Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Official Thread

I'm at asteroid ring station and I like it so far, but it feels kind of.... not punchy enough. There're tons of weapons for exploding things but I don't get that POWness from any of them (none of them are at level 5 yet). I don't know if it's sound or visual or rumble or what, things feel a bit short of razor sharpness of say Mario or Zelda. Hitting things with wrench doesn't feel crunchy like in Zelda, destroying things doesn't feel POWy like even non-action games like Zack & Wiki, and "shine get" mini animation sequence is just not sharp and exciting as in Mario, Zelda, or Zack & Wiki. The last one is ridiculous but it kind of embodies the general looseness of the game I'm feeling. I think 5-10% of sharpening could really push the series from B+/A level to A++ level. Hopefully later stages will give me all the !!PUNCH!!1 I need, as I had similar feelings while playing resistance.

As far as sound goes, the fidelity in this game is unsurpassed by anything out right now. If you feel you're not getting enough punch or crispness, it will be because of your speaker set up. The game's sound design is impeccable.

7.5 is a good score last I checked. And yes, from my experience with the game and with past games, I'd give it somewhere between a 7.5 and an 8. The only area in which ToD surpasses its predecessors is graphics. Everything else either isn't improved upon at all or is a step back.
I think that, so far at least, ToD has smoother controls and better pacing than at least first R&C on PS2 that I've played to completion. Much better in fact.
Since I've played others a bit too, I can say that the comment about the controls being better in ToD applies to them as well.

Better graphics, sound and even much better story (than 1st one at least) are huge pluses as well, and so is the better humor that is punctuated through numerous voice overs during gameplay - something that other games lacked.

Whatever they did, the game is just more fun to play, and that should be all that matters.

I'm stuck in level 4
Fastoon. The part where i have to control Clank to get the 5th item. I'm at the beginning, and have no idea what i'm supposed to do. Those 3 things just stood around...and there's a door blocking me
. What do i to do?

I know it must have been mentioned fifty times by now, the commercial was fucking great stuff.

Yeah, also saw it during Raw and thought it was great. Alot better than those "white room" PS3 ads.

Press triangle and have the zoni (small alien dudes) follow you.

So what channels are showing the commercial now? I keep seeing Eye of Judgement but have yet to catch R&C >_<

End spoiler:

So I guess the next game in the series is going to be a Clank game, eh?

As for the game, well, I started up a second run as soon as the credits had run their course. Why? Because I wanted to play more right away, and that's the only rating I'm going to give it. :D

That ad is pretty meh
On the contrary, it's exactly the kind of ad a PS3 needs right now. Something that looks and sounds fun and friendly. Enough with the creepy ads, they didn't seem to have done a great job anyways.

I just finished - wow, what a fun game! Really looking forward to the next one - I like how they ended this one. Now to unlock everything...

I still think Resistance looks better than R&C
Alright, sorry to bump an old post, but I was catching up with the thread, and I have to ask, how in the hell can you say something like this and not back it up?

I mean R&C levels have at least the same if not more geometry as anything in Resistance, very similar particle effects, much better textures (Resistance textures fall apart when you get close to almost anything), better shader effects on many kinds of materials, and all that at twice the framerate. There no comparison even.

I got it today and beat it today :(

From 4PM to 6AM (right now in Sweden). Really great game, thank you Insomniac! Time for bed :)

The funny thing about Resistance is that it looked its best when it approached Ratchet style environments. Metallic alien environments, and such. And of course, the chimera would fit right into the Ratchet world, assuming you gave them some shiny, bright armor.

I didn't want to de-rail the thread because both are great looking games.

I've seen you and others talk about R&C's textures, but I don't see them. Whenever I walk up to most objects/walls they looks like 640x480 textures. Resistance had that too and I remember taking pictures of how low-res many textures there were, but I swear there were more high-res textures in Resistance than R&C. Look at the freaking ground in the dino planet in R&C....it looks terrible. Rocks are terrible. I remember being on an elevator and the camera is forced to look at the floor and I went "wow, that's a nice high-res texture! I guess when you're going to be forced to stare at it for a few secs you better actually use a high-res one!" because it was so rare to have high-res textures in the game. I think R&C has more texture variety thanks to texture streaming, but the actual texture quality appears lower IMO.

Geometery seems about the same in both games. Maybe less in Ratchet. Most ratchet stuff is really simple geometery x lots of it to make huge scenes. Resistance had some absolutely insane geometry in the alien levels.

Effects. Resistance had better post-processing effects. The snow in Resistance is incredible and nothing in Ratchet gets anywhere near that.

Both games lack any sort of global lighting or lighting worth mentioning.

The models were better in Resistance. Ratchet's models are good, but outside Ratchet himself they aren't impressive poly-wise. Like the main girl looks straight out of a Jak game with slightly better geometery and textures. Resistance models for Hale and the chimera are pretty darn good. The weapons seemed to have more geometery in Resistance as well.

Animation is amazing in both games, with the nod going to Ratchet.

