A quick timer event (QTE) is a method of context-sensitive gameplay in which the player performs actions on the controller shortly after the appearance of an on-screen prompt. While this game design element did previously exist in titles like Dragons Lair, Yu Suzuki popularized its use in his game Shenmue and coined the term. The term (which appears in promotional videos for the game, the manual, and the game proper) succinctly describes an event where the player has to quickly respond to a prompt before a short timer expires.
QuickTime is a multimedia framework developed by Apple Inc. that is capable of handling digital videos. This software was widely used when Shenmue released, causing the term to be conflated by forum goers and video game podcasts for the next 15 years when discussing games like Resident Evil 4 and God of War.
