I just wanna say, even with all this nonsense, I've had 2 friends, not in cahoots, buy their first PS3 WHILE PSN has been down. It certainly doesn't seem to be a deal breaker, they're just looking forward to it coming back up. I just thought it was a hilarious juxtaposition to the nerd-centric nay-saying happening on the internet.
They must have really outdated firmware. Hope they're prepared for quite a meaty update when it comes back!

Considering steam only added screenshot support recently, and Xfire still enabled video stream and recording... yeah. Not much point now except for the game time log. Steam needs to add that too for Non steam games.
Steam has been way behind in features for PC gaming compared to Xfire. It's funny how people think the community aspect of Steam is so revolutionary when it's practically a blatant half ripoff of Xfire with less features.

You don't have to download EVERY version of the firmware to upgrade... They should have the same update we will all have, though I imagine they've already been through at least one due to the newer released titles they have.

everyone's losing right now and it's kinda glorious. aside from the people that just want to play their PS3, which really really sucks. I think the internet drama is consolation though.

This whole thing seems like a game-changer (no pun intended) for sony and online networks in general. We forget that these huge ass networks that store our credit card data and personal info are still relatively new and have kinks we don't know about. It makes you wonder how many other companies are slacking on security just because they don't think anyone is stupid enough to target them. Maybe after this, new security protocols will come out to prevent these kinds of massive attacks.

I said that mostly in jest, but yeah, this should be a wake up call to other networks.

That said, with my summer job, I am waiting to see what Sony changes before I buy a PS3 (roommate moved away with his). I expect them to have a relatively secure system after this, although putting my credit card on any online gaming service is a thing of the past.

I thought the same thing at first, but then I realized that if they did get my CC info, I'd be too broke for them to get anything useful from me.
=(

I love it how every time we get some sort of bad news, its later proven to be false, or at least not as bad as everyone thinks.

Good or bad news depends the way you spin it :p

http://www.giantbomb.com/news/sony-...ing-may-31-deadline-for-psn-restoration/3149/

UPDATE: Sony has informed us that Bloomberg's wording, which was the foundation of this story, is inaccurate and the May 31 "deadline" does not exist. There does not appear to be any hard deadline established, only to return services as Sony determines the appropriate security measures are in place.

So services may not be fully restored by the end of May? That would be worse than what Bloomberg reported (that plans to have the service fully restored by the end of May are unchanged).

What are the conditions again to win? We just need some form of PSN to be up, or we need PSN to be fully up?

Well it was up in any capacity, but I stated full functionality for E3, but Wario still jsut threw me down for June 7.

Some form of PSN to be up is the condition (i.e. online gaming).
That has to be the case 'cause my prediction for "fully up" hasn't elapsed yet.

Just means that no underpromising is actually happening.
No firm deadlines have been set.
Sony's internal target for getting all of PSN up and functional remains the end of the month.
That's about it.

I know this is old, but I really don't like how Sony words their comments. They already missed two deadlines and now they're saying PSN will be back up when "the appropriate security measures are in place"? This basically sounds like they're just trying to prevent anyone from saying they should work faster or bring it back faster / as soon as possible, because Sony's response can always be "It's currently not as safe as we want it to be".

Missing a deadline is one thing, missing a second one is another, even worse thing, but just not giving anyone any idea about when the PSN will be back up is the worst.

Games purchased, Friend 1:
Castlevania
MVC3

Friend 2:
NBA 2k11
Mortal Kombat

Yea. The only upside to this outage for me is my friend has been forced to stop playing COD and instead we have been playing couch based mutliplayer in SSF4 and MK 9.

Those 10 -12 hours has been awesome, the rest of the 3 weeks .. not so much :P

LOL due to the outage, I thought about playing Final Fight or Magic Sword.... oh wait. Yeah I was bummed. Never again will I support any game that does that.

Spend the outage drawing more ponies. Belle Eve needs friends!

Due to the outage, me and my friends are busy practicing Soul Calibur 4, that way we can have a little tourney when PSN comes back on.

Not quite sure why we chose SC4 though. :P

Judging from this section of your post maybe Sony has learned they are terrible at making public deadlines so maybe they stopped setting them? Possible lesson learned?

... yea i doubt it too.

