QTE = Quick Timer Event NOT QuickTime Event

It doesn't really matter what the origin is any more as Quick Time Event has become the standard. That's just how language works.

Thank you.

I'm going to keep using Quick Time Event because I am a free man and I refuse to believe I have been saying it wrong for all these years.

Thanks OP now I know to start typing it properly so I don't look so wrong all the time!

Let me practice first

Quick Timer Event

Okay I think I did that right, but I should give it a few more shots first

Yeah like that right?

Is QTrE okay too?

To anyone sticking with Quick Time Event after learning about the orignial source:

Say, you played Street Fighter back in the day and always pronounced Ryu's name "Rah-you", then afterwards you learn about the correct pronunciation. Would you still insist on pronouncing it incorrectly because you did it for so long now and everyone you know did it as well? Or would you try to correct yourself and use the correct pronunciation?

As for myself, I'll continue to refer to them as Q-T-E :)

I understand the concept of evolving language and of course I don't mind the current use of the term. I just think it's strange that some people try to dismiss the true origin of the term (and that it doesn't even get mentioned on wikipedia). Know your roots.

The term 'Quick Time Event' is older than Shenmue.

If they called it 'Quick Timer Event' in the Shenmue, it should be an Engrish typo, because everywhere else always has been named 'Quick Time Event', both before and after Shenmue.

Are you sure?
Looking through old magazines/reviews, I can't seem to find any mention of the term QTE. I'm pretty sure the term was first used for Shenmue previews/reviews.

Interestingly, in these reviews the term was explained to the reader as it was still new, and the full spelling of the acronym was always given as Quick Timer Event (ign Shenmue review, gamespot review)

Maybe the mechanics of a QTE existed before Shenmue, but was it explicitly called QTE?

I think the manual, the screenshot, the Kotaku article and the reviews prove that quick time event was wrong all the time.

Quick Timer Event. Voted.

Whoever came up with it first should get to name it. People are free to call it what they want, but they're just straight up wrong. It's okay being wrong, but they shouldn't get so defensive when people call them wrong. It's like how most Americans don't believe in man made global warming (http://dailycaller.com/2014/06/26/poll-53-of-americans-dont-believe-in-man-made-global-warming/ which probably could be refuted, but this is just an example so no need to argue about whether it's true or not because I could've very easily picked another example). Majority can set the standard, but being in the majority never guarantees you're correct.

On a slightly related tangent, Gif is pronounced with a soft G.

Seeing as everybody now calls it Quick Time with no 'r', that ain't happening.

Again, in my experience pretty much everybody says gif with a hard g (I've worked with one person who pronounced it 'jif') so if that's what sticks, so be it.

This would explain why QuickTime player did not do what it said on the tin and auto-play QTE for me.

I should have been downloading QuickTimer Player instead. I guess quick timer makes more sense when there is a timer on the screen rather than button flashing.

QTE is an acronym for "Poor Game Design"

wrong

Why not just call it "G.A.R.B.A.G.E." (you can choose what this acronym stands for)? You are probably right in regards to QTE being the acronym for Quick Timer Event, though Quick Time Event is well-understood (and any sane person just translates it to "shitty and lazy gamedesign" anyway) by now, so I don't see any point in forcing a change in wording.

That's just plain wrong. Shenmue was the first occurence of the term 'Quick Timer Event'. The plain truth.

I don't think Quick Time Event is going to be called anything else, but come on guys, at least acknowledge its origin.

Adders and aprons used to be nadders and naprons until people started getting them confused with the indefinite article. Even if the 'correct' term was Timer, it seems common use has changed it anyway.