Like I said, both games are 9/10 in the graphics department. But I think Resistance looks sharper and better (thanks to effects) in most cases, but the trade-off is half the framerate.

That's great. You show me a single high-res wall. I can spend all day taking pictures showing you 20 low-res walls. Then you can show me 20 high-res textures, and I'll show you 20 low-res textures.

It's kind of pointless to argue. I think the game has weak textures. That's my opinion. It's no Uncharted or Gears in that department. Though the overall art design for Ratchet is really nice.

I dont know...resistance did have some nice looking levels...but it also had some incredibly bland look levels, that looked bad...overall I would say R & C looks much better...Ive completed resistance by the way, and enjoyed it

overall, textures are really great for that kind of games. Many times ive looked at them and "wow" . Jak/ Ratchet on ps2 had some of the shittiest texture on ps2 and here, ratchet have some incredible

eh, I wouldn't put jak in there...some texture were quite good (playing Jak 3 now), and the overall graphics were incredible

I think the first 3 levels of Resistance looks terrible. But from 4 on it's pretty nice looking and sometimes amazing (the snow levels). The tank vs. spider battle in the snow is probably the best looking thing I've seen on a PS3 game to date.

O_O

jak 3 was the best looking game last gen imo, even more so than god of war 2 and ninja Gaiden. it was fucking incredible and running at 60fps to boot.

the ps2 shouldn't be producing those graphics and texture filtering

ND am gods.

Hey, i was just saying that Jak/Ratchet on ps2 have some really really low texture, yet they manage to be one of the most beautiful game last gen. Now, ratchet on ps3 has the same polish as it had on ps2, but with incredible texture, thats all :D

Honestly, have you played HS...the final battle honestly blows away anything in resistance...graphically HS>>>Resistance. Like I said it definitely has some nice looking parts, namely when you are fighting the goliath, and I actually quite enjoyed the game (not an fps fan)...but it definitely isnt the best looking game on the ps3...HS is the best looking game Ive played, and that includes gears no doubt. Actually, I completed FFXII over the summer and the final battle in that game impressed me far more than anything in Resistance...the effects were incredible

Yay, finally picked this game up today (stupid wal-mart) and i am having a great time. Not sure how far i am. Played for a good 5 hours straight tho.

Couple problems, and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. *It's only happened 3 times so far.

When entering my ship and it's about to go to a cut scene it will instead just go to a black screen, and this pops up.

Get: 02681338
Put: 02128c14
Ref: ffffffff

Pre: 58888888888
Pest: 58888888888

Now i'm not sure if this is exactly what it says. I'm on an SD display and it's hard to read. But it will just sit at this black screen with this on it, forcing me to restart my console >< Luckily it's still saving before it happens so I'm not losing any progress. Just kind of anoying is all.

fwiw I read that the same kind of snow is in r&c at some point, only even nicer or something.

Well, my copy arrived yesterday. Had to make the hour and a half round trip into work to pick it up (had the day off) and I've only had the chance to play it once since then.

So... um. Any particular trick to beating the final boss?

Are you playing a US game on a PAL console and PAL SDTV?

Grovatron + Maxed Incenerator = Easiest Boss ever. Just save three for the second part and he will fall very Quickly. Honestly, I was disappointed. No where near as hard as Nefarious or Vox.

The thing is, Resistance simply didn't have walls with such quality textures anywhere. Or any other upclose texture of that quality. R&C has literally tons and tons of them, I have no idea how come you've seen more of the bad textures because almost whenever I get close to anything I want to stop and admire what the surface looks like. And it's not just the texture, but the shaders they use on them as well.

Almost any metallic texture on the first planet, almost any of the funky stone walls on the second planet. Reisistance just didn't have anything like that.

It's strange you mention ground textures specifically, as that was the weak point for Gears too. Walls and stone structures looked great usually but for some reason ground dirt looked like something from a PS2 game. You don't remember that?

I was always pleasantly surprised by how much texture detail there was to see when you died in Resistance and your vision goes black and white. I think a fair amount of the texture and shader detail that is present in RFOM is easy to miss because Insomniac has a tendency to use lower contrast, more ambient lighting schemes. Even RCF does this in most cases. "Subtle beauty" strikes again, I guess, but there's a lot of detail that's easy to miss in RCF. Like Qwark's suit, for example - in several of the realtime cutscenes where he appears, his suit looks like it's a flat green. But there's a fine hexagonal fabric weave texture there too, if you catch it under the right light.

Was finally able to hear the music. Actually makes a big difference. That's much cooler than the white room ads by far. :D That'll hopefully sell some copies and PS3s.

JS, are we getting the release day podcast today :D or do we have to wait until Thursday? :(

Bonus question: Insomniac, how does it feel to know that you are primarily responsible for keeping the PS3 afloat in its lanch year and single handedly building the online community?

Wow, that commercial is pretty awesome, and you can finally see and hear what exactly is going on :lol

Love the music, love the little 'aaah' that Ratchet does at the end. It's really, really well directed.