No, pretty sure ze booblies weren't the reason. If they were, I would have been the one to make the decision.

And in my case, it would have been Ivy's booblies. *CACKLE*

Published this afternoon on Edge Online.

Chris Svensson, Capcom Entertainment’s corporate officer and senior vice president, has said the continuing unavailability of PlayStation Network is costing the firm “hundreds of thousands, if not millions” in lost revenue.

In a post on the Capcom-Unity forums, Svensson said: “I’m frustrated and upset by [the outage] for a number of reasons. As a consumer, I also play games online on PS3, which I can’t do... and likely my personal information is also compromised. Secondly I like to buy things in the PlayStation Store and that I can’t do right now.

“As an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage [is] obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget. These are funds we rely on to bring new games to market for our fans.

And Capcom won't be the only ones feeling the cost of this.

The article also highlights something which I didn't realise. Due to the DRM of Bionic Commando 2 on the PS3 it is completely unplayable due to PSN being down. This draconian DRM makes me less sympathetic towards Capcom.

Well, if he brought Ace Attorney Investigations 2 over Capcom would swim in money right now and could compensate for any PSN losses. Trillions if not quadrillions of monies lost due to his short sightedness.

Do you have to go through the whole chain of firmware updates to get to the latest? I thought you only had to get the latest since the PS3 does an entire erase and rewrite of the firmware ( I am sure there is a better techinical term ).

It's a single download, so you don't have to do multiple updates.

Yep, i'm pretty sure you only need to download one firmware version. And if they bought a PS3 new these days, the PS3 is most likely on firmware 3.50 or 3.55, so there isnt much they have missed firmware related.

Because if you ban Hilde it's a good game, and the new SC gets announced Wednesday? (probably a year off I think)

We haven't banned Hilde, but that little green mexican jumping bean was.

Wonder if they pulled back from the weekend plan of getting back online due to a potential third attack. It could basically go whenever .. I hope.

I don't think it makes it "not as bad as everyone thinks". Actually it's worse. The original planning was "first results within a week, PS store at the end of the month". The Bloomberg article said "we missed the first deadline, but the second one still stands".
Now Sony says "sorry, but we have no real deadline". So they can't even promise anything for May 31st, a deadline that they gave us to begin with.

Eurogamer reporting it should be up "within the next couple of days"

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-05-09-psn-matchmaking-back-in-next-few-days

Sony plans to bring PlayStation Network matchmaking back online within the next couple of days, according to a trusted Eurogamer source.

When contacted for comment, SCE corporate communications director Patrick Seybold told Eurogamer, "We're working to get the network back on as soon as we can."

Meanwhile, a PlayStation Europe community manager has confirmed that Sony intends to get online gaming back up and running before other PSN services.

"Once again, 31st May is the date for FULL restoration of PSN services. Restoration is phased. Online gaming will return BEFORE May 31st," read a post on MusterBuster's Twitter feed earlier today.

Over the weekend, a Sony spokesperson warned that full PSN service might not return until 31st May.

Portal 2 local co-op is really good as well. Much better than over the internet.

The servers that the hackers were reportedly targeting in the Cnet article were left up after Sony pulled PSN completely down. So one could ASSume that the targeted servers aren't tied to PSN and thus wouldn't directly affect PSN if they were attacked. So I am not sold that this supposed third attack was the reason PSN didn't get a phoenix like rebirth this weekend.

Thanks for the suggestion and the nugget of info. I have been living in a self imposed media blackout on Portal 2. I am going to have to keep that in mind.

Wow....

April 30th - US blog
SNEI will continue to reinforce and verify security for transactions before resuming the PlayStation®Store and other Qriocity operations, scheduled for this month.

May 5th - US blog
As previously mentioned, we’ve been working around the clock to rebuild the network and enhance protections of your personal data. It’s our top priority to ensure your data is safe when you begin using the services again.

May 6th - US blog
As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects.

It is amazing reading some of the same things over and over in this thread. Sony never gave "deadlines" they gave windows but has always put emphasis on security concerns being the mitigating factor (that means there has never been any deadlines).

And some people think there has been a third attack? Unless I missed something there wasn't even a second attack.

Since I don't really play online much this hasn't affected me as badly as I imagined. But yesterday my PS+ "expired" so now I'm locked out of some of my games. :(
