. I haven't used wireless on with ps3 or 360. I've always forwarded ports etc etc. I honestly think that whatever hosting service psn is running through is a huge piece of shit Hopefully with the release of the PS4 Sony will at least put there hand up and tell us they're going to work on the problem. If this thread demonstrates one thing, it's that poor psn speeds are a problem for a good number of people. Hopefully it's something that can be fixed through a software patch, and isn't reliant on ISP hardware configurations.

I really hope they sort PSN out this time around. Nothing more annoying than having to keep checking up on a download every 20% to make sure it's still actually going up, and if not, manually pausing then resuming it. I mean, what on earth is that. I check the download rates and it never achieves the same as my computer (or my connections potential in general). And yes, it is wired.

I have zero speed issues with PSN, maybe it's faster in UK. But it's something I have never had trouble with.
I download a PSN+ full game in like an hour.

I download slow as shit on my PS3 and Vita, but I have a 50/25 fiber optics connection. I get fast speeds on every device except for those two.

My PS3 is inexplicably slow. My Vita is inexplicably fast.

On both, browsing the store is universally slow. It's slower on the ps3 though.

I hope they improve it. it isn't broken (IMO), so there's not too much to fix. I get fairly fast downloads from PSN, except for when they have big game releases or big sales. I do hope that they start to update PSN at a regular time, rather than the current 'whenever'.

Edit: also, like and few other people have said, my Vita downloads faster than my PS3. I think my PS3 downloaded faster prior to the new store though, so that might be part of the issue.

Still, seven years on I don't understand these slow speed problems. I personally have never had a slow download yet to this day, I am wireless with a router and have shitty Canadian internet.

exact same case here. Just recently download all of Deus Ex Human Revolution (free cuz PS+ :D) and got the whole game pretty fast.

what they need to fix is the netflix app... it's horrible.

I'm pretty sure (not positive) that Netflix develops the Netflix app, so you should bitch at them. What's issues are you having? I don't have any major problems with it, my only gripe is that they should let you manually select genres instead of automatically selecting them for you. Ridiculous.

Seriously GAF?

PSN Speeds are fucking abysmal.

I can get between 10-15mb/s from a MS server yet I get MAX 2mb/s from a Sony server.

EDIT: Say hello to your local I don't read the thread title or the OP poster

Fix what? For me PSN is way better than xbox live.. its free.

He said on PS4...where it's not free.

PSN has always been very quick for me, watching the downloads go by I must get at least 4mbps. I cant complain about that.

I personally would very much like to see some vids of those claim that PSN downloads feel like 56k.

Yeah, we're all just lying and hating on Sony Mega Corporation.... Read this thread, then maybe do a google search and read some more and you will find people complaining about shit psn speeds has been a 'feature' of psn for a long time. Asking us to waste our time making a video and uploading it just so you can complain about the pixels is pointless. Just because something doesn't effect you, doesn't mean the rest of us aren't suffering.

I'm sure Sony head office are proud of staunch denial of the problem though ....

These aren't even close to the problems with PSN:

1. No way to change name
2. Games don't download already patched up to the latest version
3. Not enough focus on classics, like they do in Japan
4. Lack of competitive pricing on a lot of games
5. Indistinct update time. There's a "day" but the time could be any time. Why have it only be weekly anyway?
6. No way to sort downloads list
7. Horrible store search UI on console

I'm sure there's more, people can add as they see fit.

If you're referencing the snappiness of the OS then I completely agree. The PS3 no doubt boots up faster than my X360, but once everything is loaded my Xbox is faster. The PS3 doesn't even seem to try and load the store so each page is excruciatingly drawn out.
Once an item is downloaded, the PS3 and X360 do fairly decent jobs at it, though I will say PS3 downloading "patches" takes FOR-EV-ER (for things like DCUO.)
I keep all of my consoles on an open port for gaming exclusively with MAC priority on each one.

I agree that Sony does need to work on the End User experience here. MS has made some missteps in this region as of late, but I still feel the experience is better on Xbox... for now.
EDIT: I will say that most people I know have this same issue... with a few Sony fans. I'm not saying they're in denial... just saying I've heard the counter argument that "Sony has a great store front experience." -Adam

My biggest concern about the PS4 and it's "all digital" initiative is in regards to the absolutely awful speeds of PSN.

They have had 7 years to fix it, but never did.

They don't even acknowledge it as a problem.

Some people have said it was just bad hardware in the PS3, but the Vita suffers the same absurdly slow speeds.

Some people have said it's a router issue. I've lived in 3 different places with 3 different providers and routers, and all of them give abysmal speeds on PSN whereas my PC and 360 absolutely blaze.

We're talking getting a solid 4.5 megabytes/sec on my PC and 360, while PSN will give me at most 700k/s but usually more along the lines of 200k/s.

Has there been any official acknowledgement of this? Have they said there is a brand new infrastructure in place for the launch of the PS4?

EDIT:To clarify everything I've tried:

I have used:

Comcast in San Francisco proper with a 6 megabyte per second plan.

