I keep telling myself to grab the Wii Punchout, its only $20. I have never played it and now that I have a Wii U I need to!! I loved Punchout for the nes, I could get to Tyson but never beat him. After reading this post I will be sure to buy the Wii Punchout this week, if I wasnt snowed in right now I would run to Target, I am in the mood for this game
So I finally beat Mr. Sandman, and in the process, actually found out what I was supposed to be doing on the credits screen game. Not sure why I didn't notice that the first time around.
Now on to Title Defense mode, and the embarrassment of a possible loss to Glass Joe.
The Mr. Sandman "Get Up!!" tune is my #1 power song in the gym. Looooooooooove Punch-Out in all its forms.
I think it holds a special place in my heart because it was one of the games I didn't own when I was very young, but my neighbors and cousins did. So for a while getting to play it was this special treat. Plus I remember the TVs being gigantic and the opponents being ridiculously huge (another factor of being a little kid) and it was just this awesome, larger-than-life experience. I was stuck on Soda Popinski for a while until we finally got the game. Beating Tyson was one of my proudest moments.
Recording of a guy actually KOing Tyson (may be TAS, but all you have to do is not get hit and knock him down twice in each round): http://youtu.be/v5Vk0LFvj2Y
I really don't remember Title Defense being quite this different. Glass Joe compared to normal mode is literally a completely different character and only associated by name and look alone.
The game also still looks great on an HD set! Forgot it wasn't even running at high res.

Shit, star punches aren't auto hits anymore either. Feels very much like they had a sequel planned and just threw it in here as a bonus game. You cant use any prior knowledge from your first run.

I agree and disagree. A lot of the old strategy doesn't work but the characters generally still have the same weakness/strengths; Glass Joe still has a glass jaw, Bald Bull is still gonna bull charge, King Hippo's belly is still vulnerable, Super Macho Man is still gonna super spin punch etc. The personalities of the boxers still dictate the flow of the fight. It's similar to the way rematches were handled in the NES and Arcade games but a lot more fleshed out.
Wii Punch-Out is one of my favorite games of the entire generation. If you consider yourself a Punch-Out and fan and haven't played it, then you're not really a Punch-Out fan.
I will flip my shit if Lil' Mac is not in Smash Bros 4.
Those weird noises and the pattern he did them in is still in my head.
My title defense is still going pretty well. I still don't know why I don't remember any of this stuff. Currently "stuck" on disco kid Carlton, but that's just because I want to beat him in the first round. The next circuit is where I recall getting roadblocked, so let's see if I can make it past there.

Yep, Title Defense mode may be the most challenging thing overall in any Punch Out!! game. There are still things that I think are harder like "The Dream Fight" and some of the rematch arcade bouts but the difficulty in Title Defense mode is the most consistent.
Won't happen as long as Tyson isn't willing to do set up a new contract with Nintendo.
That said I want a Punch-Out!! Wii sequel with Mike Tyson as the boss again.
Or whatever, any famous boxer will do. Give me Vladimir Klitschko if you have to.
I remember playing Mike Tyson's Punch-Out years ago. Me and a bunch of friends tried to beat Mike for several days and failed. When I finally managed to beat him, the entire room of grown men exploded in loud cheers. Easily my best gaming memory ever!!!
As a matter of fact, I can't name a game that has given me that sense of satisfaction after completing it, it really felt like a big deal to have finally beat that game.

Punch Out!! doesn't need to depend on crossover characters or real life boxers but I see the appeal. Punch Out!! was a success in the arcades without Tyson and the constant clamoring for his return is tiring. Tyson doesn't define the series. If they do return to the NES installments "Dream Fight" idea I think Muhammad Ali or some other classic boxing great would be more fitting at this point.

Maybe not, but he totally epitomizes it, especially for us children of the 80s. It's no coincidence they moved Sandman back into the champion spot and make him more similar to Iron Mike (the hair, the gap tooth after a couple shots to the face).
You're spot on about the music BTW, it's pretty amazing how 90% of it is a remix of the same tune but it still feels fresh every time you hear a new version.
I would have like Mr. Dream be the final boss in Wii Punchout. Mr. Sandman was never boss material IMO. We was 3rd tier in NES Punchout and not even World Title material in Super Punchout
Wii Punchout would have even been more epic if the Title Defense mode contained the Super Punchout characters. Replace Glass Joe for Gabby Jay for your first defense. Glass Joe doesn't deserve a title shot.
If they make a sequel some characters should always be there. Going the SNES route and keeping Bald Bull, Mr. Sandman, and Super Macho Man seems essential to me. Are there any other characters that should be included in every game? I am thinking King Hippo and Soda Popinksi...

