Rayman's Ancel: 'I Don't Really Enjoy Playing Mario Games'

Which ones? They all play differently. Super Mario World is probably the heaviest game while SMB1 and SMB3 are the lightest.
The 2D have a veeeeery similar weight. Yoshi obviously has a different one, though. But if you swift away too much in weight, or sacrfice the run button for example, you would kill the mario experince. Miyamoto f'cking nailed it with SMB1 - it's that brilliant.

No, it's not both games have bubbles. It's both games have the exact same multiplayer mechanic to revive each other.

There's nothing wrong with copying that, but there's something wrong with not owning up to it.

Seriously?Bursting bubbles/items to get your partner back is something that has always existed. It's not something limited to Mario or something.
Might as well say that Ancel copied Yoshi's Island because of the Baby Mario bubbles.

It's in DKC too, except with barrels instead.

This interview is almost exactly like that gamekult one (thread on it here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=450829)

He brings up LittleBigPlanet as another platformer he couldn't get into because of the controls. He's not singling out Mario. It's just his preference. He mentions that he was into Another World and Heart of Darkness, and while he says it's for the narrative, both those games have more digital and exact movement compared to the likes of LBP or Mario.

I don't fault the guy for not liking Mario games. I know a lot of people who feel the same.

Me as well. The controls just feel a bit janky and loose, I'd qualify the feedback you get from your actions as poor. Maybe Ancel could learn a thing or two by playing Mario games.
This is how I felt as well. Artistically, it's a marvel to look at, but it ultimately felt unsatisfying for me to play.

The controls definitely aren't as good as they could be but the level of creativity on display still puts it WELL beyond stuff like NSMB (which felt generic to the point that it could have been a Chinese knock-off). I really enjoy the pacing of Rayman Origins, though. It's very fast and, once you've learned the ropes, can be a joy to blast through. Rayman 1 was easier to control, however.

I really dislike the physics in Rayman games. I guess this helps explain why they are the way they are.

This. Was pretty set on buying Origins until I played the demo. Just felt off. Couldn't get any secrets that involved making tricky jumps to save my life. Still played through the whole demo and enjoyed it but it made me decide to not buy the game.

Are DKC and YI simultaneous 4-player platformers with a clever mechanic to revive your partner the instant they die? No. I'm sorry but you'd have to be blind to not see the influence, and a hypocrite to not own up to it.

I love Another World, but I would never in a million years qualify it as having exact movement. Heart of Darkness also has extremely dodgy controls.

Though in the full quote he mostly says that he doesn't like the games because of the controls..and because he can't slap enemies, glide after jumping, etc. He recognizes what Mario games has done, etc. so is not like he was saying "I don't like Mario because it sucks" or "the games are no longer aimed at me". Same way that on the same interview the mentions Miyamoto not liking Beyond Good and Evil's camera.

To be fair, NSMB has the worst "physics" in any Mario game so far. What he said about inertia and slipping being annoying is spot on.

Right on.

I'd imagine Ancel would have a different opinion if he went back to Super Mario World again. The controls there are about as perfect as you can get and worlds better than either NSMB title.

I don't remember Rayman 2 and 3 having strong storylines. I always played for the platforming me.
Ancel had nothing to do with Rayman 3, but Rayman 2 had a decent narrative. Beyond Good & Evil was much better in that regard, though. Still, not the best reason to play a platformer. His games DO have great atmosphere, though, and I'm thrilled that those same games are always filled with incredible music work. Many of Nintendo's more recent works have been filled with incidental music that detracts from the experience (aside from the Orchestral pieces created for Galaxy and Skyward Sword). Even Retro dropped the ball with DKCR.

Maybe one day Ancel will make a game that will be worth playing. Until then, he shouldn't speak about works of genius.

Rayman is the most creatively bankrupt character in video game history. Looks like he should be a mascot for one of the horrible summer olympic games.

Beyond Good & Evil is typical GAF overhyped drivel. The guy essentially made a game that starred his booty call (Jade Raymond) and a slapped on farm animal.

