Real Talk: The status of Suikoden VI

Okay, it's been over 2 years since Suikoden V was released to the masses and we still haven't heard a single thing about Suikoden VI. What do you guys think is going on with this franchise? Think Konami is still trying to decide which platform they're gonna develop it on? Think Konami has already started developing it, or do you think that Konami has just totally abandoned this franchise? I mean, the series makes them money, right? It's not like Suikoden V was a colossal failure that lost them money, and as far as I know, it was pretty well received by both fans and critics.

I don't know, it's just frustrating to see my favorite RPG franchise just disappear into nothingness like this without a good reason. Konami isn't in financial trouble, the last game didn't bomb, so what's the freakin' deal? A part of me is trying to convince myself that it's gonna be announced this TGS, as with MGS4's release, Konami suddenly has 100 developers going back to their respective teams. So maybe now that they've got that out of way, Suikoden VI will actually stop being a concept inside someones head and actually head into full production. Really, at this point I'll take ANYTHING. DS/PSP/Wii? As much as I'd prefer the series to be on the X360/PS3, I'll still be there on the first day.

Stop angering me, konami. Announce something. ;_;

I would even take a DS title, just make a new one damnit! And have Tir back hell make him a central character to the plot. And set it in the western continent leaving Harmonia for the seventh title.

I've talked about this a couple times. BoF 6 and Suikoden 6 are the two games I want the most.

I thought I had heard from someone on here that Suikoden 6 was coming out but I never really looked into it.

Honestly? I dont mind waiting until the team is ready to give us an amazing console RPG with a plot as good as Vs.

Yes, Suiko was never about the graphics, but I hope to God we get SuikoVI as an awesome new console RPG in the next few years.

There were rumours... Wii and PSP related, I believe.

I don't really take them with a grain of salt...

Hmmm, perhaps Konami is lurking in the shadows, waiting to see how PS3 and Xbox 360 fare in JRPG sales department? Or perhaps they are already working on Suikoden VI. For Wii. Or DS.

Whatever platform it is for, I hope they keep the random battles fast like the previous iterations. Suikoden has always been more about story than grinding.

Possibilities:

-Worst case scenario, series was canned

-Delayed development due to focus on Metal Gear Solid 4

-Restarted from scratch due to sub-par product

-Internal staff conflict

-Yoshitaka Muruyama has returned and is revamping everything! :D

-Playstation 3 + small development team = headaches
Probably the most likely one since the staff members have already expressed interest in developing for PS3. I believe that Kawano stated that she wanted to "do interesting things with wind..."

Only familiar jRPG franchise to be released this gen so far is Disgaea, and that did just fine in Japan. And I'm just gonna assume something without looking shit up, but I'm pretty confident that Suikoden shits all over Disgaea in sales.

He's the original director, right? I hope that is the case, as the series, while consistently fun and worth playing, has kind of stagnated with regards to gameplay mechanics and interface. Taking an extra year to re-launch the series (While keeping the same basic concept) would be worth the time.

I also feel that the musical charm of the game peaked in Suikoden II. None of the PS2 Suikoden games had any memorable tracks.

He created the series. He left Konami sometime towards the end of Suikoden III's development cycle to found Blue Moon Studios. I wonder where he got that name from...

Their first effort though, Tsukiyo ni Saraba, was a total disaster from what I understand. Otherwise, I don't know what he's been working on. Anyone with skill in that beloved language care to shed some light?

I'd prefer Suiko VI on a next-gen console. With a night and day system. With an interactive fort/castle/base/HQ. With multiple characters to recruit for each Star. Without crappy characters that nobody is going to use, make every character worthwhile. Multiple ways of recruiting each Star. Real-time strategy like Rome: Total War for war battles. Better graphics. Better soundtrack. With a non-mute main character.

I could go on, but the Suiko series needs to improve in a lot... a lot of ways. V really let me down.

V was the one you were disappointed with?? That game was a step in the right direction after the abysmal IV.

I agree with a nearly everything you said in that first paragraph, spot on.

Though I really loved V. V was actually my favorite :P (Very very very disappointing graphics-wise though.)

I agree. I can't see how anyone that likes the series can dislike 5.

I still say I like the idea of the Suikoden series going portable in the future.
I don't. But I'd deal with it if it means we get another Suikoden. As long as it's not full 3D on DS.

