Punch-Out!! Let's talk about it!...!

Anyone here ever play the multiplayer portion of P-O!! Wii?

I was certain that it would be a throwaway mode, but after my friends and I got the hang of it it ended up being lots of fun and very competitive.

I highly recommend giving it a shot.

Man, y'know what'd make a sick Club Nintendo gift? A Punch-Out!! arcade compilation for Wii. Punch-Out!!, Super Punch-Out!! and Arm Wrestling (shake the fuck out of the wiimote to pin dudes), maybe even throw in the Doc Louis bout for good measure.

Mike Tyson's Punchout is definitely in my top 10 game of all time. Beating Mike Tyson when I was 12 has got to be my biggest gaming accomplishment. I will forever have the numbers 007-373-5963 imprinted in my memory.

It wouldn't really fit the roster though. If Little Mac was in, I'm sure Sakurai's team could come up with something like they have with characters like Captain Falco.

How so? Any Punch Out!! character would fit in the Smash universe more than Snake.

I loved the original back on NES and I'm really glad it came out on the 3DS eShop.. It was an instant buy from me

I barely BARELY played Super Punch Out! (SNES right?)

And I have yet to play at all the new Wii one

It took me a while just to find the Wii game here in Australia... I think it ended up being a JB Hi-Fi exclusive, from memory.

I never really liked this series much to be honest. Figuring out the patterns felt like busywork to me. The big flashy characters and their charisma are a big hook though, got me playing through them anyway.

If they make another Punch Out on the WiiU I hope it's a follow up to Super Punch Out. I want to fight some weird clowns and old Monks. Also maybe put some rounds in and Doc.

The final boss should be Super Punch Out Little Mac.

The final boss should be Super Punch Out Little Mac.

I have always thought that was a great idea, too bad Nintendo wants to claim they are the same person now.

I think he means it would be weird to put an enemy character in before the main character.

Gotcha, that makes sense. It would go against the way characters have been added. It sucks though, cause I think Bald Bull is the real face of the series, and would make a far more interesting Smasher.

I love them all -- really wish we could have a new one for the 3DS or that they would have done 3D Classics versions of the NES or SNES games.

About Little Mac and Smash, I hope he is in. Having a charcter that can only use punches (no legs or head), would be refreshing, and it would be cool what creative moveset could Sakurai make with a boxing guy, sadly his final smash would be probably his hulk transformation from multiplayer.
But I hope if he gets in, that also means a stage with a boxing ring, with boxers appearing randomly and doing their stuff as stage hazards (so we can have the entire roster doing comedy moves on high definition), and Doc Louis in one ring corner making jokes.
The ropes can act a little bouncy for example, could make a fun stage. And the Punch-Out!! soundtrack, dont forget the amazing soundtrack.

Thats not entirely fair. The Wii version only has 1 new character so you cant give the Wii version points for a great roster when its just a mashup of the rosters of the 2 previous games.

There is no way Nintendo could have released Super Punch Out with the same roster as the original game. The Wii version gets away with it because its been forever since we have had a Punch Out game. If they release one for the Wii U it will have a lot of new characters, and undoubtedly some will be worse than the characters in the original game.

No no, of course the roster is nearly exactly the same as the original. What makes the Wii one so great is the amazing translation all this characters had when they were made into 3D and were more fleshed out, had little back stories, had voices in their native language, etc...
Theres a lot of hard work on that to make it as perfect as they did, thats why you can change totally the charisma of character by making some design changes only (and it can turn pretty badly, just see some videogame characters). Yeah, they had a great foundation, because the NES characters, with very few lines and some character portraits, already had a great charisma, but making the transition, that is not a an easy task in the slightlest.
Then theres characters like Bear Hugger and Aran Ryan, totally rewritten to have a character isntead of being only a moving sprite (thats how they were in Super), and they make them better!
And when they added a totally new character, Disco Kid, the hit the ball out of the park becuase the character feel so at home, that if you asked someone who didnt know the original roster, he would say he was written with the rest.

I know that Super had to have a nearly complete new roster, the problem is not that, the problem is that the roster is full of clones or character with no charisma whatsoever. It doesnt help they dont have backstory and dialog tidbits like the NES originals.

How can you possibly hate on Bear Hugger? I really like the Wii game as well but I would definitely have liked to see a bit more from Super in it. As someone who is completely clueless about actual sports, I've never liked the rounds system. I'm vaguely aware that's it's an actual thing but from a game mechanic perspective it's just an annoyance to me. Also the super bar is a much more straight forward than the star punches. Super is definetly easier than the NES original, but I'm not really sure how I'd place it against the Wii game (until the title defence mode at least).

