Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Official Thread

IS there a general enemy or whatnot that is commonly missed on the "everybody dance now" skillpoint I could swear I've gotten everyone. Do you have to get every single enemy, or just each type of enemy?

The second-to-last level. Make sure you get the different types of guys to dance. There is a bigger and better version of the main enemy towards the end of the level. It's been two months now so I can't remember the specific names now, but that tripped me up on that skill point and the net catching point.

Also, make sure you get all of the friendly NPCs to dance, too.

He probably got that one a while back with the Happy Feet skill point.

Unless he did that on his first playthrough (assuming he's on his second) he would have to do it again.

I bought this while doing my Christmas shopping, but I only started playing tonight. Oh my, it's so good. I'm feeling a little dumb for playing Mass Effect twice and letting this sit on the shelf.

Forgive me! I didn't know what I was doing!

I'm stuck on the Ublik Passage. Ooo er. I'm at a dead end and can't work out what to do. In front of me is a little floating ship/platform and above it is a barge that I can't reach no matter how I try. Any suggestions? It can't be this hard.

Not sure if I am thinking of the right part but I got stuck here for a little bit as well...

You need to throw a second heli thing to keep your platform afloat - then throw one to the left to turn on the fan. Continue to keep an eye on your heli thing on your platform as I believe you need to repeat that again.

It worked! Thank you so much.

Hey guys, sorry to bump the thread. Just thought I'd express my love for this awesome game. I finished it last night, and it totally caught me off guard. I only played the first Ratchet, and years after its release, so I wasn't all that impressed. But man, ToD was one of the most fun gameplay experiences I've possibly ever had. It's just so much fun to experiment with the myriad of weapons you're given, and attempting to upgrade them all. The camera and platforming sections are perfect, quite possibly the first time I've played a platformer without being killed by the camera. And like everyone has said, the dialogue is brilliant. Percival and Captain Quark are quite possibly two of the funniest characters in videogame history.

I think I'd go as far as saying I preferred it to Mario Galaxy, but then again, I'm somewhat of a graphics whore. The only game that tops ToD for GOTY for me is Bioshock, and possibly Uncharted, but I'm only four hours in with the latter. Anyways, if you own a PS3, and don't own this game, you're part of the problem.

The only problem I can think of that was mention by a few others was the lack of "oomph" at some moments, as when you find a new item. The little sound effect and animation that accompany them just feel so... empty. But that's such a minor complaint. I suppose the game gets a little too easy in the middle, but hey, that's what challenge mode is for.

Yep, this was first of the series and it caught me off guard as well. I was never going to buy it (any time soon at least) but I got it as a gift. The writing and characters are spectacular and has some of the funniest moments ever in a game. Especially the pirates! And the graphics.. going or flying through some levels is a sight you can't miss.

Got this game when I bought the system in November. Just now finished it. It was well worth it. I would give this game a 90-95 overall. The one thing I really like about this game besides just pure fun is the length of the game compared to other games of this generation. It really does have some nice length to it. So far this and Uncharted are all I have bought for the PS3, but imo both are must haves. The other game at this point in time I need to give a shot is Resistance. I'm sure I would enjoy it as well.

Well, downloaded the demo of this today when I bought my PS3, and holy shit it looks fuckgin amazing. Classic Ratchet and Clank gameplay with CG level visuals. I even had my wife look at the game while I was playing and she thought it could pass for a CG movie. The only crappy thing about the demo is no inverted aiming.

Well there goes 2 games I gotta buy tomorrow. Uncharted and Tools of Destruction.

Finished the game yesterday.

I give it an 8 out of 10.

High points:

- Graphics! Sometimes they were really stunning!

- Weapons! I wanted to level them all up, just to see how they differed. They were all fun to use too.

- Enemy designs. They were not only extremely beautiful, but there were so many varieties of enemies. And certain weapons were ideal for certain foes, which was nice.

- Tons of variety in the environments. I really liked the Lombax homeworld.

- A few of the music tracks were really awesome, but I wish they had been a little more in the foreground.

- Minigames were pretty fun in general (the gel thing was totally underused).

Things I wish could have been worked on more:

- Sometimes the art style was just garish and a bit ugly. I disliked the extremely green, ugly world where you did the arena fights. Some worlds looked a little drab and lacked 'pop', for lack of a better word. Also enemies would sometimes blend into the background on the darker worlds. I think that in some cases, the color design could have been tweaked so that enemies stood out more.

