Has the issue with watching Blu-Ray movies on HDTV's that don't support 1080p been addressed?

My TV supports everything but 1080p. My plan is to watch most everything is 720p or 1080i, depending on which I think looks better at the time.

I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to this stuff. But where can I buy the cord that is not HDMI but displays 1080 HD? What is it called? Is it cheap? Like I said, I'm clueless about this stuff.


EDIT: I already bought the 10$ monoprice HDMI thing only to realize my 72" TV does not support it.

You should find out whether your TV supports HDMI (1 plug) or Component (5 colors, red, green, blue, white, red). Look at the back at the inputs. If you have HDMI, get that from Monoprice. If you don't, get Component. If you have DVI, you can get a DVI -> HDMI convertor, but that will cost you.

Meh, you can find HDMI<->DVI cables, about as cheap as HDMI ones.

I'll just add : make sure that your DVI in supports HDCP. If not, go for component

watch blu-ray movies at 1080i, not 720p, if your set supports 1080 native res. blu-ray movies are encoded mostly at 1080p/24, so if your set supports 1080 native res and has a 1080i/60 input, it can deinterlace the original 1080p signal back exactly as it would if the input was 1080p.

if its a 720p native set though, just have the ps3 down res it

There is only one update. Where the 360 Dashboard updates are usually incrementally added to the HDD, Sony's updates completely replace the firmware eachtime.

An update has never taken me longer than 10 minutes, but YMMV.

Mine hasn't been slow in a long time. Last 3 updates were easily less than 10 minutes from starting the download to firmware installed and restarted. And I have the low-end, bog-standard DSL line in my new apartment.

People have different experiences though.

Couple questions I came across last night while checking out everything in the system's setup menus...

What's the difference between Bitrate and Linear PMC or whatever? Does one sound better than the other? I have sound running through an optical cable, and video through HDMI.

How do I change the default resolution on the PS3? When I first plugged it in, it asked what res I wanted, and I chose 1080i. I'd like to switch to 720p for default for games, and then switch it to 1080i whenever I watch a BD-ROM.
