Psychonauts coming to PS4 this Spring

didnt realize it ever came out on ps2. hope xbone gets it as well at some point, i never played the original

I may actually get to finish this game now. I liked a lot of what I played on the PC version, but I feel like this might be the kind of game that I'd feel more at home playing on consoles. Probably a MENTAL BARRIER of some sort.

Now I really hope it's this PC version you guys are talking about:

Tim Schafer via reddit AMA said:
There were two main errors I made with Meat Circus. When some people said it was too hard, I asked my lead tester what he thought. "No way! It's my favorite level," he said. Forgot that testers are unnaturally skilled at games, especially ones they play over and over. Not his fault--mine. Secondly, I asked our lead designer what he thought, and he said, "Well, it's hard, but I think it's good that the game has at least one really hard level." Which I understand, but looking back, it probably should have had one medium hard level before it at least. :) Third thing was there were some bugs that made it harder than it should be. So when we got the pub rights back to it and updated it for Steam we fixed those bugs and made a couple other changes. We left it hard, but not too hard I think, and people who play it on Steam have responded well to the changes.

I had the Ps2 version of this game on disc, managed t beat it(fuck you Meat Circus), only to have the game freeze and crash during the ending. I then gifted the game to a friend's kid and looked up the ending on youtube a couple years later.

I'm hoping this is the PC version with the apparently easier Meat Circus so I can finally right that wrong.

I bought it on steam years ago, it doesn't run too well on my Macbook and the controls suck. I hope the PS2 version was better, if so i'll probably grab this.

So how is the PC version? 60fps?

Depends on your PC

But given that it's an old game, it will most likely be 60 fps unless your computer is really bad (and/or you insist on doing something crazy like running the game at 4k)

Are you running the Mac port? If you have access to bootcamp, try the PC version. It's a looooot better optimized.

If it's emulated then fuck that. I'll just play the PC or Mac version. But if it's a proper port then I'm all in, since I greatly prefer the console platform for performers.

why???
This will not turn profits....don't believe for one second.
It's just a quick port of a cult classic platformer. It'll make some money for Double Fine, just like all (?) of their classic game releases have made money for them (I assume). They just got 3,3+ million dollars for Psychonauts 2 through their crowdfunding site. There's clearly interest in the IP.

Oh I just beat the game on PC last month. I greatly prefer playing on my PS4, only if I knew this was coming... Not gonna double dip that soon. Great game regardless!

Those screenshots look great to me. Stop whining gee wiz

You guys keep complaining about the OG PS2 version when the emulator will obviously address issues like loading speed, frame rate and overall visual fidelity

Eehhhhh, the PS2 port though

Would've been day 1 for a proper PS4 port of the PC version, but this.... Let's see what the "bells and whistles" are.

They said so in the stream they were doing before the Fig campaign ended

Well, that is unfortunate, the PS2 version was an outsourced port.
Eugh, that's surprising actually. You'd think with the PS4's PC-friendly architecture, porting the PC version might have been more straight forward. Juicing up the tattered PS2 port seems like *more* work.

I'm still purchasing it regardless. The screens do look great as well, but it just sounds like they're re-doing a lot of the improvements already available in the Steam version.

I've been wanting to play Psychonauts for years*, so I'll definitely be picking this up.

* (I know it's on PC, but I do enjoy some quality comfy couch gaming, especially with a platformer! My PC is very much not near the couch.)

PC Port is impossible. They lost a ton of assets and a lot of other key components in order to port it. This is literally the only option. What would be MORE work is rebuilding it from the ground up.

What are all those positive posts ?

This is a shit version. It's uglier, and glitchy as hell.

The Steam pc version got a recent update with HD resolutions, full pad control, fixed gtliches etc... it's the absolute way to go.

Like any TOASTER runs this game in full hd 60 fps, so please don't act like the ps2 version was any good...

Not to mention, like all the ps2 classics, if you're in EU, they are selling shit versions made out of the 50hz code.

Hell fucking yes. Can't wait to hear what's been improved.

NOTHING.

If you want the great and improved version, get that Steam version.

Isn't there another method of porting games using the final code on the disk that yields better results at the expense of a more arduous process? I thought I remember Bluepoint talking about that. Didn't they do the MGS HD collection that way?

Bells and whistles sound like the standard sort of trophy support/uprez kind of stuff. Kind of a bummer since that means it's still gonna have awful textures and shit even if somehow the resolution and framerate are fixed (which seems reasonable). This was the tail end of that generation, almost any multiplat that was primarily PC or Xbox looked rough on PS2, and this one one of the more notable ones in the port actually just being bad... Maybe not splinter cell level, but still not good.

No that is compiled code. The source code isn't just sitting there and animation data is gone into the abyss.

BP had MGS source code. Easy Peezy Port.

Why in hell would they port the PS2 version over PC?

IIRC the PS2 version doesn't show your character's shadow which makes some platforming harder than it should be. Oh well, I'll still buy it the day it's available, seems like it wouldn't have been any harder to port the PC version though.

Edit: Guess it's not possible? I don't know anything about programming but it's so strange to me that you can buy the game on Steam right now but somehow source code is still needed to do a port. Those "missing" animations are still in the game!

BP did some other game via reverse engineering though. They did talk about it, but I can't remember what game it was.

How is DF improving the steam version of the game if they don't have the source code though? How was the Mac port made? (it may have been a wrapper)
The post made on PS blog that this will be an emulated version comes from their community manager, but I wonder if he's high enough in the info chain to know something like this for sure, this early.

Got this game for $5 during the Steam winter sale and loved every bit of it. It's aged well.

edit: errr, my memory sucks, I actually only spent $1 on it.

And its regularly on sale for $1

Seriously. No excuses. Its super old and runs on just about anything

Yep. Totally worth it. I still have my PC boxed copy. Runs like a dream on any PC built after 2006 pretty much. Just plug in a 360 controller and have a blast. Still looks good too, PC version aged really well.
