Looking back at my May 3 bet, I look flat out ridiculous. I should never go to Vegas.

We didn't know at the time that Sony would be lying out their asses.

We do, however, know that Vegas lies out their asses.

he's saying the 360 version is, although we haven't seen that version of the game yet. based on how these things usually go, he's probably right that the ps3 is the "best" version of the game, but we don't know what kind of divide, if any, there will be other than the # of discs.

My girlfriend has decided to get LA Noire for 360 because of this mess though for many of the same reasons the other poster listed... she was on the fence about it but this whole PSN mess pushed her to the 360 side.
I'm very curious on how well the 360 version turns out given the PS3 was the lead platform, and if there are any issues with movie quality ala FFXIII.

It would be pointless for them to remove the ability to edit your DNS servers - because anyone with a DHCP server (i.e. any router) could just define the DNS there and let that propagate to the PS3. Or is Sony talking about running their own DNS and requiring all PS3s to only use that DNS??

cool. no i haven't heard anything about it, but ever since i switched to OpenDNS everything to do with PSN on my unit has been waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay faster than with comcast DNS. i would be pissed if they just up and decided to keep us from using custom DNS because they felt it might make it more secure.

i've tried putting the DNS in my router before but it didn't seem to have the same affect as setting it on each machine. thanks for reminding me i still need to learn and acquire my network certification. :(

i'll put my derp hat on now.

It didn't really look like there were many movies based on the trailers I've seen... most looks like real-time cutscenes, which I'm personally hoping for anyway.

On this topic of superior/inferior versions, does GAF have a dedicated thread which explains which version of a game is best to buy, while summarising the flaws? Or can I be directed to a place that does this in a simple manner?

To add some context:

- I don't really know or understand the technical stuff that much. All I know is framerate and screen tearing. One is what makes the game stutter or slowdown I believe and the other is when the picture doesn't really line up.

- I have both a PS3 and 360. I use the PS3 for online gaming as I don't want to pay for online. This leaves single player games only.

- I generally tend to buy PS3 games when they're multi-platform because I have an older brother who I occasionally lend games to. I recently bought Assassins Creed 2 on the PS3 because I can imagine him enjoying that. But something like Fallout 3, I understand, doesn't run very well on the PS3 and I can't see him enjoying it either, so I'll likely buy it on my 360.

- I genuinely don't care about little differences. I'm only interested if there's a significant performance difference. Do you know of The Last Remnant for example? It's a 360 game which runs like crap. Now imagine there were two versions of this game and one ran like that, and one ran much better. In that scenario, the version I buy really matters because one is just really bad.

Any help would be much appreciated.

If there isn't an OT for this type of topic, there should be. I'd love to know what people think about different versions of games.

Yeah, you're more than likely right. Really wish people could be neutral in a topic like that and just discuss it openly and honestly with being all ZOMG! about a specific console.

Same here. I want the store up more than playing others online part.

Can you give some examples on why he consider both situations so different?

Specifically, he mentioned that Amazon handled the downtime really well by writing this huge blog post detailing causes of failures, the specific things that Amazon tried to fix, etc. Basically they made the entire failure transparent and explained it all to their customers, in a way that demonstrated that they knew what happened and that they were knowledgeable enough to fix it quickly and handle any such failures in the future. The professor specifically mentioned that although some sites were down for a number of days, explaining the entire situation probably gained them lifetime customers and/or won people on the edge.

The professor mentioned that Sony, on the other hand, continually used vague and imprecise language and refused to detail anything about the situation.

Dear playstation,

I have a 4 day weekend. Please get the damn network up already!

Sadly, I never got around to playing KZ3 online. Just as I was about to for the first time, they pulled the plug...

The PS3 is the lead platform, as it was originally a PS3 exclusive. The only footage of the game has been shown on PS3. If Rockstar has shown anything this gen, its that they show the superior version of the game in videos. Also there is the disc issue. It's one Blu Ray on PS3, but three DVD's on 360. Honestly, I think it will be fine on both consoles, but with the PS3 version you aren't going in blindly as tons of footage has been shown. We haven't seen a lick of footage for 360.

So, your paying 30 grand a semester to attend MIT and your professor choses this as his topic of discussion? Sounds like a great bang for you buck there.

http://misterslimm.wordpress.com/360-vs-ps3/xbox-360-vs-ps3-head-to-head-face-off-results/

That blog has a list of all of the games that have been compared by Digital Foundry on Eurogamer, Lens of Truth and IGN Insider. The blog takes the Digital Foundry result as the defining one where the games have been tested by multiple sites, and you can also click the icon next to any of the games to go to the specific article where the games are compared.

For more recent games, you can hover your mouse over the icon next to the game and read a very brief summary of why one version was deemed to be better than the other.

In a perfect world, that's the way it would be. Of course, in a perfect world, devs would optimize the game for each console, making them equal in the first place.

Isn't a good thing that the professor is using current events instead of reusing some horrendously outdated example?

Haha, considering it was the last lecture for the class, I'm sure he didn't want to cover some completely new topic. Great lecture though.

Truth on that one. We shouldn't have to settle for an inferior version of a game. Should be an even playing field.

It was understandable in the beginning because of how hard the PS3 was to program for, and the fact that the 360 had a year head start, but now there's really no excuse.

Imagine having spent over 2k and it going bust. Not that you can't play the games without being online.

Whoops forgot about Capcom crap DRM decisions.

Again, I doubt it would. Fanboys will troll wherever possible, and only the threats of bans in the OT would do that.

A simple mod warning in the OP that comparison discussion should be directed to the comparison OT is all that would be needed.

Think Forza 3 vs. GT5, only on a grander scale. :p

Games on Steam can be played in offline mode. Of course online games that use the steam inferstructure like TF2 would still suffer, but most games would probably be fine.

If it wasn't for the competition Sony would still have us in the online dark ages where even the basic features are poorly implemented. Despite a lot of the shit MS has brought to the console market I am extremely grateful for how well they brought online and social gaming to the forefront.

I could only imagine an online system dominated by Nintendo and Sony *shudders*

I dunno at least it's free. I can take a few less features for free. But yeah, obviously online is the thing Microsoft does the best at among the three. XBL is the most enjoyable service for me by far. All my friends use it and it's easy to see why. That said, one way or another Sony would eventually come around. Next up: Removing the retarded de-bubbling feature of their downloads from their network. This is not good design, Sony.

There was a time when I thought Microsoft really changed their fate and came up with the least bad system of the three competitors (I hated Xbox; I really liked Xbox 360 for a while. Recently, though, since Kinect they jumped off the deep end).

Now I don't really know who I prefer since they are all doing things I find equally appalling. I'm not even sure I can find a lesser of all evils at this point.

Save for the PC, of course. Were it not for the PC Master Gaming Race I'd go mad with all the fuck ups from the console manufacturers. At least to Sony's credit, their first party is absolutely dominating this gen as far as I'm concerned and they are just continually investing in new fire. I love that they're not afraid of trying new things and making new hardcore IPs. This is the first gen I think I've ever overall preferred anybody first party offerings to Nintendo, but that is where we're at. It's a remarkable time.

I fully expect Stream to be Nintendo's return to form, though, so I suspect that crown will be Sony's for only a very short time.

Why wouldn't he give a current event/discussion for Technology classes at Massachusetts Institute for Technology?

It's relevant for IT classes anywhere, even if there is little to go by right now. Discussing it with other examples is fine. "MIT" or not. Stop being a jackass.

Sometimes it's the small differences that matter if you're paying the same price for a game. I particularly cannot stand screen tearing, but because the PS3 has the bulk of my overall trophy/achievement progression, I tend to sacrifice the visual and technical luxuries that generally come with Xbox 360 versions.

Lens of truth is a site dedicated to such technical comparisons http://www.lensoftruth.com/

At this point I'm not even waiting for it to come back up. Kind of indifferent. Been playing Minecraft and a couple other games a lot lately.

it's the only reason I remain anticipatory of PSN's return! Oh that and I need to re-download Vagrant Story...

You have amazing restraint. I think if I were unable to have synched up my Portal 2 on day 1 to play on PC I would have broken down long ago and just bought a steam copy.

They have to have it up before next Tuesday. I mean, LA Noire is being advertised exclusively by Sony along with the extra PS3 bonus case...which can't be redeemed. Unless it's on the disc, which I doubt since most PS3 exclusive content has been in the PS store.

ppl wouldn't be able to set ground rules or try and set rules that always favours their console of choice. for example you're only allowed to use 360 non hdd load times etc. - as LoT does.

I hope PSN goes down again when it goes back up. Since I don't care anymore, I wish PSN gets nuked and Sony goes 3rd party because of this. One less console to worry about and everyone wins.

Sony's had less bumps in the road than most other platform holders and this is the thanks you show them? I've been angry about this as much as the next guy but it takes a sane person to know when to push and when to forgive. I'm going to do my part by spending $80 on PSN when it comes back up and I suggest you do the same... I suggest everyone of the 77 million users do the same. Imagine what 1.6 billion dollars can do for a company like Sony after this kind of crisis. We should all be thinking about what we can do to help. If Sony goes down, could you seriously live with all those lost jobs on your head? My friend always said people in stone glasses can't through houses. He was right in many ways even though he was wrong in the head; I knew what he meant. You could learn a thing or two about optimism from him.

Even an OT just for Digital Foundry's comparisons would suffice. His reasoning for choosing one platform over the other is bound to attract discussion on whether or not it actually matters.