While I like Super Punch out better, I do have a fond memory of OG Punch Out for the NES.
We rented the game a Christmas Eve and we played all night. I remember my father and grand father cheering us while we were playing like it was a real boxing match.
One of my favorite series. I still regret getting rid of my Wii before getting a chance to play Punch-Out!! Wii.
Its crazy how you can not play the game for ages, start the game, and have all of those muscle memories kick in on the boxers patterns. Great characters, great gameplay. A perfect combination.
On the next Punch-Out, I want a new main character, and the main boss to be Lil' Mac.
Mr. Sandman is the WVBA Champion in the very first Punch Out!! game, the #1 contender for the World title in the NES game, and the Major Circuit Champion in the SNES game. Not a bad resume.
From the original Punchout, I feel the following should be in every game
Super Macho Man
Mr. Sandman
Bald Bull
King Hippo
Soda Popinski
Piston Honda
and maybe Mr. Dream, should be the standard final boss given his epic name
I could live with that. Except for Mr. Dream returning. Too bad that his sleep apnea went undiagnosed and he died in a car crash on his way to the unemployment office, so there is no real point in discussing it anyway.
I'm having a harder time finding Wii Punch-Out!! than I expected. I've checked three Gamestops (which resulted in two used copies with coverless manuals--unacceptable), and two Targets (empty-handed). What's the deal?
Little Mac vs. Makunouchi Ippo. Secret boss. Liver Shot, Gazelle Punch and the Dempsey Roll as his special moves you have to block/counter. Make it happen, Nintendo.
I have to agree, that Punch Out!! Wii is the best version in the series. I really enjoyed it. Title Defense Mode absolutely MADE that game what it is, for a hardcore player that is. When King Hippo
duct tapes a manhole cover to his belly in order to protect himself
, you KNOW you're in for a challenging and fun time! But I always have had fantastic memories of every single one of the games.
However, the one I hold closest to my heart is the arcade original. I'll never forget playing it the first several times in a corner arcade that was attached to a local mini-mart location. That game takes SO MUCH memorization and quick reflexes, well beyond any of the other games for the consoles (with the arcade Super Punch-Out!! being a close 2nd).
So, I HAD to add an arcade edition to my collection. I found one really cheap cross-state, went and picked it up, and took about 4 mos to fully restore it. She's an absolute gem in my gameroom that gets tons of play:
One of my proud moments about this machine is that it is the one that to which the World Record was achieved on back in 2010, by my now friend Sean Sandnes of BC. It took him over 13 hours to achieve a WR score of 18,999,960. What's cooler is that he kept the score from rolling over to 0, by my request, so that he could put his initials in as a top score that would likely never be achieved on my machine, lol. If you look carefully at the marquee of the machine in the gameroom photo (and the upper-left of the sideart), you can see some black/silver sharpie writing where Sean wrote the date, score and signed his name when he got the WR.
I also have every console edition of the game 100% boxed and complete, though no pics. But I absolutely adore this series.
PS. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE Dragon Chan in the arcade ver of Super Punch-Out!! :-|
Super Punch Out!! is a direct arcade sequel to the first Punch Out!! arcade. SPO!! SNES is mostly based on the style of these games. The power meter functions in the same way (minus the rapid punch) and there are no rounds (another thing that the SNES version adopted). The game feel is completely different though and I consider both of the arcade games much more difficult. Fun fact: Super Punch Out!! arcade marks the first appearances of Super Macho Man, Dragon Chan, and Bear Hugger, all of them also appear in the SNES title.
Mario is the most competent referee in the series. Under his watch there was no kicking, headbutting, toxin spitting, boxing glove flails, wooden staffs, or juggling balls being thrown. However, he was fooled by Great Tiger's magic punches.
I got all caught up in Rising(good lord...) and Rhythm Heaven Wii, so my title defense run got put on hold, but I just realized something(probably late as usual, but eh)
Nintendo always said that Mac from punchout and super punchout were the same dude right? I mean, everyone else in the world thought differently, but officially he was the same guy. Well, why do they basically act like super punchout didn't exist in the commercial for the Wii version? Maybe the Wii version is like Prime and takes place between the two of them.

Probably just went with the them of the weak becoming strong. Not that pink means you are weak, but you know, perceptions and all. The color stood out well on the nes too, and kinda became his trademark.
I don't believe I've heard of a gba like game before. I've said it before, but Sakura Samurai always felt like a spiritual successor to punchout. The theme is a far cry, but mechanically the have more than a resemblance in common.
Super Punch Out!! now officially stars Retcon Mac!
Nintendo only started referring to the SPO!! protagonist as Little Mac when the special Gamecube version of Fight Night Round 2 was released with SPO!! unlockables. He is never named in the game or in the instruction manual.
