Question for PS5 Digital Edition and Series S owners

After going for an all-digital console, which "R" are you filled with?

  • Relief. I love my all digital console and I'm never going back.

  • Regret. I wish I chosed the version with a drive.

I'm voting R for: resigned. I'm not gonna buy much for it, since it's never going anywhere else, but I'm fine with what I've got.

Can I vote for "I regret that the digital only version was sold out, so I had to buy the weird pregnant looking version with a disk drive, that I've literally never put a disk into"

I dont buy disc games, due to kids.
I am having fun with digital ps5. Easy download, and delete. No need for disc pop.

I voted for relief. I ain't actually relieved. I'm more don't give a shit/whichever's cheapest. That PS5 disc version looks ugly as shit don't it. The digital version's a fuckin eyesore too, but just slightly less. To be honest I fuckin hate the PS5 design. It's a fat fuckin mess. It looks like a cheap ass Walmart fan heater. The Xbox S ain't exactly pretty, but it's small and that makes up for a lot. I got my PS5 lying on it's side because the fuckin thing blocks my TV screen when it's vertical. I hope when Sony do a revised model they actually copy MS, and just make a small, plain boring ass box. Anything would be better than the coke head's nightmare that's currently hulking out in front of my TV

Resigned is a great way to put it.

I gave up on physical media for games with the PS4 generation with very few exceptions (I have collectors editions for MGS5, Bloodborne, Shadow of Colossus, Bloodstained and The Last Guardian). The only downside to not owning physical media is that you can't transfer ownership (sell) but I usually don't buy games that I'd end up selling anyway. The data on the discs is usually outdated by the time the game is released, more and more games are online centric and can be shut down rendering your disc useless, and not having to deal with cluttered shelf space, and ease of access help outweigh the risks. Waiting for discounts, free giveaways and subscription services also help negate the ability to be able to resell your games.

I do still keep physical for Switch games which have a lot of the problems I mentioned above, but that's more about having the least amount of confidence in Nintendo's account system and allowing us to keep our digital histories. Time will tell though. In that regard: PC >>> Microsoft > Sony >>> Nintendo.

Regret but only slight. I got a ps5 digital as it was all my wife (it was a gift) could find at the time.

For my series s though, no regrets as I expected it to be 100% the way it is.

There isn't a single Collector's Edition I haven't regreted buying. They all ended up collecting dust, scuffed/scratched, certain parts of them somehow either broke or deteriorated (specially boxes).

I wish I just bought the regular edition instead (or better, the digital copy, as I still play those games; I love them). Luckily I didn't buy many, but I'm done with them and plan to sell the few I have someday.

Why can't you let people be happy with what they bought? What the hell is wrong with you that you have to keep making everything so divisive?
It is not my intention to judge people's purchases. I'm just curious about user satisfaction because I'm considering going all digital and I want to gather references from people who're already there.

As I matured they also made me kind of embarassed to display, as they look like cheap kiddie/nerdy stuff.

I mostly agree with this. The Demon Souls and Bloodborne collectors editions are nice as they are the same size as a normal case, just wider. The Bloodstained is just from the Kickstarter so it has a slip case on it.

I have disc PS5 and an XSX and I'm still all digital on them. I also have an XSS in my office. The only game disc I've bought since 2016 has been Cyberpunk 2077 for $10 because I wanted to play it unpatched on my base PS4 to have a laugh at the bugs.

I buy mostly physical on Switch, though I have been making some digital purchases lately.

Well give it a shot. Nobody's holding a gun to your head to go one way or another. If anything you will figure it out. Disc's break and gamecards wear out. The inverse is you might not to get to re-download your items but that hasn't been a issue with consoles yet. Yet.....lol

Still looking for that Disc to Digital trade in thing I read about many years ago.

The only Disc that has been in my Series X was my old Fellowship of the Rings DVD.
The only Disc that has been in my PS5 was the Two Towers DVD.
Waiting for the Series X Pro to play Return of the King.
Waiting for the PS5 Pro to play The Hobbit where I skip to all the Fun scenes.

And I found out something interesting while playing these movies. Both the new machines are cool when you eject the disc. You don't have to play hot potato to get the Disc back in it's case unlike the PS4 Pro where it was melting the disc while it played.

I bought a PS5 disk version because they made like 10x more of them at that point at least, and I've never used the disk drive and could have easily gone all digital. My series S I also don't miss it at all.

I have alot of 360 games and many are BC compatible which is one of the reasons I went with the X plus more storage

I bought my Series X for the power, not the disk drive. There is no reason a company can't disable your disk from installing if they're willing to take the PR hit, and apparently the disk of Babylon's Fall is already worthless.

Give up the ghost physical bros, the war is over. Unless we're talking about retro collecting, which is its own over-inflated can of worms, your used disks have been nothing more than physical license codes since the PS5-Series consoles launched. They can be invalidated at any time.

Of the 100+ games I got for PS4 not a single one was physical so it was an easy choice to go for the cheaper and better looking PS5 when the pre-orders came up. In truth I started moving to digital only when I got my PS3 Super Slim with a big enough hdd.

PS4 was mainly digital, I bought like 4 physical games in 7 years . So I went digital with PS5. No issues until now. Had to update the HD for all the ps plus

I was digital because of gameshare but my gameshare buddy got a series S over a ps5 so I went with discs this year, im happy to be fair. I never had a collection and it kinda feels nice to have something tangible

Only reason I got a PS5 with a blu-ray drive is because it's all I could get my hands on last year (plus Demon's Souls and an extra controller which was part of the bundle the store had).

I've been digital since the optical drive on my ps4 crapped out the day MGS5 released. Don't miss bookshelves full of game cases or swapping discs at all.

