Battle For Middle Earth 2 is still my favorite.
It doesn't have the deepest gameplay but the setting is still awesome and stuff like the focus on big unit numbers and seeing them flying around when you summon the Balrog or some other creatures is still awesome.

The 2+ hours long multiplayer matches with friends on Minas Tirith are some of my favorite gaming memories

The only problem is that due to licencing issues it's not available digitally.
You'd have to track down a physical copy or just pirate it.

Fully support all the mentions of Battle for Middle Earth II, fantastic game.

Not real time but give Heroes of might and magic 3 a try.

Its turnbased with base building, exploring, resource collection, leveling, skills, combat tactics, items, spells… has it all really, except real time gameplay….

Is warcraft 3 still a thing? Could look into that as well
The advantage of it not being really time is that it's great for local co op.

The problem is that BFME2 is basically impossible to acquire legally these days. Now if anyone wants to pirate it then go ahead, it's not really hurting anyone, but it really needs a Steam release so people can just click on it and buy.

To me Company of Heroes and Warcraft 3 + Frozen Throne are two of the best games ever made, I always go back to them.

World in Conflict is cool too