Im not hating Bear Hugger, he had a great design in Super Punch-Out!! but it was Next Level Games who made him an AMAZING character. And adding him the squirrel companion in Title Defense? absolutely genius!
The round system is not there becuase it makes it realistic (ala Fight Night), its done for story purposes and character exposition, thats why NES and Wii games excel what I think Super fails. Also in my opinion, and adding the stars instead of the power gauge, it makes it more a puzzle/rhythm game, thats what the game excels at, than a "sports" game, that what feels more in Super.

As I said, one of the things I love in Super is the rival trainers interaction. Thats something I would love to see in a future Punch-Out!! added. But still, that and only that, the rest has to be like NES.

Mix NES and Super characters on a new one (make some of the NES trainers in this one, like Glass Joe being trainer of Gabby Jay), make a bigger roster for a much longer game (with the right mix of nes and Super that would not be a problem, of course, bring the NES ones with new storylines and movesets, just like they did with TD), and then add a TON of new ones in the mix, not only one. Something like a an opera guy that sings while fighting, a chef, I dont know, let them be creative, Im sure they can.

This post made me cry... So awesome.

The Stallone thing was in my mind since the time they said there was a surprise character before we knew it was DK. It makes so much sense that it would have been amazing seeing it. What a perfect ending.

Super is my favorite in the series. I played the NES one all the time, but I could rarely beat it. I think I beat tyson once. I always thought that little mac was too lanky. I only ever saw the arcade version, but the wire mesh graphics were awesome. So when they did something similar for super I was super happy.

I havent played the wii version.

I like the NES version and Wii version....Punch Out Wii is very impressive..the animation is incredible and those patterns are challenging!!(sometimes i want to throw my wiimote!! >.<)

loved all of them, can't wait for the next one! hopefully the Wii version sold well enough that we won't have to wait too long

Super Punch-Out!! being a bit too easy is the only criticism I'd agree with. The gameplay is head and shoulders above the original. The super-punch system rewards you for learning an opponents over all moveset rather than arbitrary secret hit points.

And since when is having much, much better control of your character a 'bad' thing? What the crap? They built the fighters in SPO quite nicely around the increase in mobility - I loved blocking in particular, and how crucial it was in later fights.

Just a shame that the game didn't get really difficult until Hoy Quarloy or whatever his name is.

Something most people don't know is that the Famicom Punch-Out originally came out as a promotion prize for a tournament.

The last boss was Super Macho Man.

The Wii game was my introduction to the series, but it was such a fantastic experience that it made me a fan

This thread really makes me want to play through it again.

loved both super and wii but never the nes one. Am looking forward to playing it on wii U.

Really enjoyed everything next level games has done with nintendo. Luigi's mansion looks killer too. So hoping they make a new new punch out!! for wii U with some new original characters

If I were rich, I would make the Punch Out movie.

I was playing Doc Louis's Punch-Out the other day. Couldn't beat him in the "Sparring" mode; not enough time with only three rounds to do the job.

The big problem is that I haven't figured out how to gain/use stars. I've just been roughing it with the basics.

This is what I was expecting. It seemed like such a no brainer and easy money in the process.

Then again, Nintendo.

If they make a sequel some characters should always be there. Going the SNES route and keeping Bald Bull, Mr. Sandman, and Super Macho Man seems essential to me. Are there any other characters that should be included in every game? I am thinking King Hippo and Soda Popinksi...

Piston Honda is remembered by nearly everyone as far as the regular characters go. I'd nearly call him a staple.

The Banzai Rush pummeling Little Mac into dust and Honda's winning flex indicating that the difficulty just got spiked will surely be remembered by a lot of fans.

What is the proper balance though? How many returning boxers should there be and how many newcomers should be present in any sequel?

So I'm going through Punchout Wii again and man, is this game going to stand the test of time or what. I know I'm late with this, but I'm just noticing that the opponent you've chosen follows your glove cursor around the screen in a natural sort of way. Not like their heads are tied to it or something.

That's one if those things I believe is a problem with this game when it comes to designing a new one. There are so many memorable characters it's hard to make that decision. It's like designing the next iteration street fighter.