- I'm not sure if it was the lack of rumble, or just an animation issue, but sometimes it was hard to tell exactly when I was getting hit, or how much damage I took. Sometimes a simple hit could take off a ton of life, but because the lack of feedback, I couldn't really gauge how hurt I was.

- They tease you with that awesome world that you can fly around in freely, and it's the ONLY ONE where you have any freedom!?!?! Lame. I wish that there was more freedom with some of the cool devices you got. The gyro-cycle and the wings were awesome, but only in a few limited cases could you really drive them around freely. A bit of wasted potential. Also wasted potential in the gel shooter. I also thought that that having to pull out your grappling hook was annoying, but I can't think of a way around it with the current design.

- I loved the writing, but sometimes in the midst of battle the radio chatter from friends and/or enemies got lost in the background, and there were no subtitles. I think a video screen of the character talking on your hud for a brief moment could have worked better. Also, I would have loved it if other characters hacked that screen and taunted you, like Tachyon. I loved the video consoles spread out in some of the worlds with Tachyon on them, but I'd have to wait around to really understand what he's saying. Also, sometimes your weapon computer chatter would overlay over other chatter, and stuff just got completely haywired.

- Lack of polish in cutscenes. Sometimes the cutscenes would end rather abruptly, or there would be inconsistancies between the cutscene content and the game content. I feel like some of the scenes were shortened due to time, because some transitions felt very botched. For example,
you fight that boss in the black hole, and after you beat him, it never tells you how to get out... or in one of the final levels, you fly in completely alone, and your friend says she and the robots will follow you later, but they inexplicably appear by your side at the beginning of the HALO jump. The ending sequence lacked a big explosion when Ratchet used the dimensionator, it just faded to white, which I thought looked dumb. Also the ending in general was a bit dumb, and very anticlimatic.
. I think that the comedy in the cutscenes was good but some of the timing was really off.

- I wish that when you opened the weapon buying menu(s), it was an overlay over the screen and didn't stop the music. It was kind of a buzz kill suddenly hitting a silent screen.

Ummmmmm that's all I can think of right now.

Overall I really enjoyed the game, but the issues I mentioned really bugged me throughout the game. Resistance also suffered from the 'lack of polish in cutscenes' issue. I think that having a cohesive, easy to follow narrative is very important, and overall many of Ratchet's cutscenes and story segments felt rushed and/or incomplete, and Resistance's cutscenes had Hale jumping all over the place with no sense of what went on in between battles, so we never got to know his character. Ratchet (and Clank) as characters were really fleshed out, but I barely got to know the Apogee girl...her robots had some really good lines, though.

Flame on.

Well so far I'm at the
Kreeli Comet
, and I'm burned out. The game looks phenomenal, and actually has a somewhat focused story, but after TOD, they need to give Ratchet and Clank a break. I feel like I'm playing now just to complete the story, and not giving a shit about the game itself. I feel like I'm playing a amazing looking version of Going Commando. The tilt-motion parts are cool, but other than that it feels like the same ol Ratchet and Clank. To some that may be good, but I've already played the shit out of all 4 on the PS2, and Size Matters. I was going back and forth between this and Uncharted, and I feel like I made the wrong choice.

Give it more time. In later levels, the game picks up a lot from a gameplay perspective with some tougher enemies you haven't seen yet.

Uncharted is a better game, (It's my GOTY, after all) but I still found R&C very satisfying.

Well, he's more than halfway through the game, and having played the game five times (TOD), each time trying my hardest to enjoy it more than the last (considering how shocked I was that this was the first Ratchet and Clank game I had trouble enjoying), things aren't going to get that much better.

The game picks up -- there's no doubt about that -- but the extent to which the pace is expedited may not be enough for some.

You struggle to enjoy it but have played five times?

Curious.

just got it on the weekend...its my 1st ratchet game ive ever played...

gotta say, im not enjoying it at all. I love platformers and stuff but there are a few broken aspects of the game i cant get passed.

The character movement dosent seem to follow exactly wot im doing on the pad, the camera angles are terrible, bordering on just unplayable in some parts...and wots with all the invisible walls everywhere?

looks like its my 1st and last ratchet experience.

back to galaxy...sigh...

