And even if it wouldn't have changed much, I think that they could have made the press conference a week earlier, since they didn't present anything today that they didn't know then.
They gave their reasons for the conference today:
Q.4月27日に事実関係は分かったはずで,なぜその段階で会見しなかったのか?

A.(平井氏)実際問題として4月27日の段階で発表した「漏洩の可能性のある情報」は,その時点で判明していたもの。ただ,会見にあたっては「再開に向けてどういうスケジュールか」「再開にあたってどうサービスを展開するのか」「個人情報保護に向けてソニーがどう動くのか」といった点について情報をまとめつつ,保険会社などとも協議するなどして,最短のタイミングになったのが本日。

In short: the delay was not for how much they knew about the hacking, but because they were still deciding and coordinating the actions and measures that were going to be taken in response to the incident.

The turnaround here on gaf on this issue and the gaming community in general is really amazing.

the issue i am having right now is several PS3-owning friends texting me and fb-ing me talking about the hack like it happened yesterday and are going by all of the sensationalism that's still rampant on mainstream news sites and news on tv. those sources are trying to get as much attention as they can and it's just riling people up and causing unnecessary panick.

i have to individually explain everything to each friend and calm them down. my best friend, however, used his PSN password on something like 8 sites, including the associated email address with his account. 8 SITES. REALLY?!?!

at least i will give them some good advice on where to focus their free month of PS+ usage. :P

I still think they screwed up, badly, but good on them to trying to solve the issue.

however the damage is done, for instance when Nintendo stream/wii2 comes out, I most likely would trade in one of my consoles(360 and ps3) towards it, this accident just make the scenario of me trading in PS3 much more likely.

Trading in any console near the end of its life when the best software is coming out in exchange for a freshly launched system with barely any software doesn't seem like the best idea. I'd argue perhaps that the PS3 even has a brighter future at this point software-wise than the 360.

The rational response to Sony's mistake is to keep your credit card off the service. You aren't sending them a message by selling your console. You're depriving yourself of future use of something you purchased and can still extract value from. A lot of value, if you believe as I do that the next few years of PS3 will be at least as good if not better than the last couple.

Fixed for reality.
Yeah this is about right, I'm not going to keep a grudge for months because bad shit happened to them, they got hacked and are trying to take the necessary steps to fix the problem.

Tell them to use lastpass now!

No, I'm not really. But I spoke my mind and that's cool. :)
Im sure if you owned a site or were a console manufacturer, you would let some kids hack your shit to their hearts content since they are having fun, right?

How could you stay mad on someone after this? :)

Because they still compromised your identity and had an embarassing known weakness in their security?

If they knew about it, i'm pretty sure that they would have fixed it. Personally i dont think that it necessarily was lax security, but since we dont know much about what the exploit was, i cant really comment too much on that. But the pictures were mostly ment as lighthearted humor :)

My identiy wasnt compromised by the way since i used a name and adress that doesnt excist =) Pity that the hack happened regardless though, no doubt about that :(

And what was that embarrassing known weakness in the PSN's security? I'm not aware of any real details getting out.

They didn't tell the audience about what it was. Only that the rest of the world new about this vulnerability and Sony didn't.

Do you even understand what "known" infers?

Neogaf: SONY YOU SCREWED UP.
SONY: Sorry. (bow)
Neogaf: No, I'm sorry, for doubting you.

smh
there is a feverent back against the wall alamo mentality that the board's current crop of sony faithfuls so zealously wrap themselves warm in. this week has been a siege for them, causing cracks to appear in the membrane of cognitive dissonance that separates their rational faculties from the part of their brain that refuses to acknowledge that sony is a multinational corporation with zero interest in their personal well-being.

that bow had the effect of poly-filling all those cracks in an instant. a quick, sharp dose of positive reinforcement to kick the name "sony" back into their pleasure-centers, wired up and ready to start manufacturing uncharted 3 related endorphins just in time for e3.

sony is their drug, it'll take more than a few leaked details and a little psn cold turkey for them to find their bottom.

Poor Kaz =(

Hopefully this doesn't deter him from a live E3 appearance this year.

You don't get into a position like the one he's in by being a softy. I'm sure he'll be there.

No need to tell the audience if they already knew about it ;) Seriously though, just because it is a known vulnerability doesnt mean that everyone are able to use it to hack the system. Otherwise i guess that PSN would be hacked much sooner.

Humilty, staged or real plus a comprehensive package of compensatory measures has really helped.

Did they? All we know that it was hackers who did. Why are you getting defensive anyway if you're not the one who stole our CC and personal data?

UK and US accounts are bigger than the real userbase, because of european people making a US account to get some demos, or US people make an european account to get some demos.

There are not even 30M PS3 sold in US or 10 PS3 sold in UK.

Can you tell me what the correct course of action should have been?

Completely disregard Sonys explanation, compensation, and apology, file a class action lawsuit, sell our PS3s, burn our games, and then instill in our children that Sony is evil?

Sony said it was 1 hacker. So they must have some clue. They said up to 10 million credit cards info may be stoled, even they don't have anything that can confirm this.

They are working with FBI, some 9/11 guys, credit card companies and 2 leading on-line security companies investigating it.

you know. if that's the resources thrown into finding the culprit... It be a damn disgrace if they can't nail down the perpetrator.

I'm still mad, they screwed up and deserve losing all the money they'll definetly end losing at the end of this episode.

But I can certainly appreciate the effort they're doing (which is just marketing and we all know that deep bow was a facade but it was nice to see). The matter could certainly be even worse would they are dealing with it pretty nicely.

Hehe, perhaps :) But i think it is more about that people know that everyone can do mistakes (it is s afterall not like Sony tried to sell all the PSN info on the black market or something), and if those who do the mistakes shows that they are sorry, take the problem very serious and show that they take the right precautions so that it wont happened again (or at least that it is a much less chance for it, it isnt always possible to guarantee 100% security), then it is easier to forgive =)

They won't.

If it's one guy who's trying to be meticulously anonymous and he (or she) has the foresight not to do anything else with the info - they won't catch the hacker.

More than one hacker, and that's when things get interesting.