I guess I would say regret as I turned around about a year later and bought series X solely for the extra SSD space. And I wanted to retire my ps4 as my blu ray player so it made sense to me.

Now my series S is a dedicated emulation / rock band 4 machine I can take to places. Truthfully it just sits On a shelf unplayed for months. Still a great machine.

I am someone who loves Digital and is often in the camp defending it against unfair criticism, near the end of the PS4 generation all my purchases were digital and this influenced my purchasing decisions as I bought a PS5 Digital and a Series S on launch.

I was happy with my decision and didn't mind spending more on digital products and would actually more times than not, save money on launch using cheap credit deals and cd key websites.

However my view has shifted within the last 12 months once I picked up a Series X and began collecting games, it soon became a great hobby to collect physical media, the thrill of finding great deals on the road, the joy of adding rare games to your shelves and the sheer amount of gems that I now had the chance to play. I now collect PS3/PS4/PS5, Wii, GameCube, Xbox/360/XB1/XSX and Switch titles along with Blu-ray movies and it's been some of the most fun I've had in ages.

I gave my digital edition PS5 away to my sister this month and actually bought a physical disk based version for the sole purpose of collecting.

So I've done a 180° on the digital media wave, but I still firmly enjoy both forms of collecting media, for example most of my pre-ordered titles for 2023 are digital purchases, but all the games going forward I'll preorder will be physical media.

I'm a reasonably fit athletic man for my age (run 15-20 miles a week and some light weights etc) but Gamepass and Psn extra have made me too lazy to get up and change a disc. Also I have a SS to go with the SX so now end up waiting for a digital sale so I can play on both rather than buy a physical version.
I've been meaning to get back into the Last of Us 2 for the last few weeks but I'm too idle to take out my GT7 disc.
So yes I'd seriously consider digital on both platforms next time.

Haven't purchased a disc game in close to 5 years. I'm an expat so clutter reduction is important as I move apartment every couple of years and the possibility of moving country again is always there so just being able to move physical hardware will make my life much easier if that time comes.

I'm fine with pricing for titles I want day one (which is rare these days, especially since I only tend to use to PS5 for first party games), if not I'm happy to be opportunistic and wait for sales. The sales are actually pretty good these days as well so can't complain - much better than they were a decade ago.

So in summary - saved money on the hardware, got what I wanted and I'm happy to be patient when necessary.

Never buying discs again.

I believe digital library is easy to carry forward since backwards compatibility is good these days.

It can get expensive though if you are used to selling physical games after playing them. I personally play fewer games day 1 due to that, which I feel improves overall experience since you are not over hyped.

I'm getting rid of my physical collection so there is no point for me to have console with disc drive. Shame that Microsoft did not released Series X without Bluray drive so I can save some more money. Also have Series S.

Restraint
It was the only option that would fit in my suitcase traveling home from Japan.
It's a nuisance not being able to afford or feeling the urge to pay a premium for PS5 games others can get for a steal on the used market.
But I feel more mature having less game cases in my home and this forced restraint helps me with my FOMO and getting through my backlog and I started play more games on PC and got more interested in discovering great games on Retro, Steam and Itch.io instead of just focusing on games on PS – which holds high quality but there are so much more classics I want to play in my lifetime.

I also have a lot of PS4 games unfinished.

Xbox - absolutely fine. Buying games from foreign market places/key resellers for dirt cheap/Game Pass.

PS - been digital since the PS4 but only buy their first party on deep discount. Lack of buying choice means higher prices.

Went all digital in the 360 era. Won't ever go back. The convenience is unbeatable and I don't see the point of having an ever-changing digital product delivered on static media.

I went full digital back on the PS4. There was no regret involved in getting the digital edition PS5, I specifically sought it out.

The reality is that it'll be the standard going forward. The upcoming revision will be the digital edition with the option to purchase an external disc drive.

Disc-based games will eventually be relegated to a niche option, much like music CDs and DVDs.

I only buy digital for the deep discounts but i have the PS5 with disc drive so i can borrow games from friends

I bought a PS5 with the disc drive and a Series S

Can honestly say the only physical game I have bought this gen was Demons Souls Remake at launch

Owned a series s, upgraded to a series X but the main driving force behind that was getting the One X modes in backwards compatible games. The extra power and storage was nice too.

I've barely used the disc drive. I rented RDR2 on disc and I played a 360 game on disc but that's it. Rental is amazing to save money but decided I don't want to be tied to the time constraints of "if I don't play the game I'm renting and play something else I'm losing money." Thing.

While having a disc drive sort of gives peace of mind knowing you can, practically I almost never use it.

We've been digital on Steam for well over a decade, and 90% of disc games are FUBAR without the day 1 patches now.

So, I am okay with it. If they revoke everything, I will be upset for a mere hour or so, then move on with my life and invest more in other RL hobbies.

fully digital since start of last gen.

ps5de was perfect product for me.
honestly don't even know if the drive in my sx is working or not. haven't tried it once in 2 years.

I hate clutter, i don't like having disk cases everywhere and i play and buy a TON of games.

Digital is the future, preservation is a worry for me but the convenience and tidiness of a an all digital future is more appealing to me than that.

With internet being so fast now, it's so easy to manage my huge library of games.

I can understand that point about clutter. At least one person not talking about "oh I have to swap dics"
I did sold Callisto Protocol for example after finishing it which is something I never do...
I am still going physical as I dont want to give my freedoms and better pricing away and I liek my game shelf but fair enough

I have the disc edition (mainly because I was going to get rid of my PS4 and did) but I have mostly been buying games digitally anyway.

Disk swapping is a lazy excuse, i have so much shit in my house that having more seems annoying lol

It's also harder to clean the more shit you have :P
