That's about as sincere as apologies get. If this had been Facebook, we would have gotten an update on Zuckerberg's page saying "oops, my bad. lolz."
 
I feel pretty bad for Kaz, that picture doesn't help. He seems like a decent guy and hasn't really done anything bad before this happened. He's had some funny meme worthy moments too.

Apparently someone at Joystick had their PSN+ account expire but still could play their PS1 games even though they have an expiration date.

So not sure but "officially" or what Sony posted and with the expiration under PS1 titles, they should expire with your membership.

Also, they won't give out Pain. Nobody likes Pain, and I'd rather have nothing.

It sounds as though current PS+ members are not going to be reimbursed for having lost 2-3 weeks of paid service. Instead, they are going to be given 4 weeks of free PS+. When you consider that 2-3 weeks of these 4 free weeks makes up for the 2-3 weeks of downtime that current PS+ customers have already paid for, it appears as though the only compensation that is being awarded to existing PS+ members is approximately 1-2 weeks of free PS+. Is this correct, or did SONY just not explain properly that they are giving one month of free PS+ in addition to re-imbursing paid PS+ members for the 2-3 weeks of downtime that has already happened. If it is the former, then non-PS+ members are being given one free month of PS+ while existing PS+ members are being given approximately 1-2 weeks of free PS+ which doesn't sound right to me. Apologies if this has already been discussed but damn, these PSN outage threads move fast...

After reading the CNET article, i get the impression that the author havnt seen the press conferance with Kaz. It seems to me that he only read the latest update on the PS Blog.

The service will be free for everyone during 30 days. But PS+ members get the service extended 30 days. I don't think they'll discount the days during the free period.

At least that's how I read it.

Not sure whats the big deal.

All PSN members are getting 1 free month of PSN+ plus other things to be noted.

The ones benefiting are regular users but Sony might release hot PSN+ content during that month to please those new users which would be good for us too, current members.

Yeah, I've been wondering how a PS1 classic can "expire". Doesn't that kind of communication with PSN have to built in? Do you always have to be signed in to play PS+ downloaded games?

I agree with you A.R.K. . it seemed like so many people felt it was cool to hate Sony this gen. I don't mind giving credit or scrutiny where due but Sony don't deserve the crapfest they receive every year. Dont like the games on it? Okay. Don't like PSN? that's okay. The console coated too much when it launched? Get over it. Still complaining about PS3 not coming with a headset? Stop whining. Don't you have a headset or Bluetooth set at home already?

This particular situation was a first for any console and even though they could have responded quicker, you can't knock them for handling a situation they never went through before. We don't know all the behind the scenes things that went on before they could say something. Corporations run different than a small private own business and yes, our accounts were at risk (not as high as most people complained), but it's always best to rest on the side of caution before causing a panic. At the end of the day, we are all human and need to have more empathy for others.

So Sony... About that freehand... ;)

Yep.

But in addition to this and the additional free Qriocity month for Qriocity subscribers, they said there will be more paid PSN stuff to download for free (to be announced starting this week I think). So the current PS+ and Qriocity members will have less compensation, but also will get the other PSN free stuff, that I assume there will be some PSN game or movies.

I too was concerned about this, as im a PS+ member. Seems unfair that paying members would seem to be worse off than non paying members. I'd like to find some clarification.

While PSN is down you don't lose access to your PS+ content. Instead of getting 12 months of content you're getting 13.

No, PSN+ content doesnt require for you to be online or have PSN running like now. If the days under the game reach Zero, the game will stop working. You cant get behind that.

Now for PS1 games, im guessing since they arent really PSN titles more like emulated "roms", maybe they dont have full PSN built into it like actual PS3 content. I dont know but if they remain free, even better! lol

Same here. This could have happened to either of the big 3. Now that Sony said there is no evidence of anon as the suspect this new group could have hit either. Sonys bad was not encrypting all personal data.

i welcome back our Sony overlords!!!

So, you are mad because you got your time down reimbursed, plus 2 additional weeks, get to participate in the additional free content as everyone and are upset because those of us who are not PS+ members get an additional 2 weeks?

As a PS+ member I just want PSN to come back on again so I can play with my PSN friends once again. >:(
 
What makes you guys so sure you've lost 2-3 weeks of PS+ time?

And do they email you when your sub expires? I haven't gotten an email for mine which should have ran out on April 24.

Nothing. You're not taking the saves off your machine when you upload them, you're just making a backup copy.

The worst part of this whole thing was anonymous releasing information of not only the execs but their children as well. That's a bigger offender than anything else out there. That is a line you don't cross and you fight man like a man, not like a coward; and it seriously doesn't make them any better than what they blamed Sony for what they did.

I know that, I meant if the backups will still be there if your subscription runs out.

I don't plan on buying a PSN+ sub but it will be nice knowing my saves are safe there for if I ever need to grab them I can just subscribe down the line.

Probably. They're only allowing 150 MB which is practically nothing to a large corporation. I have a 1.5 TB hard drive I got for $60 and that would be able to store over 10,000 people's saves on it for the price of only one of those user's subscriptions.

Yeah, I think they promise they'll keep them for six months after your subscription runs out, after that, no guarantees.

That rubbed me wrong, thats no where near equivalent to what ever they felt about the lawsuit.. after dealing with their own personal info being compromised (AND RELEASED) they get gobsmacked with this mess..rough month for Sony employees and Sony customers.
 
Looks like they offered as humbling an apology as anyone could give. There is no reason for me not to let it go.

That's not true, at least in a well designed system. Encryption is used to keep unauthorized users (both internal and external) from reading sensitive data, and is used to mitigate attacks against data at rest. In a well designed system, if you steal the database files, you can't read the encrypted data. Likewise, if you break into the database as a normal user you can't decrypt the data. If you steal the code, you can't read the encrypted data. Even having root on the DB server, you can't read the encrypted data.

It's not a silver bullet, because at some point someone needs to be able to decrypt the data and if that person's (or persons', if you're using split passwords) account is compromised you've got a problem. But it's quite a bit more than a CYA maneuver.
