Rainbow Six: Siege is my favorite multiplayer tactical FPS in years

The backstory:

When RB6:Siege was first shown at E3 2014, I enjoyed what they showed but I was pretty sure I wouldn't be picking up the game based on it being a multiplayer focused title and my friends being very finicky about what games they play/pick up.
I kept looking at footage of the game and how it progressed, changing it's presentation massively but keeping the core elements they presented alive and well.

I then got a beta invite in 2015 and managed to play a couple of hours on one of the days and while I really enjoyed what I played, I was again sure that without playing this with friends I should not be picking it up and I also felt that the gaming community as a whole would pass over the game, since the beta showed some problems with gameplay and balance which people were very sure at the time Ubisoft would not fix till release.

Lo and behold, release day comes around and one of my friends actually got the game which prompted me to follow and play together.
Immediately I could tell that Ubisoft had taken many criticisms from the beta to heart and switched things around and I started to greatly enjoy not just playing through the situations to get renown to unlock new operators, but of course to play the actual PvP multiplayer.
Many many times I would get my entirely random team to communicate over in-game VOIP and strategize, call out and work together and the rounds we played were sometimes so intense I was shaking after it ended (in either defeat or victory).

Then Ubisoft had a "free weekend" (they gave out codes to every owner they could give to their friends) and 2 more of my friends loved the game so much they picked it up. 2 more would quickly follow suit and by now Siege has become our go-to multiplayer game where 3-5 of us basically play together every day.
Some of the most intense, tactical, actiony and sometimes hilarious moments in my last couple of gaming years have come from this game over just the 1 1/2 months it has been out.

The evidence:
I do not wish to advertise my channel here, but allow me to post 4 rounds of me and my friends playing as examples of gameplay

In this round we work together to breach in, plant the defuser and then keep it safe till we win. This is the kind of teamwork experience that happens basically every round in the game, not just with friends but also with randoms on VOIP.

This round shows one of those "shaking at the end" situations where I end up having to play 1vs3 and winning the round for my team. I know these moments aren't unique to Siege, but it still feels absolutely fantastic and not every game can produce this feeling.

Then you have rounds like these where your team and you just work together so well, you actually beat the enemy team through intel, skill and tactics and don't lose a single man during it. These rounds just feel absolutely amazing afterwards.

And then of course you have the hilarious rounds where weird stuff just happens (or doesn't at all I guess)

The epilogue:

I love the way that each Operator has a unique ability and equipment, intro video and personality, making them almost MOBA champion-esque.

I love that the maps in the game (11 of them) are big, have tons of different approaches and because of the reinforcement and defending mechanics (like shields and barbed wire and barricades) they are different every round and you can approach them differently depending on who is on your or the enemy team.

I love that depending on which gun and equipment I choose for my operator, even though the actual amount of options is small, it can really change your playstyle depending on who you play as.

I love the drones and the cameras in the game and how providing intel is one of the most important things in the game. This includes the superb audio design that allows you to accurately tell where and how far away things are happening. The audio even changes depending on the holes in the walls!

Most of all,I love that I found a game again that me and my friends play every day and we not only get better at it, but we still find new things in the maps and new approaches basically every day. A single little hole in a wall that you can see through can completely change the outcome of a round.

The game, in my opinion, is great and can only get better and bigger from here (all DLC for the game is free. All maps, all modes, all operators)

The verdict:

The game has been growing it's community (according to steamcharts.com and steamspy.com) since release and after the holidays were over, ubisoft has been properly releasing patches (on PC first no less!) ,fixing server issues and communicating very openly with the community.
If you were wary about the game based on previous promotional videos or some early reviews (many influenced by the beta experience) then I urge you to check the game out now. It is a fantastic multiplayer game, whether on console or PC and the "just one more round/match" vibe with this is as strong as Counter-Strike used to be for me years ago.

I'm not going to tell you that you will love it as I do, but I damn sure ask you to take a chance.

Great post.

If I'm just getting it now, how far behind will I be in a community of people who have been playing this game for weeks?

I started cs go yesterday and while it's been a classic for years, I think siège deserves to take the crown. It's simply better.

Not as far as you think, the game has many new players and continues to get them.

The GAF community is also very big and has people to help you out.

The game is only 1 1/2 months old,so it's not as "analyzed" as CS:GO for example.

Considering how bugged it was / not giving exp and renown after matches / you'll catch up in no time!

Snark aside I'm loving this game too. I haven't enjoyed an MP fps game like this in a long time. When everyone on your team uses their operator correctly...it's a thing of beauty. I love attacking with a wall of shields. Just watch out for the nitro.

I love this game, it's taken away the time that I usually spend with on CSGO.

Has potential to grow bigger and be an esport if Ubisoft really cares about it.

I'm picking it up next time it's on sale digitally on ps4. I still kick myself for skipping it when it went on sale for $40.

I play TLOUR daily [survivor mode, 1 life per round] and used to play Socom and Counterstrike, so this game feels like it's in the same vein. I've watched some vid and love everything I see, though it does look somewhat complex to a newcomer [well, not complex so much as understanding that vets will know a lot of little secrets, like how and where to break small holes in the wall/barriers for good sight lines] but that will all come with experience.

I played it over the free weekend, it was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. The biggest reason I haven't picked it up since then though was the netcode seemed bad and there were often times where my internet had awful connections (Like some matches would be mid 60s and then I'd follow a string of 5 with 1 or 2 matches of 166 or so)

I disagree.

I think ADS fucks up the gameplay of Rainbow Six. In CSGO if you know a guy is holding an angle, you can just quickly peek and with good crosshair placement, 1 tap him. R6 would benefit greatly from this considering it's a game where you can place a shield next to a wall so that you can hide behind this little crack.

It's a great game, but there's some design choices that I feel holds the game back from truly being the best FPS.

It is quite an amazing game and I'm glad its sorta fixed now. Can't wait to see what the dlc is of.

I do hate getting hip fired and one shotted to the head

Agree wholeheartedly. I can't stop playing it.

There is just something about the versatility and depth of the tactical options given to you that makes it never boring.

Really hope we see a competitive scene develop around this game, because I'd want to be a part of it, and damnit its fun to watch.
hows the ps4 community?

Great. I think the game was #7 on NPD so its selling well.

There are some assholes, but there are also a lot of teamwork focused players.

This game is probably the biggest surprise for me of the last couple years. I expected to get it and have a few fun nights with my friends but instead we have been playing it almost non stop since release. It's fantastic.

Everything in this game bleeds commitment to an idea. They had their vision of one life to live 5v5 and stuck to it. No periphery modes of respawning deathmatch where anyone can pick anything that would suck up new players who don't want to sit out rounds while dead and actually learn the game. Just pure 5v5 modes based on one life to live with simple objectives.

There isn't a million guns to unlock and perks to choose while on a 100 hour grinding treadmill like almost every other modern shooter. Spend a couple nights getting every operator and you are set. Everything from then on is about tactics and skill.

I highly recommend anyone looking for a good mp shooter to try it.

Also, don't listen to GiantBomb's complete bullshit spiel about the monetization of this game. It's a gross misrepresentation that has done way more harm than it should have. This game has cosmetic skins that don't affect gameplay at all and can be unlocked with XP or bought. The new maps, modes, and operators are free for everyone. It is the complete opposite example of an exploitative business model, and is instead one of the fairest.

On PC there is a gaf discord that has been really active and usually has a few different groups going every night. Check the thread if you want to find a group

I agree. Siege is such a fantastic shooter.

Some hiccups with the server and UBI publishing it has caused harm to what should have been a more popular game.

I only hope people give it a shot and not be so instantly dismissive once they hear UBI.

This game is indeed fantastic. However, one thing I really dislike about the game is the headshot damage. It takes only one shot to the head to instantly kill someone. Fuck realism, it's not fun to get instadeathed by some dweeb hip spraying a pistol halfway across the map.

Siege (on pc) is the best between bf4 and cod. (WHEN IT WORKS)

After playing siege for a few weeks and returning to play a few bf4 matches I see myself changing play style, being more cautious , cnserving ammo and also trying to lean around corners :) I can definately say siege improved my gameplay with other shooters except Dirty Bomb. That is only comparable to Q3. And to tell you the truth for the painless, quick and "dirty" team play experience dirty bomb still reins supreme between these. Of course CS is still in another league but there are many pros there now and it doesn't have individual "jobs" -engineer, sniper etc.- so tend to play it really rarely these days.

What honestly has surprised me the most is how long this game has stayed on the top 10 best sellers on steam, I expected many PC gamers to drop this game early on.

The gameplay in Siege is incredible. Best of this generation. It is a refreshing change of pace from the typical twitch shooter every FPS seems to be aspiring to be. It is unfortunate it is bogged down by the Fee to play aspects to it. Also, this game should have been priced near $30 to launch.

If you check Steamcharts.com for the game, the concurrent players actually ROSE over the first month (granted, christmas time and winter sale) and have been staying very steady. The game has been in the top 25 played games on Steam for a while now.

I have to say, I never planned on playing this but I needed up buying it for £28 on Amazon. Now I can't put it down, completed all the situations first to 3 stars then jumped into the multiplayer. Having such a blast and it's even better when you play with some mates, haven't touched black ops since I got this.

I watched JP and Day9 stream it a couple of weeks ago and that cemented my plan to buy. Currently building a new PC so I can get in on the action.

There is literally 0 reason to pay for the boosters. I have roughly 30-50 hours in it and have every operator unlocked and at least 1 weapon on each is kitted out with attachments.

This game has the least offensive micro transactions of 2016.

That's why i love this game so much. One headshot should kill, everything else doesn't feel right to me.

I am not really sure what you mean by "Fee to play"? The initial buy price?

I've had RS-Siege since launch and I've been loving every minute of it.

Terrorist Hunt is a blast and the multiplayer is exciting. The overall design of the game is well done and the server issues seem to be sorted out.

My main gripe with the game is with the concept of the multiplayer. It's a great concept, but the objective, no matter what it is, is basically irrelevant, and all matches basically become "Death-Match".

I rarely play a match where the objective is actually secured. IDK what could be done to make the objective more appealing or a more viable option, opposed to just killing everyone, but in its current state, the objective is irrelevant.

All this being said, I'd love to see a Team Death-Match added to the game, but only if they opened up the entire map and allowed gameplay inside and outside of the buildings.

You can fight terrorists outside...so why not?

If it had a much more fleshed out co-op I'd totally join you in that party. Still will if that's the kind of thing that could be added in as an update down the line. The sandbox looks great, and the gameplay looks tuned and properly tense.

So on the gameplay its already won my heart. But the free-to-play elements and focus on competitive over interesting AI and co-op means I'll only buy in when it reaches a pretty low price.

I'd like it to do well enough for itself though, even if only to provide some justification for developing more shooters that require and reward tactical play. We need more of those, especially on the consoles.

I completely agree absolutely love this game. When it was first announced I never thought I would actually enjoy it as much as I do. It has the perfect amount of challenge and is incredibly rewarding. Easily my favorite competitive fps in years

I agree. It's the only game I've played since it released. I love coordinating with my squad on breaches and seeing the plan succeed. This latest patch makes the game feel so much better on the console. I can't wait for the new operators to come out.

I want to get it for PC, but I'm worried if the community will decline by the time I do get it (probably another 2 months at least). It was a lot of fun in the beta on PS4, but from what I heard, the PC is the place to be for this game.

If you have GCU it's $40 at bestbuy right now.

Yes. $60 is a lot to ask for a game that cluttered with free to play elements. For example, the grind to unlock operators and customization make it enticing to the user to pay real world money to use boosters on in-game currency to unlock those items a lot quicker. Then in addition, there are certain items that are only unlockable with R6 credits.
