Quitting a crappy retail job.

It's simple. If you ever want them as a reference give a two weeks notice. If you respect them in any way give a two weeks notice. If they are assholes you hate, quit now and set something on fire on the way out.

Would the company give two weeks notice if they fired you?

I can see offering to help in a limited circumstance, like working on days off doing a two week period, but screwing yourself to give two weeks notice, for a retail job, is stupid.

I'd give two weeks, and say some days you won't be able to make it- this is what I can work.
That would suck for two weeks, but it's the fairest balance.

If they say so, then say sorry, it's not personal, but this is a much better opportunity.

most of my jobs when i worked retail or food i quit without notice or got fired. Every time i used it as reference and still got hired. People dont really check that shit.

Its the law where i live that the company has the same notice time when firing you as you do when quitting. 2 months after a year and 3 months after 4 years.

Ahh sweet socialism.

Thats pretty nice. I once got fired after 3 months because after that they would have to start giving me benefits. Got pulled into the office one Friday at 4:45 pm, told them they are letting me go, but said "You can go ahead and take the rest of the day off".

I say just quit.

I quit Wal-Mart over an issue with other employees bullying me and management looking the other way. I tried everything I could to resolve the situation, but management was all "Look at this stack of applications. You won't be missed and we can replace you in a heartbeat with a grateful person."

The day I quit was after my shift ended. I walked across the way to a movie theater that was set to open, filled out an application, talked to the hiring manager and was offered a job.

Went back to Wal-Mart and quit. The HR manager freaked out (We were severely understaffed) and my response was "You got that stack of applications."

I then called corporate and informed them of the "Situation" there. On the day of the Dreamcast launch, I was told to come in to have a word with the store manager. I remember that day for two reasons: 1 was getting my Dreamcast. 2 was me walking out of the store with the now unemployed store manager, my former manager, and the employees who bullied me.

I later left the movie theater job due to the pay and hours not matching what I was promised, along with me not receiving my pay for the last four weeks ("We can't find your paycheck, we'll call you when it shows up.") Filed a grievance through the state with the theater, won a nice settlement, and took the rest of 1999 and all of 2000 off.

When I went back to work in 2001, both Wal-Mart and the movie theater situations had zero effect on my employability.

This is gonna be super anti-climactic, but...

They called me not too long ago and asked if I'd come into work today (it was my day off). I told the store manager that I was actually going to come in and tell them that I accepted another job offer and they wanted me to start monday and I was quitting. She said that I would no longer be able to work for the store again considering it was such short notice and I'd need it in writing. She didn't sound angry at all, but then again she was starting to not like me over the course of the last few weeks.

Do I just need to make a short resignation letter and sign it? Something like "I, (my name), resign from my position as an Electronics Sales Associate at Kmart, effective immediately." Then sign and date or whatever?

goddamnit pigspeakers you didn't even pee on anything

well maybe you did, i don't know what kind of morning you had.

I didn't even have to get out of bed to quit. I think that's probably good enough for me. I had some easy mac in my locker that I want to go get. And maybe I'll go buy some clothes at Sears with my discount.

If you are not going to be able to work there anymore, then I wouldn't even bother doing that. Enjoy your little break between now and monday.

The thing I hate about quitting most is the way they pretend to give a damn and try to resolve whatever issue you have with the job.

I personally don't want them to try and pulling anything. I don't trust the ethics of Kmart, especially not this store. Besides, I need to go and get my food out of my locker anyways and see if I can get that one new girl's number.

When I quit a job, they had me sign a thing that said "I ______ hereby terminate my employment blah blah blah" with a date on it. On zero notice. But I got rehired years later , so ymmv.

There is nothing they can legally do.

You're no longer a employee of KMart, they can't do shit to you. Well maybe be a dick and not let you collect your personal belongings.

Quit my job...twice! Same store, different locations.

Quit the first time since I was moving. I told my manager a week in advanced as a courtesy. I re-applied "near" (like 30-45 minutes of walking) the place I lived in since I couldn't get hired by anyone (just a string of bad interviews, I suppose).

Quit that after they wouldn't follow my availability, getting in the way of my classes. I had planned on working and telling them I quit, but my roommate just told me to call them and spend the rest of the day doing whatever. I did that, and the manager said it was fine, but was deducting an amount on the paycheck I'm getting to cover for the uniform, which didn't happen at my previous store. I didn't bother arguing, and dropped off my uniform and to pick up my check later in that week.

They actually lost my check, and had to come back a week later. That sucked balls.

Its retail. They're used to it I'm sure.

Just be honest that a better opportunity has suddenly come up and it's nothing personal (unless it is).

For people that have plenty of job experience.. How long should you work somewhere before being employed somewhere else? I've been working crappy retail for almost two months now. Don't enjoy it at all and doing it solely for my payments, like plenty of other people.

Figuratively speaking if I did have another job lined up..

Do I need to stay longer before I put in my two weeks?

No.

There are no rules about how long you should stay at a job.

Yeah, that'll work. They probably just need it to close out your personnel file.

But make sure that you get paid for all your hours worked plus your accrued vacation.

I've quit two jobs after the first day and gave 0 notice.

I always wanted to quit Best Buy during the middle of my shift, but I never had the balls to do it. Ended up doing a two-week notice and getting scheduled for HORRIBLE shifts during those two weeks. All for a worthless reference.