I'm just as curious. I have mild OCD, I swear. :D

I loved this series since I first set eyes on it at my local Best Buy back in 2002 and it's the reason I purchased my Playstation 2. It's also the reason I purchased my PS3...but playing through it the first time, I was not as satisfied as I hoped to be. It's not a bad game, James, it's very enjoyable for that matter (hence the five times I played through it), but it's not as enjoyable as the first three titles. Thus, thinking I may have been under some academic stress the first time through, I played through it again to see if it was me. As I would later discover, it wasn't.

This was the first Ratchet game I didn't love, but still enjoyed. I played it five times because it's one of the few games I have on the PS3 and there's not much else out there that lasts as long. And, having played it five times, I have pin-pointed the exact reasons for its less exciting nature. Here they are, presented in detail:

1. In the previous Ratchet games (or at least the 3rd one; I haven't played GC in years), when you fired your projectile weapon at an enemy, it would stagger: the enemy would be kicked back when it came in contact with the projectile. This happens in ToD, but less so than the previous Ratchets.

2. Enemies that were of the "robotic" nature would shed armor when shot. This was elicit a subtle but imperative feeling of satisfaction within the player. It was almost as though I (the player) was being acknowledged immediately for my input of the 'O' button. The loss of armor would soon be accompanied by...

3. Post-death effects for enemies (i.e. explosions) were sensationalized spectacles in Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal. Not only was my impression of the circle button met with the aforementioned firework-show, but it was followed by a calculated dispersion of debris, flying in multiple directions (with small trails of fire, if I may add). And when it was an organic enemy, I was presented with not only a small kick-back, but also...

4. Sound. The noise given off by the collision of ammunition with the surface of an enemy was perfect. If I fired my machine-gun-type weapon, for instance, with each beam I heard significant sound of crumbling metal or an equally loud eccentric cry. Again, I was being acknowledged almost eagerly by the likes of the game. To my trivial input was returned glorious output.

5. The weapons. I don't how else to explain this one except for the fact that the more conventional weapons (i.e. shotgun) were empowering. I gave UYA a test-run to help realize what it was that ToD was missing and within seconds, I found one-sixth(:D) of the answer: the weapon design and functionality. Fire the shockblaster in UYA and then the Shard Reaper in ToD. Words are not necesary to describe the disparity.

6. Challenge. Insomniac attempted to return the series back to its roots and it did so competently... in most respects. While injecting some classic original Ratchet and Clank moments in Tools of Destruction, you also managed to revive one of the original title's grievances. This was challenge. Now, don't misunderstand, the original was certainly challenging in the latter half but the problem is found in that statement itself -- it was only the latter half (and boy was it challenging). Similar to the original, Tools is a "walk in the park" until a bit more than halfway through. To some extent, I can empathize with you on the execution of this development decision. In order to enhance the game's accessibility, Insomniac needed to make sure difficulty wasn't a barrier-to-entry that would inhibit or in some cases prohibit enjoyment of the game for the casual crowd. This is understandable but I wish the team would have done something to appease the more devoted crowd of gamers as well(most of which are already pleased, as one can infer from this thread alone).

I trust you will read this because I have poured a good deal of my life into this game only because of the impression its predecessors left on me. I don't normally play games more than once but I felt it was my duty to understand exactly why I couldn't enjoy this game as much as previous installments.

cause galaxy has the uber perfect camera system.

beat this a couple days ago finally (sorry, LTTP big time)

overall I give it an 8/10

Pros:

- a wonderful presentation/world

- It took 3 games, but I think the series has finally hit its stride in regards to it's Art

- CONTROLS ARE OMFG PERFECT! ....seriously, Insomniac really knows how to properly tweak those analogs ....just remeber to play Lock-strafe!

- The game is a fucking techinical marvel and enough kudos cannot be given Insomniac

- You can play it in front of your kids! (which is what I did the majority of the time :D )

Cons:

- Wish the soundtrack was entirely orchestral

- Gameplay formula hasn't progressed all that much from previous entries (and I've only played 2 of them)

Still a great game and an absolute most own....can't wait for the next one! :D

Beat it tonight. Fun game overall, but the series could be much more. Some things feel too used from prior games.

My bigeest complaints are the game is VERY glitchy (enemies moving underground, items floating in mid air, screen turned black during the final boss, etc,) and the pirate dancing mini game got old after the tenth time.

Best game on the PS3? No, Uncharted is still superior. Good effort? Yes.

Now I need to try Resistance and see how it compares.

