Now that people are getting hands on the game, please post your story thoughts and questions here. Obviously will contain UNMARKED SPOILERS!

What are considered spoilers that should be posted here and/or be marked in other threads?

  • Ending of the game
  • Fate of certain characters
  • Choice options
  • Plot and characters affected by said choices
  • Important story details including those found in collectibles
 
Going to have all the cutscenes uploaded by the end of the day into one video if you would like to post a link in the OP? Also included all the TV episodes in there for anybody that would like to watch those on their own!

No problem just post the link here, would prefer you specify which choice you make at each junction point since those make quite a difference.

The footage I have recorded shows which choices I make at each segment, but I could label them for you if you want.

1) PR
2) Personal
3) Trust Sofia Amaral
4) Control

Have you heard anything or personally scene the opposing choices? How much do they alter the episodes? I was going to do another playthrough tonight and then record the opposite choices/episodes.

Later episodes have more variations, I'm not sure how many but I've seen quite a huge difference starting at Episode 3. And the ending to Episode 4 will change completely depending on several choices.

Well I for one appreciate it, especially since I have noticed a growing number of people in the review thread wanting to talk about the story. A good amount of people are starting to get the game early!
 
From a lot of the previews I've seen, most people chose PR as the first junction. I was thinking about going this route when I play my first playthrough, but now I'm thinking I'll do hardline. Nick seems like an awesome character, and it will be cool having the original Jack Joyce with you.

Seriously? The game isn't even out yet and you're dumping all of the TV episodes up onto YT and posting it here?

1) The narrative is a big part of the game.
2) How is that any different from ripping TV episodes from a DVD set and uploading?

Remedy setup the game so that gameplay could be easily streamed, but just dumping the video isn't gameplay. That's straight up pirating of the episodes.

Everyone else I knew playing it went PR on their first run.

Just felt more in-character for me. Serene sacrificed everything for his plan and the end of time was inevitable for him anyway. So who cares about PR.

That was exactly the reason I chose hardline. You're not playing Joyce when the junctions come up. You're playing Serene. Might as well be true to the character.
 
Paul Serene fucks things up by going back in time to 1999, by using his knowledge of the future he invests to become super rich and manipulates the market.

Despite repeated warnings and proof that attempting to change history is disastrous Jack resolves in the ending to go back and save Beth who was killed earlier.

Yeah man wtf. I hope they release something in order to explain him and the ending. They said they have no DLC planned and who knows how it'll sell. Just give me a comic or something.

It's possible, no one knows where he came from and how he end up working for Paul, but if it is indeed him, then we have someone who can go in and outside of Shifter form at will (could be how he killed the soldiers when he was taken into custody), without exposing his chronon abilities... Which is a tier above what Paul and Jack can do. Holy shit.

The note on Serenes desk when you investigate the building as Jack more or less states that Hatch is a Shifter.

It mentions learning to exist in a specific time and place, and controlling the shifting ability. Which also explains why Hatch wants to see Serene fall. He wants to make it a world for Shifters.

Hmm cool. Explains the ending also abit more then. He probably wants to recruit Joyce for that.
 
Someone want to explain the ending to me? The story really picked up by Act 4 and I was really digging it until that abrupt ending. How exactly did they fix everything? If Paul saw Time End in 2021 then technically everything we are apart of is the past and thus cannot be changed. What exactly changed after the "fix?" Did it just prevent time from ending or did some events reverse? What happened to Jack at the end? Why and who exactly was interrogating him? And, of course what is the deal with Hatch? The notes make it obvious he is a Shifter and apparently wants to make a world for Shifters what exactly does that mean?

They did not change any of the past events, all what they do to "fix" time happens along the time, basically comes down to "Jack takes the CFR (countermeasure) from Paul, goes to the 2nd time machine and fix the fracture".
 
Just finished. So the ending pretty much implies they're all still fucked. The End of Time was never exactly specified to happen in 2016. All we know is that it happens in 2021 which means it does still happen, just that it was never scheduled for 2016.

That's the thing: it's open for interpretation. Serene believed it took five years for the Fracture to reach the End of Time. Instead it only took a bit over a day. So either Jack really changed things, as he wants to believe, or yeah, the End of Time is still coming and this was just an appetizer.

What's up with that Hatch guy, though. He can die like three times in some choices, and he's always there to tell Jack "we're different now, for realzies."

EDIT: Wow, beat the game twice in the last two weeks and never picked up Hatch was a Shifter. Makes sense.

Anyone else disappointed we never actually got to fight a Shifter, btw? Whole Monarch HQ section seemed to be leading to it, and then nothing.
 
The Hatch and Shifter stuff was obvious setup for the sequel. I was highly disappointed we didn't fight them but it's sorta like the higher Dark beings in Alan Wake that Alan teased.
 
I was thinking the same about the Shifter in Monarch building, but now it looks like it was just Hatch helping you. That's how he reached the CFR room before jack and "got killed". Also keep in mind Quantum Break seems to be in the same universe as Alan Wake if those Alan Wake as a writer mentions are not merely easter eggs. I'd be disappointed if they are.

No I don't think Hatch was helping you as his goal is the successful activation of the End of Time.

