Radeon RX Vega thread

But why? It seems 70-100MH/s was a lie according to pcper:

This means 30-35MH/s, if I am not mistaken, so, why would miners bother.

Oh is that so? Ok then. I had heard mixed things from other sites. But I assume those were not actually tests, but what they had "heard". Like gamers Nexus stating they had independently confirmed it from "sources" lol.
 
The Vega56 is literally a 1070 according to those blurry Jpegssss.

This would be very weird as this isn't what you'd expect from peak flops comparison. I wonder if Vega's backend is truly fucked up in more ways than we can imagine? This would at least explain the weirdness of comparisons to Fiji.

1080FEs sell for up to $300 above the Vega 64 MSRP.

Well, pricing is... crazy, with some sites listing Vega 56 at $1000+ (europe), so... (which is no wonder, when 580's go for 380 Euro)


I don't keep up with US prices, but versions of the 1080 that are faster than a FE are selling for 525€ right now, while the MSRP for Vega 64 is 600€.

I can pay €611 for the Zotac Extreme edition of the 1080, which is one of the fastest editions of the card. I will wait but I don't have big hopes on Vega beating that anytime soon with these prices.

At 600€, I wouldn't expect it to sell well here in France.
As of right now you can get a custom 1080 for 479€
 
GTX 1080 performance is ample and will last a couple years (unless you're on 4K) so if it's same level with traditionally shite launch day drivers then this bodes well. AMD Finewine tech as well will add another 5% on top.

That selling it for you guys? No? Ok I'll get my coat.
 
Just got an email from Newegg, $599, one per customer at 9 am EST.

If the hash rates are really just 30-35mh I guess I'm back to waiting on 580s to go on sale somewhere.
 
It's what most of us expected
Vega64 around 1080FE level and Vega56 ahead of the 1070FE with the 56 variant being the more interesting of the two
 
Without EU/UK pricing at the moment it all feels a little meaningless. Vega 56 is looking at around 10% performance improvement over a 1070 at the cost of around a 25% peak power increase. But currently no pricing to weigh that up so who knows if it's worth it.

Do we have any rough EU pricing?
 
Well, so far Vega 56 is a solid competitor to 1070, as one would expect.

Vega 64 on the other hand fails at competing with 1080 even at the same price point.

Well, it still uses more power than a stock 1080ti to deliver 1070 level performance (a bit more in some games, a bit less in others). Not exactly great, but certainly better than the 64.

Back when it was revealed that Vega would have all those architectural improvements (including, particularly, tiled rasterization) I expected a lot more. The gaming performance per GFLOP (and per Watt) is rather dreadful here.
 
Seems like the 56 is a solid card for someone with a freesync monitor. If it really does come out at $399. 64 seems like a terrible deal compared to the 1080.

I'm an idiot, I should've bite for that GTX 1080 for 400€.

Not really 1080Ti, no, closer to that of 1080OC. It's performance is at least somewhat higher than that of 1070 which kinda justify its drawbacks in power consumption and noise. For someone with a 1080p/1440p FreeSync display a custom Vega 56 with a proper cooler should be a nice card.

TBIR would help more on a narrower bus I think. It's also not so much having a feature as having it implemented properly. AMD's DCC is still a couple of gens behind NV for example, no reason to expect any different in TBIR implementation.

Higher power draw generally converts into higher noise and/or higher heat, no matter the cooler. So this drawback will always be there although custom cards will likely make it less of an issue for a user.

Yeah, that's more or less another way to say the same thing. Tthe really wild thing about this is that Fury was already a bit of a disappontment gaming efficiency wise given the raw specs (in terms of GFLOPs and memory bandwidth). I expected the follow-up of that to mitigate those weaknesses and be better at translating raw performance into games, not do even worse at that.

It seems to vary quite a bit depending on the review -- I was looking at Computerbase who have the 56 consuming more power in their game average than the 1080ti FE.

That's in DirectX 11 according to the text so not really surprising.
A. AMD's DX11 driver is still crap.
B. They basically stopped improving it now that they push DX12 instead delegating the same work to developers now.
