Rayman Legends: Leaked Wii-U Trailer

So, official figurines sold separately that have a unique footprint for the touch sensitive tablet to detect unlocks stuff, similar to Spyro Skylanders game?

A Rayman Origins sequel on Wii U? Freaking awesome. I'll miss the original art style, but I'm always a sucker for better lighting.

I like the NFC technology, but I hate the way it's being used here. Turning this into Rayman Skylanders is not what I want. I don't want to have to hunt down various toys/statues/whatever. There better be another way to get the extra content. I hope this doesn't become the standard application of NFC with the Wii U.

Extremely disappointing,

Only 1 wii-u controller is a massive let down, basically makes the console unreliable to me. It presents such a huge constraint on developers and keeps them from doing interesting things.

Game looks great though, will get on ps3/360.

Round and round we go...
You forgot that it's 1 wired-controller too. :p

Only if it doesn't impact the performance of the game. Remember the Wii U itself has to process what is being shown the controller. Adding more controllers increases the work load of the system. Which is why if the system does support more then one controller it will be for simple games.
Looks like in this game the tablet view is the same as the TV view (since the game doesn't seem to go split screen, instead limiting the range of distance allowed between the different players), just with a different interface for the touch controls, so it shouldn't require anything meaningfully more out of the system (beyond stressing the streaming chips/bandwidth, which is the one thing they would have to work on or update in order to be able and utilise more tablets at once, as any games could always compromise their graphics etc for more rendered views to be allowed), unlike say, the Battle Mii demo footage where it was a whole different 3D view on the tablet on top of the split screen on the TV. Still, it's one game, and one that has no reason to allow more tablets since even the one is just a gimmick applicable to only part of the gameplay considering the full game is most likely multiplatform and will be available for systems without any tablet at all outside these extra features. Showing one tablet for it only means Ubisoft is using one tablet for this game, nothing more. Perhaps it's also a side effect of being an early game (or even just a concept video at this stage) before Nintendo even have potentially managed to allow another tablet controller like they said they were attempting last time the topic came up after their initial intention of only allowing one. I don't see why developers would be working with features not yet implemented in mind over playing it somewhat safe with what they absolutely know will be in by launch.

Even if they manage to get streaming working on multiple controllers I don't imagine most people will be getting one right away outside friends bringing their own controller on visits or whatever, it'll probably be a bit more expensive than standard controllers while pretty much everyone already has Wiimotes for local multiplayer to be enabled enough to not worry about buying more stuff, at least before some game with an amazing concept that absolutely requires two of these controllers comes up (which might be a while, don't forget, the touch functions used on a tablet controller could even be replicated on the HDTV for a player using the Wiimote pointer, especially since it's single touch, allowing similar gameplay for two - or more - players with only one tablet - I mean, that platform moving function wasn't very different to similar pointer functions in NyxQuest and Lost Winds).

First I have to say there is no evidence that the console itself only permits one pad per controller, merely that it is the case for this particular game. With that said, just to focus on the bolding... so having a functionality the other systems will not have (and don't give me "Vita," a system that relies on you buying a $250 controller is not an alternative to built in) even if it DOES end up being 1 pad per only will not allow interesting things at all? Really? Think things through a bit better next time.

You know what they say about assumptions right?

Well, doesn't this confirm there's only going to be 1 controller usable? I guess it doesn't, so I'll wait to find out for sure. But not being able to properly co-op on the wii-u is disappointing to me.

I have dreams of co-op fatal frame and such, would be so amazing. I think it'll be very hard for developers to design multi-player games that are not limited to the "commander subordinate" model that uses 1 wii-u controller.

I don't know about this. Looks kind of meh imo. :/

Just kidding! :D

This looks absolutely fantastic! Ubisoft gets what the platformng genre as been missing for so many years. 2D and Fun!
I just hope that it is a real game and not just a concept video that it says on Eurogamer. The Skylanders thing will make this, AND it's figures, sell like hot cakes. And I bet this won't be the only game doing this... Prepare to empty some shelf space for all the WiiU figures you WILL buy. ;)

It's an internal video not indicative of the final game or of wii I hardware. Ubi has officially said that themself.

I didn't say "At all" I said interesting things. 1 pad, without question, limits developers in designing games severely and is a massive oversight by Nintendo. No matter how much you love them, no reasonable human being can state that restricting the system to only one pad screen is anything other than a disappointment, because anything you could do restricted to one you can still do without that restriction.

The primary innovative input mechanic for this new console is restricted to only one person at a time, and it has a huge hamper on what developers will do in multi-player games. Of course, having 1 still brings more than other consoles or the wii, but having only one is a limit because of what could be done with more than one.

It's just speculation, but did they not announce 1 controller last year? It made the console extremely undesirable and a lot of people were turned off by the Wii-U's bad design choice and I was hoping it would be changed before this E3.

I made the assumption that this trailer showcased that they did indeed not change the controller setup. Which may have been incorrect.

Again, not saying it wont bring interesting ideas, but it limits them without question and I don't think anyone would prefer only one. I'm waiting for E3, but the thoughts of what could be done with 4 pad screens makes me too excited to not be let down.

This is something you and I are just going to have to get used to. Oddly enough, I don't often see too many people bitching about the virtual death of local multiplayer outside of Nintendo platforms, but suddenly it's a concern and something developers were obviously aching to do all along. They just couldn't before... Because it requires a touchscreen or something... Not sure.

Hope that one Upad in the video doesn't mean Wii U can only support one (would even be lame if Rayman Legends can only support one). Scanning stuff in to the game was 'meh'. Same thing can be done with Kinect. I absolutely hate the tablet controller.