Time Warner in Brooklyn with a 8 megabyte per second plan.

I've used both the wireless routers on the cable modems they've given me and two separate routers on both connections. I have also tried opening ports and putting the PS3 and Vita in the DMZ on all three routers.

I am not running any torrents at the time, or anything on any of my devices that use bandwidth.

I have tried both WiFi and directly connecting my PS3 to the router.

All other devices I've used in both cities (PC, 360, iPhone, Kindle, iPad) have maxed out my bandwidth to it's full potential. The only things that don't do this are the PS3 and the Vita.

PSN is not inherently slow.

What DNS settings are you using on PS3? Are they the same as your other devices?

How are your speeds from iTunes? PSN uses the same servers.

I seem to now have consistent fast download speed from my PS3 since it's conencted via Network cable now.

Other than the PSS which is a laggy pile of crap PSN is fine for me when it comes to playing online and downloading the only place it's bad is teaming up with friends but thats a PS3 problem mainly on vita it's fine so PS4 should be perfect in that aspect and so should the store now that it has the extra power from the machine to actually run well

Why sony are still using that new store on the PS3 IDK but they must know it's bad as the other stores like in game, transaction management download lists etc is still the old store

Their CDN is pretty poor. Sometimes you can cancel and re-start a download and it will download a lot quicker, there seems to be an element of luck as to whether you get a node that is quiet.

You can mostly offset the problem by using the web store and PSN+ auto downloads so you're not left waiting when you want to play but it's not exactly ideal.

I have BT Infinity 70mbit/s here, Steam etc. can saturate it. Wired connection. I actually got a small boost from making it use a local Squid proxy, which makes very little sense. It is always slower on store refresh days.

The only thing worse is Nintendo Network.

Everyone who is serious about online games knows that PSN was trash on PS3 - in many areas. I own both consoles, I there is no bias. Outside of gaming, DL speeds were bad as was simple things like waiting for trophies to sync. This is a big, big issue going into PS4. All the dedicated server confirmations for XB1 games and little to no talk from Sony on this issue also compounds this. I have little faith PSN will suddenly be "fixed". MS has been building their service for years and its only going to improve - Sony hasnt proven much and stuff like the "new" laggy and unintuitive PS3 store proves they still don't get it.. 360 was my online system, PS3 my single player system. I can see the same thing happening the next gen.

Mgs4 fat
Cox cable
15mbps
wireless

My speeds on psn are terrible. I've actually missed out on some games because I couldn't sit and wait for these patches to dl. I resorted to downloading them on my PC and installing via USB cuz it was so painful.

Same thing on my vita too. Took me 3 hrs to download FF7.

Xbox live blazes for me though.

I have never had speed or lag issues with my Ps3 so not sure why so many do. The only thing I can think of is people May need to check the MTU setting of their ISP as some do vary and the ps3 May be dropping packets. This can be adjusted is the consoles network settings.

People who say they have say '8mb' connection, do you know the difference between a MB (megabyte) and a Mb (megabit)?

If you have an 8Mb connection, you're only going to get 1mbps download speed.

Im in The Netherlands, but the PSN store is realy realy slow. Ive got a 60 mb/s connenction. But its worse than the old one

I still think its the PS3's fault, not PSN's.

I got lucky. It's always fast for me. And I've done multiple cities, routers and ISPs as well.

Only problem I ever had was Type 3 connections and a different router solved that.

I don't doubt that people are seeing bad speeds but I'm convinced the PS3 is "allergic" to a number of routers out there.

I have 2 PS3's in my house and my slim downloads just as fast as the 360 but the fat is way too slow and is useless at any downloading.

Same. Picked up a slim recently and the dl speeds are fine.

On the fat console i had before that I wouldn't even patch games because it would take 30 mins to an hour to complete, with a 30Mbps connection.

So how are the psn speeds going?

Well I noticed that I posted in this thread a few months ago about running ethernet down to my mancave/basement. I did that already and hooked up my PS4. I've been getting pretty good speeds I downloaded Resogun and Contrast in a matter of a few minutes. Before those downloads might of taken two or three times longer on my PS3 over a wireless connection.

I'm not sure if PSN servers are running better this gen or if it's due to me hooking up via ethernet but its' running better for me one way or the other.

I never had speed downloading problems with my PS3, except in very specific occasions, where it could be very congested. But almost ever I download my games at full speed.

May its a conflict between the console and the router??

My PS3 is connected directly by the cable, to guarantee the fastest and the most stable connection at it.

PSN runs perfectly fine for me.

Downloads also seemed to of doubled in speed on PS4 compared to PS3 but that could be because i am now hardwired instead of on WiFi. I have a old crappy router so..

My speeds sucked on the PS3. On PS4 AC4 downloaded and installed in under 10 minutes. I was impressed for something that size.

Edit: Oh yeah I'm wired now. Forgot about that. Makes a difference.

Figured I'd come say my speeds seem way better with the ps4. I felt like it would take hours to download some stuff from psn that was only a few gb. Contrast and flower both downloaded pretty quickly and I had the downloads going simultaneously.