I think it was incredibly smart of them to neither have us visit End of Time or fight a Shifter.

Visiting End of Time would take out the mystery of it, hearing the diaries describing it and the fear in Serenes voice when discussing it is far more powerful then a closed off space in a big Fracture.

And fighting a Shifter has the potential to be a frustrating and boring mouse and cat boss fight. It makes sense that they avoid that, and push for them instead to be incredibly dangerous. Making sure you don't fight one, lets them give you the impression that you wouldn't be able to even survive it anyways.

And I always assumed that the Shifter causing chaos was Dr. Kim.

So he is confident that Lifeboat won't do anything? And if he wasn't stopped by Emily/Liam (depending on choices) he probably gonna take the CFR himself I guess?

Well the goal of the Lifeboat was to keep Shifters out and fix the End of Time. Hatch wanted the Lifeboat destroyed so he was going to take the CFR.

This is interesting. I did some digging around and the story behind this is that the character Clarice Owaga, who is interrogating Joyce is one of the higher ups in Monach. Here's where it gets better: She was the character in the first trailer (who was later replaced by Beth). Apparently in a video for motion capture website, the actress stated that Quatum Break was her first mo cap project and order to prepare for her role, she had gone through military training (it was implied that she would have more action sequences, hence the reveal trailer). but since development changed over time, again, her role was replaced by Beth, and Ogawa, played by Jeannie Bolet took a backseat.

I think this is why you see her in game/voice over for a while, and not anywhere in the TV series.

Yeah, I caught all of that but we still have no idea who she is or why Jack is being interrogated. Like, why did he just voluntarily decide to tell some Monarch women what happened?

See, the entire time I was playing the game I viewed Jack as the villain, a stubborn idiot motivated by petty goals who was simply unwilling to listen to reason or see the bigger picture. Everything we've seen in the game suggests that time cannot be altered, you cannot change the past and yet Jack does everything he can to attempt it including destroying the one plan that might actually save the human race. The thing about the Lifeboat is that theoretically it isn't a bad plan and is the ideal solution to fix the End of Time.

The Lifeboat simply allowed for a fixed place where Time would continue and the scientists could work for a number of decades on fixing the flow of Time. Everyone on the outside of Time would theoretically be safe, frozen in time barring some freak train bursting through to hit them as the Shifters do not bother frozen individuals. However, Jack's plan to use the CFR effectively destroys any attempt to use the Lifeboat on a risky plan that has no guarantee of success to stop Time from ever breaking despite everything suggesting that it has already happened and thus cannot be changed. If you were a betting man the smartest plan is the Lifeboat as it ensures survival and a large amount of time to fix the problem.

I have to say the one thing I like about this universe so far is the idea that you cannot change the past and that essentially everything is predetermined. The majority of time travel stories revolve around being able to change events and thus create alternate realities. I appreciate the idea that events simply cannot be altered and that we are all indeed puppets on a string, it makes time travel all the more scary and mysterious. I especially enjoyed how this fact played with the minds of so many of the characters like William and Beth. William and Beth pretty much accepted they were puppets but were compelled to follow the script "fate" had set for them despite knowing full well their efforts were futile. Again, it's fascinating and scary.
 
I am curious about Martin and Kims relationship. Were they friends after they became shifters or before? What was Kim working on that caused him to be exposed to that many chronons? Just experimenting with the CFR? Also why does Monarch believe that Shifters can only exist in stopped time? Martin seems to prove this is untrue

Other things of note:

- in Martin's letter to Serene, he names Paul, Jack, Kim, and 'others, some of whom you know' as shifters
- Im guessing this means Jack will need Chronon treatments eventually as well
- Claire (the girl at the end) gets an email from Paul re: Hatch. She goes to some length to defend him, seemingly indicating shes been allied with him all along

Jack's complete certainty that his plan was the only plan, just seemed arrogant - he didn't even consider other options. No matter how many times Paul and others demonstrated that past events could not be changed, Jack was adamant that he could fix things. By the end I was honestly just rooting for Paul; like another said, Jack just seemed like a villain

I think the idea was that Jack was right to try and fix the problem before the Life Boat was necessary. As Will points out, their specialists were a bunch of idiots and there was no guarantee that the people on the Life Boat would have come out with a solution.

The problem is that Jack doesn't understand how deep the rabbit hole goes and is sort of an idiot. The End of Time has to happen before 2021. The game makes it clear that this was what was supposed to happen all along as Jack gets a glimpse of his future self seeing the End of Time.

Paul was 100% correct.

It explains, (and at the same time it doesn't) How Hatch doesn't feel threatened by anything over the course of the game. My guess is he's an alien.

No, he's a Shifter. He became one after encountering natura; timey wimey stuff in a cave some time ago. We aren't really given an idea as to how old he is and the fact that he became a Shifter through a cave seemed to suggest to me that he could be thousands of years old. But, that's just speculation.

This isn't any different from someone posting the cutscenes of a game (live-action or not). Plus this will be helpful for people who want to see different outcomes or replay a video.

Yeah i didnt get that one. Until i remembered i choose PR offcourse and the truck didnt have any reason to crash through the roadblock. That is awesome.
