Rarely mentioned PS1 games that you enjoy

Ah yeah and Soul of Samurai/Ronin Blade. What a cool oddity that game was, Resident Evil style game but was kind of the Onimusha game in prototype phase, clunky as all hell but the atmosphere was good in this one. Plus plenty of replay value with two different routes/characters to play as.

Probably isn't that great but I remember enjoying it as a kid.

This game, one of the best game I played and sadly I've never owned the game. Played the demo for countless hours

Oh man, my friend back in high school was the only one with the retail version. We would take turns bringing it home. The whole game was amazing.

From Software's games of that era too like:

Echo Night
Shadow Tower
King's Field series
Shadow_tower_box.jpg

Always loved the cover art for Shadow Tower. It's a shame I sold it for like $10 a few years ago. Now it's worth upwards of $80. ;(

The King's Field and Shadow Tower games were boss as hell. From Software was making masterful dungeon crawlers for years, and it wasn't until Demon's Souls that everybody noticed.
Miscellaneous games no one talks about anymore:
Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions - spent so many hours on this back in the day in anticipation of MGS2.
Better than regular Metal Gear Solid IMO. In VR missions they actually force you to master the game's mechanics. I didn't even know you could run and shoot at the same time until I was forced to to get past the AK Weapon missions. There's also an amazing set of missions where you use guards as dominoes.

Rogue Trip was the only worthwhile sequel twisted metal 2 ever got.

Panzer Bandit
Adventures of little Ralph
Ghost in the Shell
Silhouette Mirage

Goddamn, at least three people mentioned Silent Bomber. Thank god I'am not the only one who remembers that game. iirc, CC2 did that game. I saw someone play it and it looked awesome. The things I would do for a spiritual successor or at least a remaking of it on Steam.

Einhander GOAT. Sequel when?

I liked Tiny Tank, as well.

LAPD Future Cop was insane. I think EA did the game. Brigador is the indie equivalent to it and it's on Steam. It's early access, still.

TM Black would like to have a word with you.

Also, speaking of real sequels by that team, STREAK was the only worthwhile sequel Jet Moto 2 ever got.

Man the PS1 was a golden time... I thank Sony for all the good memories ... As for the rarely mentioned game... It has to be magic carpet...

OMEGA BOOST!

Crazy as hell story.

There was a topic about Sony Polyphony long ago on here and someone joked about how super detailed an Omega Boost sequel would be with a modern Polyphony.

PaRappa!

Rogue Trip (should be in the TM canon I loved it so much)

Bushido Blade (one hit kills ftw)

Disruptor (an oft underappreciated fps from a studio that is jussst a bit well known now, but weren't then)

For the time I would have thought it was Legend of Dragoon.

But that game seems to have more people that played it and mention it on NeoGAF than I would have ever thought.

Holy Fuck I remember this game! Had a demo disc that had this on it, and I remember this game scared the hell out of me for some reason. Looking back on it, it definitely has a dark souls/ demon souls vibe to it.

Played the hell out of the demo on one of the Underground discs. It was completely untranslated and the first time I heard any other language remotely foreign.

Also played the demo to hell. Most of my nostalgia comes from those Underground Jampack demo discs since my parents couldn't always afford fully priced games

UPDATE: I just remembered this one. Never heard from it again but have fond memories.

Forgot to mention Legend of Mana. I've never played the predecessor, so I can't judge how good it is, but it seems people talk about Secret of Mana more fondly.

Legend of Mana is a beautiful game. It was ahead of its time with its non linear approach and scattering side quests. That said, the lack of focus is also its downfall,
It has tons of things to do from breeding, smithing, alchemy, and creating your own golem. You can also use a variety of weapons with variety of skills, so the combat rarely gets stale.

Did I mention the graphic?? it's stupidly gorgeous.

I fucking loved this game as a kid. I liked it more than Crash Ttr team racing / wipeout / mario kart / wtv. This was my jam.

I think it was only released in Europe though.

Probably isn't that great but I remember enjoying it as a kid.

This game was hyped a lot back then, because it was from the team that made Terranigma. I never played this game, but was this game any good? Because I dont think the Terranigma/Illusion of Gaia team makes bad games.

Wow, there's a lot of really cool/weird looking games in this thread that I really want to play! Makes me kind of bummed I pretty much completely missed the PS1.

I loved Evil Zone. It's stupidly simple, but in the pre-Naruto UNS/Budokai Tenkaichi era, it was about the most anime-feeling game I could imagine. (Broke my heart that the localization cut all the amazing voice actors from Eretzvaju)

It's gained some notoriety of late, but Rising Zan was a blast.

My very first PS1 game:

I was a huge Earthworm Jim fan on the Genesis and this being from the same team was an easy sell. Plus, look at those bullet points! I'll never forget the one that describes the last boss as "his face is the size of New York!"

Edit: Beaten

The PS1 is full of games like this. The system really shined when it came to random gems nobody has heard of.

I'll go with:

It's basically Resident Evil with samurai. Fixed camera angle, tank controls, etc. It works really well. The game's a lot of fun and has some great music. It didn't review terribly well, which I suspect is largely because it came out in 1999, after Konami had just released MGS and in a time where there were an awful lot of RE clones out there. But it's good.

Still love this game. Anime Spy Vs. Spy, couch competitive combat game.

Granstream Saga

I dunno if this game is actually any good but I finished it and liked it a lot at the time. Action RPGs were kind of a dying breed since FF7 and Tactics took off, so I attached myself to this weird ass, real-time RPG with characters that had no faces.

6. Thousand Arms

People rarely mentioned this game when the topic of PS1’S JRPG comes up. This game is just silly fun.
This is probably the first RPG that incorporate dating sim in it. By dating you can get new skills/spells and forge stronger weapons.
It has a traditional turn based battle system with a little bit of twist and the voice acting is very well done.

Damn it. OK, this:

Nightmare Creatures.

Think Bloodborne on PS1. That is basically what this game was. I have no idea what the critics or gamers thought of this game but I really enjoyed it playing it together with a friend watching back then.

General consensus was that it was garbage, because it was. "Bloodborne on PS1 made by people who didn't know how hitboxes or responsive controls work" would be a more accurate description.

I never see this game get brought up. I played the shit out of it when I first got my PS1. It probably sucks now.

Oh, it sucked then, too. I played maybe an hour of it and took it back. One of the few games I have ever returned to the store for a refund in my life.

Love this game, it also has an amazing soundtrack.