There is little to no chance that Konami intends on letting the Suikoden series die. Honestly, it's less plausible than most of the talk that goes on in system-war port discussions.

They've bugged Tabris so they can find out what will destroy his already damaged psyche and then design it with that system in mind.

They should ditch the level up system and make it all about skills. Yeah, I really liked using skills on SuikoIII it almost made me look V in a diferent prespective.

Suikoden VI for the Wii would make me buy a Wii, but it may be too hardcore for the Wii audience. I'll take a 360 version.

I hear they're still trying to incorporate MGS characters into the 108 stars in order to widen the sales of the franchise.

Actually they're pretty close these days. D2 sold a little less than what SV did, but was close.

Not much it seems. After Tsukiyo ni Saraba he made the Tensho Gakuen Gekko(u)roku PS2 scenario. The game itself is part of the Tokyo Majin universe (Rough TL of title~ Reincarnation [Buddhist variant] Academy: Moonlight Record)

pa.108382.2.jpg

then he worked on the manga for the series (Tensho Gakuen Gekkoroku: Sakugetsu no shou [Reincarnation Academy: Moonlight Record: Chapter of the New Moon] published in Dengeki's Maoh
then the story for the trading cards of same series.
and finally the scenario for the drama cd of same series.

As far as Suikoden VI, I'd rather it not be on the wii since I'm not particularly inclined to buy one but if that is the only venue to keep the series alive I'd grudgingly accept it being an avid fan of the series.

I didn't like V because the story was a lot less dark than previous titles, specifically II and III. I actually liked IV, to be honest. Snowe is one of the best developed characters in jRPGs today.

Much of V feels like I'm meandering around accomplishing nothing, and many of the characters are just dull. I and II are my all-time favorites, because they keep you engaged throughout. V has way too much downtime between big story events, and the graphics are just absolutely terrible.

Hoping it goes back to 2D... the sprite designs and animation in Suikoden 2 were so charming, that's gotta be the best looking 2D RPG ever. The 3D Suikos just look rather cheap and bland in comparison.

I'm not sure what it'd betray if it were placed on the Wii. It'd probably wind up looking much like the PS2 installments of the series, so there wouldn't be any jarring transition.

Besides, even if it were on PS3 or 360, I doubt Konami would give it an extremely high budget.

You clearly aren't a TRUE SUIKODEN FAN* if you don't think it belongs on PS3.

What other way am I supposed to interpret the phrase "Snowe is one of the best developed characters in jRPGs today"? Sure, it may be sarcasm (I hope it is) but you didn't really leave any clues to indicate such. Thus the :lol stands.

If you actually knew what "best developed character" meant you'd realize that I am correct. He changes more than any other Suikoden character and most jRPG characters do.

He seemed like a weaker version than Jowy...

Character development doesn't mean changes... it means explaining everything about the character as in, his thought process and such. Fleshing him out, so to speak.

Huge Suikoden fan in the house! :D Suikoden VI is definitely coming, but when and for what system is another question.

I'm under the assumption that it takes a little while whenever there is a console upgrade (PS1 > PS2 or PS2 > PS3) that there is a bit of a wait for all the third parties to deliver the goods.

Last time, S3, S4, and S5 all came out, one right after the other because there were three separate teams working on them in tandem. Team Ishikawa did S3, Team Kawano did S4, and Team King did S5.

Hopefully this and the trend of localizing and releasing the Suikoden games at the same time as Japan holds true again as well. :D

I thought both Snowe and Jowey were idiots, myself. I'm actually playing Suikoden 1 myself right now, trying to deal with the Flower General, and having a hard time keeping interest. It's odd that so far my favorite Suikoden games go from newest (favorite) to oldest (least favorite), excluding the currently unfinished S1 and Tactics.

Nah, you're actually very, very wrong. Sure, Snowe was one of the better characters of Suikoden IV, but come on, what is that saying??

Suikoden VI? Is there actually anything to talk about yet?
I guess that rumor of it hitting the PSP was bogus?
Pity, IIRC, the other games rumored around then were all true...

Really? Konami didn't even handle IV and V? Hudson, of all companies? Never would have guessed...

Yes they did, they just had technical assistance from Hudson which they had just acquired.
