PSNation Hands On MLB 14 The Show PS4 Video Interview/Article

OH SHUCKY DUCKY...

Looks fantastic.

Impressive, but for me how great it looks makes the missing bits more glaring. Lack of distortion to the infield dirt, no dirt clouds etc. Still buying and will hold it up as impressive, but maybe next time the dirt moves too.
I don't get this, this game is such a massive jump and one of the most impressive next gen games there is and some people seems to be only looking for every little flaw they could find like everything must be absolutely perfect and all that amazing tech aren't enough if there isn't a dirt cloud or some white boy sits next to a black guy, why all that nitpicking?
Some people can never be satisfied :/

The way the catcher's gear clips through his body is totally unacceptable. Time to wait til next year when hopefully the uniform fabric physics won't suck.

(totally kidding by the way.... that's seriously the only thing to nitpick about in the whole clip, so I just had to go for it)

So how beginner friendly is this game? NBA2K14 was such a scammy piece of shit even though the base game was good I couldn't be bothered to play it anymore.

It actually has a Beginner Mode that walks you through the game and rules etc.

Also, to everyone, this video is not from the final code, so hold some judgment on small items until it hits. A lot of that stuff is added during the optimization process, and I personally saw particle effects (clumps of dirt being kicked-up etc) when I was playing.

Wow, I can't believe people keep bringing this microtransaction stuff up. There's nothing in the game that needs to be purchased. They give you the option to purchase additional stubs, but they can be earned, and nothing available to buy with Stubs is vital to the game.

This just blows my mind

I never said I wouldn't be satisfied or happy to buy the game, huge fan of the series in fact. The issue here is though, the game looks so good in many ways, but how great it looks makes the issues stand out more. It's like a girl who is a 7 looks like a 5 next to a girl who is a 10.

Look at the video above, looks great right? How about how silly the guy on the steps on the left looks as he walks up them and is stepping WAY to many times or worse, the guy on the right on the stairs who starts to float up.

WHy would you be watching the guy walking up the steps when you're pitching the ball?

Also, video's aren't from the final version of the game, pick your nits when the game is final

Admittedly I'm browsing my phone, but wow that looks incredible.

That's what I don't get. While it's definitely a flaw and it would be nice to have it fixed, is it something that's going to hurt my experience WHILE PLAYING? Hell no, I wouldn't even notice because I'm focused on the game.

It's a lot easier to dissect things right here as we're not playing, just analyzing. I think the good far outweighs the bad and a guy walking up the steps isn't going to even be noticed by me ingame (well, except now it will be so thanks assholes.)

Right, so with that argument maybe we should just make the entire crowd area a black square since you won't look at it.

Big Sony fan here, owned them all as day one purchases, but I try to be objective. The game has noticeable flaws, and if you can't see that you are blind or a fanboy to the nth degree. Will it still possibly be an 8+, absolutely, but that doesn't mean it can't have criticisms leveled at it.

When everything else looks stellar (a few animation issues outstanding) things like that in the crowd really stand out and break the immersion.

I was hoping the PS4 version would have smoother and continuous follow-throughs for swings, but I see some of the herky-jerky animations from the PS3 still remain. A bit disappointing.

The animation of his right foot uncurling off the dirt is stunning.

If I wasn't sold on this game already, this would've been the clip that did it. I can't wait to see this in full HD at 60fps.

Does the PS4 version play and feel differently from its PS3 counterpart or is it just a prettier version of it? Example - NBA 2K14 for the PS4/XBO isn't just a graphical upgrade. The on-court action does play and feel much different from the PS3/360 iterations. In your time with The Show, did you feel a difference in physics and such or no?

Yeah, most of the animations are INCREDIBLE, but then some of the transitions between them not being as perfect, kinda breaks it. This will be the problem as things get closer and closer to looking real; It really highlights the seams and rough spots.

Can't unsee levitating guy on the right, and stuggling step climber on the left!

Certainly something we will be working on in the future...

Along with the crowd members on the steps. :)

Totally agree with you about the transitions. It is something we are constantly working on improving under the constraints we have...some of those constraints being the AI or player controlling the players and deciding frame by frame what to do next, if that makes sense.

Totally understandable. I don't envy that job!

I strongly disagree with this line of thinking. Immersion is one of this games major selling points and anything that breaks it - like levitating fans in the background - is going to be, rightfully, criticized.

EDIT: After I posted the above, I saw Mlb_Animator replied to my previous post.

Thanks for replying! You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear this. If The Show had a major flaw on PS3, it was the herky-jerky transitions between animations. I look forward to the day they're history.

It makes perfect sense, especially given the fact that you're on a yearly schedule. I really wish The Show was released every TWO years (with roster updates in between) to provide SSDS the time it needed to make real improvements to the gameplay/presentation. That said, give your lighting guy/girl a raise! Awesome work.

Actually I just realized who that guy is that is levitating, it is not a flaw, it is real!!!

David Blaine, I'm not impressed. Call me when you be moonwalking up those stairs.

Also, I'm at maximum anticipation for this game. I need it NOW.

I started playing baseball games that looked like this:

Criticizing that clip, and saying that it's immersion breaking makes my jaw hit the floor.

Dat ghosting. :/

That YouTube :/

I didn't see this thread here so I posted this interview in the MLB OT.

What really interested me regarding the video is the work they are putting into online. It's broken badly now.

Well, I'm sure they'll make a patch to fix the levitating fan. LOL

MLB's Levitating Fan is more realistic than Madden's cardboard copy-n-paste fans.

just saying...
