It must be decompressing as it receiving the data. And this is not a novel idea either.

Before tar was mentioned, so just throw a gz, bzip or 7zip on that and that functionality is there. And tar is at least 24 years old.
Demos, or Games on Demand, on Xbox Live are glorified iso files. Once they are downloaded they are instantly ready. No installation required but to put the file(s) in the right directory, basically.

Why should we have to spend $80 in PSN funny money? Sony hasn't helped me in protecting my identity yet, and they did a piss poor job communicating us about how our personal information was stolen. Can't help this joke of a company if they're not willing to help me out first.

What sort of explanation do you want? I'm not seriously expecting them to give us a detailed post-mortem of the hack and subsequent rebuilding of the network, rife with technical information that would-be hackers could exploit. Not only that, but you'd also have every armchair techie and forum wonk out there reading things into any info they provide. That kind of crap is fine if you're a fan of forum drama and retardation gone wild, but not so great for the rest of us.

I'm fine with 'Hackers found a hole in our security and we're rebuilding our network to eliminate that hole and tighten security across the board. We'll have things back up and running as soon as possible.' Getting the shakes from PS:P2 withdrawal, maybe, but still fine. Though I really hope this doesn't drag on for too much longer. :/

I always found the install after downloads annoying. Some times a relatively small file will take FOREVER to install.

Another thing that annoys me with PS3 (and 360) is how you have to wait for the game list to load, I managed to make my PS3 faster at start up by separating the games by type and thus the loading of game icons in the list only starts when you click a folder.

My PS1 classics folder has like 9 games and it takes upwards of 30 seconds for all of them to pop up.

That happens when you have other stuff downloading in the background while installing.

I specifically remember downloading something, I think it might have been folklore DLC? and it downloaded pretty quick but the install took quite awhile for the file size in comparison.

I am pretty sure I did not have anything else downloading at the same time because I usually only download single items at a time unless I bulk download demos.

My first guess was maybe older content on the PSN store used a different(slower) method or compressed the data.

Sony's had less bumps in the road than most other platform holders and this is the thanks you show them? I've been angry about this as much as the next guy but it takes a sane person to know when to push and when to forgive. I'm going to do my part by spending $80 on PSN when it comes back up and I suggest you do the same... I suggest everyone of the 77 million users do the same. Imagine what 1.6 billion dollars can do for a company like Sony after this kind of crisis. We should all be thinking about what we can do to help. If Sony goes down, could you seriously live with all those lost jobs on your head? My friend always said people in stone glasses can't through houses. He was right in many ways even though he was wrong in the head; I knew what he meant. You could learn a thing or two about optimism from him.

Holy shit! This is an actual, serious post.

30 second sounds like something is wrong there. I have far more games on the 360 and that loads extremely fast... well, compared to 30 seconds :/

Well... obviously... there's a PSN card
and they's raping everybody out there!
. Look, I said when it's up. Of course you can't buy things from PSN yet but if you buy the prepaid cards then you can make sure the money gets to Sony as soon as possible. Every bit helps.

Someone count all the words in all three topics then compare it against classic novels. This way everyone that has been through the entirety of the threads can know just what a waste it has been on their minds. A forum fiend's /played. Someone do this. Someone that isn't me.

Is this the start of a new GAF meme, the "I'm an Expert" version 2.0?

The fuck is stone glass can't through houses?

Are you trying to say "people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones", and what is supposed to be the glass house? the PS3? the person living in their house? I'm perplexed

So your suggesting that we as Gamers should shower a mega-corporation with a "Make it Rain" approach to show Sony that we are behind them?

I'm flabbergasted...I just...What is this I don't even....Fuck it....

I thought it was obvious. That post is nothing but distilled wisdom.

I pray to God this is a joke post

I believe, "He was right in many ways even though he was wrong in the head; I knew what he meant" was intended to imply that his friend got the adage the wrong way around.

I have no idea how it applies to his "we should be nice to Sony!" stance, nor his friends supposed optimism, though.

It's a shame how people quoting that post fail to realise just how much wisdom okenny's friend possesses.

People in stone glasses can't through houses, indeed. Respect. For okenny's friend. Who is right, even when wrong in the head.

This is like the greatest thing I've ever read. You seriously need to go line by line and explain this post, because every bit is jam-packed with crazy. Fight on, console warrior. Fight on.

Has Valve ever come out and said anything about this PSN outage? I can't remember them ever really saying anything. Anyways, they had a sale this week at Albertson for Aluminum Foil so I bought two 18 inch by 75 feet heavy duty tubes. Being I have all this tin foil to play with (and I'm 12), I started getting this strange idea that the extra down time was to add full steamworks support on top of PSN hence the reason why Valve is staying mum (never mind the assumption part). What are the chances of this happening?

I vote for optimistically slim

Chances are better that Sony would come out and announce that Steam has replaced PSN. Just like that, they'd have a a more feature-rich service, free of all the clunkiness of PSN, and, best of all, Sony would have minimal involvement in it.

In reality, though, I bet Valve is trying to distance themselves from Sony as much as possible right now. They don't need any of this PR disaster spilling over into their downloadable service.

Also, you can ignore the replies all you want, but you're not going to live this down:
