Rare: Kameo should have "scrapped everything and started again"

Only 360 game they have made that really matters is Jetpac Refuelled. Now there is a game you can set your watch to!

It's funny, I sort of gave up on this generation due to loss of interest around end of 2007/early 2008 and when I think back Kameo is probably one of the few games I will look back on and get nostalgic about. I don't think it was a AAA game but it was the first 360 game to welcome me to the current generation with high class visuals, an appealing genre (adventure/platformer-ish) and some decent replay value.

And for those who can't believe those who think Kameo is the best Rare output this generation, you've got to understand for those who truly loved what Rare used to create, Kameo is the closest thing. When you play Kameo you can relate it to Jet Force Gemini, Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day/Live Reloaded, Donkey Kong 64, Star Fox Adventures, Donkey Kong Country and hell even Grabbed by the Ghoulies. Viva Pinata, while a great game, is completely different to what most N64 Rare fans expect from the company.

I played Kameo and it's actually pretty decent game. Story, characters and art design are complete crap but there's some good gameplay in it to carry it through. If they want to talk about games that should never have been made, Perfect Dark Zero is way worse than Kameo.

Some of the character art is pretty bad yes but I'm not sure where the overall art criticism comes from.

As far as achieving a fantasy land goes, Kameo is easily one of the better efforts. The various vistas in the game all look quite brilliant, not because they're technically fantastic but because they're well-composed too. Take the lake in the Enchanted Kingdom, for instance. The various animals the scurry and float around, the rainbow suspended above the water, the seashells...in fact just typing it out reminds me how well Kameo created its world. A lot of it also had to do with both the fantastic music as well as the environmental sounds. It's just such an ethereal atmosphere.

Like I said, quite a few of the NPCs (and Kameo) don't look flash but there's a lot to like as far as art goes. Plus even some of the characters look pretty good, such as those around the Enchanted Kingdom or the hilarious creatures in Snowtop, and the actual warriors are both superbly designed and animated. They have a ton of character.

That is a good game!

I was hoping they'd revisit some of their other Speeccy games like that. Sadly, well.. heh.

I forgot about that game, it kicks ass. I wish kept with it long enough to beat it.

Rare need to fucking get onto Making Killer Instinct 3, but then again, that shit would only make sense.

I see this posted far more than it should be.

Pure nostalgia talking.

It's weird how they insult pretty much everyone and anyone. It's like they no longer have a will to live.

EDIT: Beaten by "Rare is a bloated corpse." :lol

Of course they don't.

Rare is Sisyphus, pushing a virtual boulder up a polygonal mountain for eternity via the wonder of Kinect.

Personally, didn't care for the creature designs. Grass/trees were nice though. It's been years since I played it, but I remember that outside the fortresses the world was pretty generic.

Damn, I knew Kameo defenders were hardcore, but defending it from the guys who made it saying it's crap...respect.

Try reading again , he doesn't say it's crap just that he thinks it's not a game for the Xbox Audience .
It's an old style Rare game developed with the Nintendo audience in mind .

God i hate shooters. currently playing killzone 2 and its plain boring.
You're probably playing the wrong ones. For instance, Killzone 2 sucks.

Weird to hear a bloke from Rare calling Nintendo "kiddy." Rare's entire library is almost a replica of Nintendo's.

George Andreas can fuck right off.

Fuck Kameo. Why do they never talk about Nuts and Bolts? the last mention of Banjo after it was, uh, in that sonic racing game? make Nuts and Bolts 2 already. You can't even find another game to satisfy the urge for Nuts and Bolts gameplay. At least Kameo is acknowledged.

I've never played Kameo but I thought Gaffers viewed it as one of the better 360 launch titles?

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=263426

actually 360 launched with Call of Duty 2 and PGR3 for the audience that dude is wandering about..
then they (rare) also had out PDZ day1 too.

Cameo was a female elf(or fairy with elf ears??!) that ..flew and.... shifted shapes.

if his biggest problem was if the main character looked more like an elf or a fairy -when not changed into some hairy, cute animal etc to remind you-
then I guess he doesn't get it.

for the record, day1 I got my 360 with CoD2 and PGR3, I was so satisfied by those two that next morning I went back and bought Cameo and PDZ.
All four games completed their task for me, with Cameo being the beautiful arcade game (that had a very nice scoring system and could be played like an old arcade) and PDZ the online campaign co-op shooter thing.

For those interested in this George Andreas guy:

* Started out working in Q&A, debugging releases from 90s Rare
* Became involved in contributing ideas to Banjo-Kazooie (released 1998)
* Involved in development of Donkey Kong 64 (released 1999)
* Became director of Kameo (released 2005)

It's not meant to be a insult. Calm yourself. Rare obviously want to be making those "kiddy" games but don't think the 360 is the right audience for them.

Also, people are deluding themselves if they don't think Nintendo's primary audience aren't kids.

Remember, it doesnt matter what the game sold or what it scored or how it was well liked. What does matters is that it could have sold more, scored higher or been more popular as a FPS. Games industry today.

Unfortunately, your right. :(

Kameo's quest always makes me think of the child Link portion of Ocarina of Time. It's a solid adventure game, has some great ideas, fun gameplay...and then, around the time you should be turning into adult Link and tackling longer, deeper dungeons, the game is just over. :lol

Hell no.
If they do a Banjo game,it better be Banjo Threeie.

N&B bombed horribly. I would be surprised if MS bothered with another Banjo game, at least this gen.

Viva Pinata, on the other hand, is an absolute masterpiece if you're into the simulation genre. It still has a weird disconnect from having childish-cutesy presentation and pretty slick, complex mechanics, but it really is an excellent game, particularly at the higher levels.

True true true true true true.

I think trying to pigeonhole the 360 audience as a whole and/or individuals as people who just want to shoot stuff is a pointless exercise. An exercise that enforces the stereotype.

My two favorite games on 360 are Viva Pinata and Gears of War, clearly the stereotype is broken.

It doesn't seem to me that he thought it should have been scrapped, just that the lead character should've been something more pleasing to the Xbox demographic, instead of a fairy (pretending to be an elf). Isn't Rare's purpose supposed to be opening up the Xbox audience by bringing in games/characters not usually associated with the Xbox brand, like fairies, pinatas in a garden, and a bear playing with Legos?

Thank you, Microsoft :(
Where is that from? Is it another image from the canceled Kameo 2?

^ Kameo was fine as a fairy. I never knew they wanted her to be an "elf". she had fucking wings and looked like Tinkerbell.

It's still Rare's best game this gen. Shows just how much they still don't get it.
agreed.

it needed a bit more fine-tuning...I found the game fit like a loose glove instead of a snug one in the context of HAVING to use certain spirits in certain situations more often...but the core was there and was solid.

a Kameo 2 with a better, more deliberate elemental switching mechanic and longer Zelda-like gameplay + the same caliber of music accompaniment = legendary.

Kameo was a pretty good launch title. If any game should have went back to the drawing board it was that god awful Perfect Dark Zero. That game sucked. Everything about it was wrong from the graphics to the horrible controls

Haha. You haven't played Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise right?

It was definitely a great launch title, and only PGR3 and King Kong rivaled it in my opinion. They can make another one and completely redo everything, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
