Radeon RX Vega thread

Outlook not looking rosy so far. Price is going to be key here.

We will see if they are able to compete at the high end again with Navi because I assume there will be no variant of gaming with be more powerful than FE.

They said the gaming variant would be faster than FE. Doubt they were lying

Will it be much more powerful? Unlikely since the gains would primarily be due to drivers... but I can see the card falling between 1080 and 1080 Ti, probably closer to 1080.

1080 gains at a cheaper price and freesync is good for me

I fully expected these results. Vega too late and too little to compete with Nvidia. While the FE edition is not the gaming variant, I doubt the silicon is going to be any better. In fact, considering the price the mainstream vega will most likely be slower if there are no software issues with the results we have seen so far. The GTX 1080 is very similar in performance at half the price and almost half the power requirements. I feel bad for anyone who waited this long for this.

Wait for Volta :P

The issue is realistically how much faster? Personally don't see it as being more than 10% given they just also told PCper that is no performance difference between Pro/Gaming drivers on FE has it's just a switch exposing more gaming options in the radeon settings UI.

Was really hoping for some competition. Will be interesting in the future to find out where the failures happened with vega. None of the architectural improvements seem to be giving any performance uplift

PCPer did a Radeon Vega Frontier Edition LIVE Benchmarking stream yesterday.
You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhGAS_oGN3c (skip to 4:33:00 for results and a quick comparison with other cards in 1440p and 4k).

I didn't watch all of it, but here is a short summary

-They spoke to AMD about the driver. It's good to go, according to AMD. (jump to 23:20)
-The card is only able to hold 1440 MHz while under load, Temperature is around 83°C.
-It needs around 300W Power.
-Performance in games is rather underwhelming. It sits in between a 1070 and a 1080.
It was very close to 1080Ti performance in Fallout 4 @ 1440p, but than again slower than a 1080 (non Ti) @ 4k. They stated that they want to redo the FO4 1440p benchmark for their review.

Pretty crazy results. Actually almost unbelievable...like an upclocked FuryX without much improvement. And there was a node change, too. Wtf.

If it stays like this, maybe with some small improvements, the only explanation i can think of is that most of the money went into Zen, which is a major success indeed but this is still crazy, cash strapped or not.

I have no clue why this level of performance is requiring 300W.

Hopefully this is caused by some developer-only focus services that are active on the die. I really hope that consumer GPUs will have better performance.

Yeah, honestly it makes no sense. Why releasing it this late then?

There must be problems with either the drivers or the FE. I refuse to believe this is Vega's gaming performance. I refused to keep waiting for this card and went for a GTX1060, but plan to upgrade my rig to switch to 4K either later this year or early next year. I really want Vega to deliver but, man, this looks really bad.

I'm sure it will be at least slightly better for the commercial launch, but the first red flag was the highly unimpressive prey demo where they cross fired the cards.

Gaming variants will probably be able to hold 1600 MHz more easy, maybe even more. This should push performance by ~10% and maybe we will get another +10% with better drivers. Still, that's not a significant enough boost to make me sell my 1080 and it's for sure also not good enough for 4k/60 at v. high settings.
I really hoped for Vega to be a good and affordable 4k card... I'm a bit dissapointed so far.

After Fury X and Polaris, I literally did not expect this shitshow from AMD.
I would love to know what went wrong with Vega. It's like... nothing improved.

NV manages to leap frog itself in a gen while AMD manages to jump and ignominously fall on itself while letting out a wet fart.

Honestly... I am pretty disappointed.

That's because they have been recycling the same GCN core for almost 7 years now. It's the same problem they had before Zen trying to compete with Intel, they simply don't have the budget they need to keep up with Nvidia. It's a miracle that GCN has even lasted this long, Nvidia's on like their 4th new architecture since when GCN originally debuted back in 2011.

If and when they finally replace GCN with an entirely new architecture, that's when they'll have their Zen moment in GPUs.

Vega is supposed to be a completely new architecture, according to AMD PR so far.

It's a nice come back but there's nothing like waiting for the RX Vega gaming cards.

Once they have released VEGA gaming cards we should benchmark these in games.

It would be nice to see AMD coming back in terms of competition on the high end since high end gamers like me who usually play at high resolution and high refresh rate only have NVIDIA as an option

The nvidia prices right now are just absurd. A msi or asus 1070 costs almost 500€ in germany. The 970 at this point was at 350€ and had a bigger die size. We really need competition again.

For real. I'm desperate to move on from my 970 but not at current prices. :\

Currently they are insane, probably because of the mining craze. For the last two months you were able to get some 1070s for just over 400€ though (and some 1080s for around 500€).

I saw 1070s for 380€ a couple of months ago. Current prices are because of mining.

Did they actually said "faster than FE" or was it more of a "better for gaming"? RX Vega will certainly be better for gaming if it will provide the same performance for half the price, doesn't mean that it will be faster.

They'll also be in a pretty grim situation if RX Vega won't be able to beat 1080 by at least 10% on average as this will mean that they'll have to price it below 1080's $499 which is pretty cheap for a card with ~500mm^2 chip with HBM2 and 300W consumption.

Maybe Raja isnt the guy AMD needs.
Vega 10 was done prior to Raja's comeback to the RTG. Navi is realistically the first gen where Raja's new leadership matters.

It's not. AMD's PR has said so many stupid things already during the last couple of years that I don't know why anyone's still listening to them.

I wondered the exact same thing so I tracked down the quote:

Raja said:
Consumer RX will be much better optimized for all the top gaming titles and flavors of RX Vega will actually be faster than Frontier version!

Still doesn't tell us much, but that's the point.

Looks like he is basically beating on driver and game optimizations to be faster than FE... and not better clocks.

Maybe they can gain more 10% in performance via drivers until the RX Vega release.

Well, there are many ways to interpret the "flavours of RX Vega" part... If we say compare a WC RX Vega for ~$600 with an AC Vega FE for $1000 then sure, it will certainly be faster. But will it be faster than a WC Vega FE?
