Psychonauts is available on PSN right now

Looks pretty good to me although I've not played it before so don't have anything to compare it to.

EDIT:
Damn, I'm like molasses going up hill in January...with crutches. :(

This is widescreen.

EDIT:
This is a JPEG so it;s not lossless.

I seriously doubt the console versions were widescreen. Back in the day you had to manually edit an .ini file to make the PC version widescreen and even with the updated steam version with native widescreen support it stretches the HUD and FMVs.

Hmm, the screens do look like the PS2 emulated up-rendered thing. Not full 1080p, but definitely much higher than the original 640x400. Maybe the emulator now supports the widescreen somehow. I'm also surprised by the specular highlights on the custodian's eyes. I'd be surprised if the PS2 version had that.

Seems like higher resolution but is way choppier than I remember. Don't buy this expecting a new experience or something, it's just nice to have on my ps4 really. 5 years since my last playthrough so I will play through it anyways :)

Choppy? Come on DF, don't do this shit to me.

You're probably better off just getting the game on Steam, it'll play on damn near anything looking and performing better than this weird PS2 version, on a PC or Mac.

I have the Mac version, and feel that it's a technical mess tbh. I just can't get it running at stable framerate no matter how low I set the resolution.

The game is running in widescreen for me. I don't believe the original did.

EDIT: Pre-rendered cutscenes are widescreen as well. It doesn't look stretched or zoomed as far as I can tell.

So what exactly is this?

An enhanced port of the PS2 version?

It's the same as all the other PS2 games on PS4, only they decided to force the game to render in widescreen. Whether or not this means older PS2/PS4 games will be updated for widescreen, I'm not sure.

I can confirm the game still runs at a choppy framerate, but load times have only lasted a few short seconds so far.

What about the cutscenes? If they are not stretched, they are either re-rendered in widescreen now, or their top and bottom would have to be cropped, and the resulting upscaling macroblocking would be insanely bad.

Also, forcing widescreen through emulation is not trivial at all. That's actually a pretty exciting development.

As soon as more news about this port becomes available I'm buying it. I haven't played Psychonauts since it came out on Xbox and I never actually finished it, so for $10 I'm down as fuck to get it on PS4 as long as it's not a choppy mess.

It could be that they replaced the old FMVs with the ones that were apparently added into the PC version a while back. The cutscenes in this PS2 version still aren't HD though, so I could be wrong. They might still be stretched after all. It's hard for me to tell.

Does anyone know if the game runs better then the original PS2 version? I remember the PS2 version having no shadows when jumping, screen tearing at points, frame rate that dips very frequently, and odd graphical issues at some points.

Are those fixed with this new version of the game? Or are they still present?

I bought this when I saw it on the store but I didn't know that the PS2 version was bad. I hope that it isn't a mess like some people are claiming...

Was looking forward to buying this, but I assumed it was going to be a full HD release, etc. like on Steam.

No way I'm buying a PS2 Classic version, though, given how shoddy that version was compared to the Xbox release.

Pains me to say it. This port sucks. The 360 emulation of the OG Xbox version seemed better. It's choppy as balls and the HUD is blurry.

Did they fix the audio desyncing with the video during cutscenes? On the ps3 version cutscenes longer than a minute or so were unwatchable due to the audio and video getting gradually more out of sync.

Damn so any impressions? Its in my cart, about to pull the trigger...

The resolution bump and widescreen are nice, but the hud looks blurry and stretched, and there's really annoying hitches in the frame rate. It's playable but the game deserves much better.

Sucks that they decided to use the PS2 version instead of a port of the PC one that is much better :(. But, at least the game is on PS4 in some form. If you don't own a decent PC or Laptop, then the PS4 version is a good one to get, as I played through the original on the PS2 back in 2007 with little issue despite the many problems the port has.

Welp, it has a platinum, but the impressions are a bit disappointing so I'll just wait for a sale. A cheaper price will make me forget about the game problems.

Weird how they didn't port the PC release, especially as they completely rebalanced the final level making it not frustratingly hard.

I've played through a fair chunk of it so far.

It's not as good as the latest build of the PC version. It's essentially the PS2 version at a higher resolution.

The framerate's choppy on occasion and the audio seems like it's out of sync at times (it's cut out entirely on two occasions). Not all of the textures translate well, which is to be expected given the age of the game.

The game is presented in a widescreen aspect ratio for the entire experience. However, the cutscenes look like they're at a lower resolution than the gameplay portions.

I'd be delighted to see Double Fine go back and "remake" Psychonauts in the same way they remade Grim Fandango, and include the tweaks they made to the final level, but doing so would take resources away from their current slate of projects.

If you been curious to play this magical game i can totally give you a copy on Steam so you dont have to wait.

Off Topic but have we been given any updates on Psychonauts 2?
Double Fine is working on the PS4 VR Rhombus of Ruin and Psychonauts 2 in tandem, with the former scheduled to be released first.

There haven't been any updates since the art jam and Devs Play series of videos.

going to laugh if this was supposed to be Sony's "and it's free right now!" game during the press conference. kind odd that they said it was coming out on the PSblog yesterday and redacted it, only for it to actually slip out anyway?

Looks like PC is still the way to go with Psychonauts

It's been a couple of years since I last played it. Maybe it's time for a replay.

What's the best version of this game, is it the PC release? I have this on xbox and steam but not got around to playing it.

PC version is best, yes, as you can run at 60fps.

The PC version is based directly on Xbox which is actually a good version as well but it's limited to 480p and 30fps, obviously.

It was a game designed with pixel shaders and other more modern visual effects in mind that just weren't possible on a PlayStation 2 so that version is markedly worse but still interesting.

I actually love seeing ports of games from Xbox/PC to the PS2. Wreckless, Malice, Giants, Psychonauts, etc. Very fascinating.
