god it's so amazing that they really didn't learn anything from the PS3 (and PSP, to an extent). No, consumers are NOT going to automatically jump on board for your hideously overpriced gaming dedicated platform. It's a toy for games. price it like a toy for games. $250 is too expensive; $300+ is just absurd.
if I was a shareholder for Sony i would be crying myself asleep tonight
I'm with you on that. First, the size/design will exclude non hardcore gamers. Girls won't buy a PSP2. Too bad, there are now a significant part of the market. Beyond the form factor, prices will prove too high for casuals.
On the other hand, psp owners remain potential PSP2 buyers. CoD alone could add 10 millions of fans who didn't care for a psp before.
And more importantly, the touchscreen combined with the app store will build solid foundations for the future.
Sure, Nintendo will win its bet with 3D.
And 3DS will certainly sell much better than PSP2. But unlike Sony they won't go far beyond gaming without being able to replicate an App Store.
Smartphones have an edge over devices like the PSP now, because of the phone. But it could change in the future once more and more people use skype/what'sapp and such cross platform communication tools.
And so I could see Sony be ready for the next, broader fight, with the NGP2/PSP3.
Sony is seeing long term. I'm impressed with their move, it is led by a vision.