But I guess French people are naturally jealous, so it makes sense.

Not sure if bad troll or just butthurt.

thats all opinion, just as his quote is

Eh, he's not my favorite design but I'd say that Sonic, Bubsy, Crash or any number of the "animals with attitude" characters would easily outclass Rayman as far as being creatively bankrupt.

It's really not GAF hype, the game is loved by a lot of people. I'll admit that its fans (myself included) probably talk the game up more than it should, but there's a reason for that, it's a game that is really one of kind that got lost in the shuffle of giant blockbusters (and Ubisoft incompetence) and never really had its fair chance. It's the definition of cult classic and as such, the people that love, REALLY love it.

Physics in Rayman 1 could get funky some moments when running but in general I absolutely loved how the game handled, especially in band world. Sliding in the game is perfect!

He just needed to take a bigger look at the original Rayman when designing Origins IMO

I hope that's a joke (it has to be). If not, I wouldn't even know how to respond to such ignorance. :P

I kind of agree about Beyond Good & Evil. I tracked down a GameCube copy awhile back and yeah it was "cool" but the typical overhype of epic disappointment... At least Rayman has decent humor. Other than that, forgettable. Ancel gets too much hype when most of his shit is more of King Kong than Rayman 2.

Did a massive rolleyes on seeing this thread... its an old quote and clearly taken out of context here.

He name checks Zelda in a positive sense and he even states why he doesn't play Mario - due to the slippery momentum-based physics etc. It wasn't a diss at all the way the selective posting and thread title implies... It's clear he still has a lot of respect for the games. The thread title is rubbish.

Beyond Good and Evil is the worst game I've played on my PS2. And I've played Orphen: Scion of Sorcery, so that's saying something. Ancel is at his best when he ignores narrative and focuses more on the actual game design, like with Rayman.

Congratulations, you made the worst post in the thread.

I tried the Rayman Origins demo, but the controls seemed off to me. Like I wasn't in total control. I found interesting that most people were praising the graphics before the gameplay.
that explains the kinda of games popular on GAF

I'll still get it when it's $20 or so.

Well, Mario 3 is a play after all...

In this thread butthurt nintendo fans attack person for not liking mario.

Seriously though, I don't see the big deal. I don't really like mario either, but I respect what mario has done for gaming.

Wait, the inertia? The Mario series is the pinnacle of inertia, control, and jumping physics. This man is factually wrong by disliking the inertia.
The series? No, this applies to SOME Mario games, but certainly not the series as a whole. NSMB, for instance, feels like shit to me.

There is something slightly off to me about the controls in Rayman, I'm having trouble putting my finger on it though, I will say that the aerial attacks disrupt flow in a rather floaty way. But on the whole I wouldn't say they are bad at all.
On the plus side the underwater controls are top notch stuff, more platformers should take a look at how Rayman deals with water control.

I find this weird cause Rayman Origins borrows some elements from NSMB in terms of co-op gameplay design and the whole bubble player thing. I guess the designers of the game are bigger fans than Ancel is.

I gotta agree on both counts. The only complaint I have with the controls in Rayman Origins is attacking midair disrupts my flow and makes perfecting some sequences more frustrating than it needs to be.
The swimming is really good, reminds me of how Jazz Jackrabbit 2 handled its swimming controls but better.

Also weird how the Gamasutra link says all the time "told to Gamasutra" as it was an exclusive interview, when it wasn't. Though, maybe there was a deal between them and Gamekult, or maybe they're from the same owner..so I don't know.
Yea, what's up with this Gamasutra?

Nvm, looks like the journalist has some deal going with both publications.

I've really tried to like Mario games, really really tried. Don't enjoy playing them with the exception of Galaxy, which was pretty enjoyable, but never got around finishing it, and never played Galaxy 2.

Jeez at the people getting worked up about it, Ancel's just telling what he feels about the game in a respectful manner, nothing personal.

I feel like most people just read the thread title, promptly decide this jealous ass french motherfucker needs to be taken down a few pegs, and just go straight to posting.
The tone in the interview is not at all whats implied by the title