I really do love how they brought so many of the characters to life in Punch-Out Wii. Even lame-os like Aran Ryan got an actual personality and he's a great fight. The intro alone "Little Mac vs Aran Ryan" bit is funny, where he just walks around the screen
Just passed this guy and that did really get me. Dude just seemed so wild. I like the personalities and whatnot, but sometimes it seemed a bit much. Like croissants flying out of people, or some of the voices.

Super Punch Out!! has 6 returning characters and 10 new characters. That may be a good way to go about it, enough returning characters to please the fans and make it a cohesive franchise, and enough new characters to add new experiences and keep the series fresh. Of course, the boxer balance should fluctuate based on the overall size of the roster.

Maybe they could introduce a few "new" characters in the form of students during the Title Defense mode. Almost like a slight parody of the guy they are under(which is a parody in itself, but you know). They would have the remixed move and pattern set of the older fighter, but have their own look inspired by them.

It sounded better in my head lol

Also, Mr. Sandman is destroying me. I don't remember this being quite so hard :-I

Wii Punch-Out! needs more attention. Fantastic game.

I just played through Super Punch-Out! again and I find it to be mediocre.

I think the animation and fluidity hold it back some at times. Mechanically it's fine, but I doesn't ruin all that smooth. Even the nes one seems more "clear" at times. The sound is a little muted too.

From what I remember.

This seems to fit here. Game Informer is currently posting a video series where one of their editors (Dan Ryckert) is trying to beat Tyson for the first time. He's currently up to two hours and still hasn't pulled it off

It's like THREE hours now lol! I'm pretty sure there's a part 3, joe juba is next up. I love me the game informer. That is hilarious stuff. Mike Tyson is a BEAST!

Ha. I wonder how long it would have taken me now if I had never played it before. I know it took me almost an entire summer when I was a little kid. Since then, though, I can beat Tyson pretty much any time, unless I'm a bit rusty.

NES Punch-Out!! is actually an amazingly good benchmark for input/display lag. Soda Popinski, Sandman and Tyson are essentially impossible on a laggy display.

Actually, *is* he playing it on a CRT or near-zero lag display? It's really almost impossible to win otherwise.

Punch-Out!! for Wii is amazing. I remember some buzz around it when it was new, but it still feels like it was quite overlooked.

The rematches are something I don't want to see leave the franchise, they have existed since the original arcade games, and only skipped the SNES version. Title Defense mode in the Wii game seemed like a natural progression of this idea, it was well received by fans, added length to the game and remixed familiar characters without losing their identities, changing it around doesn't seem necessary. I think 4 circuits with 4 boxers in each (like SPO!!) should be the series standard. Pile a Title Defense mode on top of that and you have a meaty game.

It has dated amazingly little outside of the unforgiving difficulty level. Graphics are still clear as a day and very expressive. Visual and auditory feedback workd perfectly and the controls are tight and easy to learn.

One of NES's finest.

It's a series staple. If that makes it dated then I hope all future Punch Out!! games will have the difficulty of a senile tyrannosaurus listening to a walkman while chugging a Billy Beer.

Yes whether you like it or not, games in general aren't that unforgiving anymore. I didn't say it was good or bad, just noted a fact.

I was just spitballing with the straw I bought with my linty two cents. I understood your post and I agree with you about the difficulty differences in modern and classic games.

I think Punch Out for NES was my first major video game achievement. I beat the entire game without getting knocked down. I felt so good after going through the hold thing and knocking Mike Tyson out.

And after all these decades I still remember the code: 007 373 5963

I love the Punch Out games!
Fighting for the best time in Super Punch Out against my friends used to be a huge time sink.
And let's not forget Animal Crossing on the Gamecube. Once I had my ingame NES with Punch Out, there was no stopping it. I spent lots of hours playing it. :)

Not a screenshot from my save game, just a pic for those who don't know about NES in AC (GC).

Punch Out for the Wii was like a beautiful love letter, not only to the Punch Out series but retro gaming in general. Straightforward, wacky, and fun.

I can play the NES one any time any where and never get tired of it.

Been playing since it was 'new' too, its just a forever game to me.

3DS is giving me handheld awesomeness of it as we speak.

To be honest I never really got into Super, I dunno why I just never got the same enjoyment from it. Wii one really was like a love letter to the NES one and it pushed all the right nostalgia buttons which I really appreciated, just, again, I dunno doesn't give me the same 'feel' as I have when I play the NES one.

Its still great though, like Excitebots it doesn't get as much praise (other than from here :P) as it deserves.