The added shading on the characters helps make them look not as flat and integrates them into the scenery much more seamlessly and natural, that's a really good change and something that's been bothering me about Origins for a while now.

so since Ubisoft announced that marcel is working on this, i assume beyond good and evil 2 is a second afterthought.... :(

when i talked to him about it last year, he winced and said it would be a while. i think they're still working on it, but it's probably a small team and taking longer to make than a 2d title.

work on origins probably transitioned pretty rapidly into legends.

HORY SHIT!!!

Love the use of the Back to the Future music

And putting characterse on the Wii-U controller screen makes them specially appear in game and do weird actions?

SIGN ME UP!!

See it this way. Remember how with the "online jump" many developers started focusing on online and therefore removing local multiplayer, to avoid split-screen, precisely because rendering 2..3..4 screens was too taxing for their engines? (or just because they thought it would be ignored? :p)

Same thing. :p
The Wii U controller is not just a screen streaming an image, but also processing each thing individually. So, you'll see games using more than one tablet, from developers willing to work enough for it (and probably make a few sacrifices too in the visuals department).

At last year's E3 they said that it was only 1 tablet per unit, but were working on improving things. Since then, it has been hinted that that it is possible for more than 1, but no details on how many.

Heck, Nintendo showed this around last year (before the hints about the update):

So, while you might've imagined 4 people with 4 tablets, back then they didn't promised or even mentioned/hinted at it. Come E3 2012 any update about it should be unexpected rather than expected. :p

What they announced last year was at the time 1 pad was the standard but they believed 2 was technically possible. I think 4 is probably unrealistic (I think they said it would be too resource intensive or something) but I'd be very surprised if they didn't have the option for 2 pads for most games. It's possible that the capability to do that wasn't in the dev kits at the time the trailer was made for example, we know they're constantly tweaking those abilities as it is.

I think you misunderstand me. I'm ok if it DOES happen to only allow 1 pad per system in it's final form, I just think that's unlikely, a game like Madden as the classic example practically DEMANDS 2 U Pads. Nintendo has already said they believe it's possible to get 2 pads working, it's just a matter of them actually doing it (and that 2 pads wouldn't be too resource intensive if they do it.) I understand that people want to take this video and project it to mean anything and everything but my only specific point in the post was that it neither proves or disproves how many U Pads per system is possible.

Hope that one Upad in the video doesn't mean Wii U can only support one (would even be lame if Rayman Legends can only support one). Scanning stuff in to the game was 'meh'. Same thing can be done with Kinect. I absolutely hate the tablet controller.

You know, I've never heard a good argument for "hate the tablet controller." It has all the functionality of a more traditional controller PLUS a touch screen. When did gamers come to hate new options?

Wow, this looks really great. I know it's just a concept trailer, but I love how they kept it the same style as Origins. Heck, you can even hear the Origins theme tune mixed in there near the start. I'm not the biggest fan of the Wii U figurine thing, but if it's purely optional then it's of no concern to me. The art looks lovely, hopefully it's everything I want from a sequel. Bigger and better!

If the game is 1080p native (I think the first game was), I may want to get this on the Wii-U instead of waiting for the PC version like I did with Origins.

I may not buy (many) figures, but the tablet controls looked like they could be cool for local co-op.

Love the new look too, I was really afraid when I heard those rumors about it being 2.5D, but this still looks great! Good job Ubi, didn't think you had it in you.

It uses slider pads, doesn't use triggers (which I know some don't care, but I love them for shooters), has a terrible shape for prolonged use. Not for me. The screen, for more options as you put it, could have easily been attached to the top or bottom of a more traditional controller. They even could have made it detachable for those that didn't want to use it. Now, that's options.

Have you held and played with the controller?

That looks fantastic! I had no idea the Wii U pad could work like a Skylanders portal. Talk about a new money sink. I'll probably double-dip on this for the PS3-Vita compatibility, too, whatever that may be.

The main game seems to be controllable by Wii-motes, I wonder if they can also use the Classic Controller too

I suspect Class Controllers will get a big push with the Wii U, since they're functionally so similar to Upads. Would surprise me if most games weren't CC compatible in some way.

This video is said to be internally developed trailer not meant for public viewing, and is not a finished product

What if those direct video grabs are actually from the 360/ps3 version, except for the obvious shots of the Wii-U controller? :P :P :P

Well I guess this is in my top 5 most anticipated releases now.

I wasn't aware that Rayman Origins could be put to shame graphically speaking.

The issue with multiple pads isn't purely technical. Pretty sure WiiU can easily handle 2; more than that would be pushing it. The real concern for Nintendo is that they think the pads are to expensive to retail on their own.

Great news! I loved Rayman Origins., so this is very exciting. Hopefully the asymmetric gameplay will expand beyond moving a few platforms. The potential is off the charts.

Amazing. But some parts were grossly unnecessary. I mean, I know they make his games, but did Shaun White really need to be in the trailer?

It's not entirely clear from the video, but it appears that the U Pad can be used as a controller, too. When the man and woman are playing together, two characters are being controlled on-screen, so assuming that's not a single-player game with an AI partner, then the pad can be used either supplementary or a stand-alone controller.

Oh great. Next gen games will require hunting down action figures at Walmart and a bunch of plastic crap to waste space in order to access content. Looks like we'll be longing for the old days of digital unlock keys pretty soon.

Yep. The more options the merrier. Hope Treyarch goes all out with Black Ops 2 on Wii U. Like they did on the Wii games...well..assuming Black Ops 2 is released this year...and by Treyarch. :p