I didn't find that Tools ever got challenging, unless you count fighting the Flying levels without an invert Y axis. By the time you got to the second half of the game, you had enough maxed-out weapons and easy access to ammo (and health recharges!) that you could take out most enemies without any difficulty at all.

I'm going to go ahead and agree that this was one of the best surprises of 2007.

I beat it in like 2 epic sessions, and then started replaying it immediately to get the awesome looking armor.

This game deserves more love.

One thing: I hope the story is fleshed out in the sequel. I expected more story in similitude with Jack series, but I found it pretty sparse. Captain quark was great though...best character in the game

This topic sure did die down :(

Well I just got this and I'm loving the humor so far. From the radar categorizing clank as a toaster to the cryo-sleep punch :lol

My first ratchet game so hopefully i like it :)

just finished the game, and overall am really impressed. I didn't care for the game that much for the first 2-3 hours, but once the weapons get better the game becomes addicting almost RPG like. I hope this isn't the last Ratchet we see on the PS3 because this game is really solid, but considering the shitty sales and lack of legs so far I wonder what will become of this franchise?

This game is insane..

The graphics, the use of sixaxis, the weapons and leveling of the weapons, the levels i love it all.

Falling in love with this game so fast.

ok is there anyway to get the japanese remix of courtney Gears's song on US PS3 ?

so Do you believe in Insomniac now ?

I think the weapons are the worst part of the game. There are just too many (not enough game to really appreciate them all and there is no sense of achievement getting them) and some are too overpowered (no need for bosses, if a single weapon kills them all without any hassle).

But wow at the use of the Sixaxxis. Before playing the game I decided it is useless, but this game uses it exactly the ways I would have used it if I would design a PS3 game.

wow i completely disagree with everything you just said.

I enjoyed much more the game on my 3rd playthrough without upgrading the weapons, they're so powerful that even the hard mode is a piece of cake, this and Clank's so-so levels are my only concerns with an otherwise superb game.

Maybe you should play a Mario game to see how "less is more". But probably it wont change anything.

What about the Sixaxxis, did you think it works great in all other games and R&C uses it the worst way you can imagine?

I found the Clank levels quite enjoyable, not in the way that they would support a whole game, but it was a nice diversion.

easy mate it wasnt a dig against you, i dont get on with the sixaxis at all, within minutes on every game i switch it off if possible. R+C is all about the weapons there can never be too much although a couple of extra planets* to use them on would have been appreciated.

ive never actually played a mario game so i cant judge in comparison to that.

*i was hoping for some in the form of dlc.

No offense taken, I found it just strange to completely disagree with everything.

I understand that R&C is about the weapons and it is not like I dislike the weapons themselves. But wouldnt it be nice if you have to really earn them (like in the Metroid games), if at least the bosses (if not invulnerable) would adapt to them so you couldnt just kill them all easily with the same weapon? Wouldnt it be nice if there were enemies for all the weapons, so there is an incentive to use them? That would give me the feeling they were introduced for gameplay reasons, not just for showing off more nice effects.

Dont get me wrong, I know most have their strengths and weaknesses, but half the weapons/gadgets and double the levels would have made it a better game. I love to have gadgets, but it feels strange if some of them are used only one time (like that strange spherowheel or whatever, it felt like I played the introduction level for it and then waited for the real levels with at least a little challenge, but they never came).

well il agree with double the levels anyway, that would have spread the weapons and gadget out better giving a chance to feel like you have got the use out of each.

there arent that many weapons in the game when you think about it, 14+1 bonus, each of them having two different systems of levelling up in a game made of short levels doesnt give you much of a chance to get on top of them. its the opposite problem of half life 2 for me, too few already dull weapons dragging on for ages.

see, you dont really disagree that much ;)

I love R&C but I think the clank levels need to go or be changed as currently there is no challenge at all. Pretty much enter a area get the robots to do something and move on and rinse and repeat.

Wow, that's the most ludicrous criticism I've ever heared against this game...

Anyway, I think the thing that this game really does wrong is the total lack of challenge. From beginning to end, including bosses, this game is incredibly easy. Not one combat section was difficult. When you regularly upgrade your weapons etc you can walk through this game without any problems. I wish that you really needed to use and combine all the different weapons.

Amen!

btw. was that better/different in the earlier R&C games?

I just got the game a few days ago. I'm really feeling it... very easy, though. I haven't decided if I want do the whole OCD thing with skill points / weapon upgrades / getting every damn secret in the game, etc. Not sure if that'll be fun or work... probably work.
