Reassessing the Switch's lineup post-spotlight

In terms of first-party it's unbelievably strong right now. It's not just volume, it's the kind of games we're getting and how potentially good many of them could be.
Third-party is considerably less impressive so far, but it has potential to improve if there's some early success for stuff like FIFA, Skyrim and Rocket League.
I doubt we've seen the headlining game for 2018. I think we could go as far as E3 2018 before we know for sure what it is; they could have an Animal Crossing up their sleeve, or something completely different. Pokémon might be holiday 2018 if we're lucky.

Its still not enough to own one now, especially since I dont like how Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is looking, but in year or two when the 3ds stops taking all my money it should be in a really good place. As it stands Mario and ARMS are the only games that are really going to make the wait super painful for me. Everything else is solid but not really super remarkable.

The best first 8 months of a console ever in terms of exclusives and sheer software variety and options to play. Bravo Nintendo. Like a completely different company compared to the Wii U's first couple of years.

With no gameplay I'd make the safer assumption that it'll be 2019. I hope I'm proven wrong though.

Pretty disappointing for me personally, though, I can see the appeal to others. I really wanted Smash, DK, or a mainline Pokemon game this year. Mario Rabbids surprisingly looks good. The lack of VC really hurt my interest in Switch. It looks like that won't be releasing until next year when online goes live, massive letdown. Was hoping for a bigger push from indies as well, so many big indie titles I expected a port for and so far, nothing. 
Hopefully, things kick into high gear in 2018 and I'll hop back on the Switch train with several new titles to get lost in. For the time being, think I'm gonna sell mine and focus on upgrading/playing my gaming PC.

For the time being, think I'm gonna sell mine and focus on upgrading/playing my gaming PC.What Nintendo really needed to achieve for the first year of the platform is to set the tone and prepare the scene for the 2018 and beyond and they'll without a doubt succeed at this task. The biggest issue at the moment is that they're not producing an adequate quantity of Switches to meet the demand and this might continue well into next year.

Yes, because all the 2018 games are known. All 3 of them. Yup.
Decent amount of content coming, and that is without indie titles filled in. Even the Fall/Holiday stuff seems like it spreads out nice enough to have about 2-3 big releases a month at least, including first party stuff.
I was hoping for a few more 3rd party announcements for that part of the year, and it sort of rains on the March soft launch/Holiday true launch theory a bit, even if there will be a good amount of titles by then. One thing that has sort of thrown off that idea for me is that the full online roll out has been delayed until 2018, which is when I thought they'd tie it to more 3rd party support, but we have little info about future support of the console besides some games.
VC announcements are still non-existent. If other "Deluxe" ports are in the works, like rumored, we have no info about them, though it would make sense if they were also spread out like all other releases.
Honestly, I've been pretty happy with the constant roll out of titles on the Switch, which has felt like a stark contrast from the droughts on the Wii U and early Wii/3DS/DS lifecycles. If Nintendo can avoid long droughts and work with 3rd parties to have titles release on a constant basis and slowly become more frequent, that still makes for a good console.

Really solid lineup. I'll be getting ARMS, Somic Mania, Stardew Valley, Splatoon 2, and Mario Odyssey for sure. Maybe Rabbids and Xenoblade as well.

They aren't, my guess is those are early 2018. Yhe big hitters for next year are most likely Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime, Pokemon mainline, along with Animal Crossing, Pikmin, and perhaps Smash.

The amount of first party releases on it are pretty dense and it's better than Wii U or 3DS were at an point in their lives (or any other system first party wise, maybe). But there are still only a handful of Nintendo series I actually like. There are only like 1-2 games every other quarter that interest me this year and it'll probably be the same next year if the third party situation doesn't change. Still holding out for TGS, but there were a few japanese game announcements in the past week that I was surprised weren't making it over to Switch (Code Vein, Dissidia and DBZ). Than there's the fact that capcom isn't interested in bringing MHXX to the west... Not looking good tbh.

It was announced during the Spotlight. It's the next mainline Pokémon game from Game Freak (most likely the Gen 8 games) after Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.

I feel pretty confident that Kirby and Yoshi will be early 2018. I do think they need a bigger game in Q1. Q1 is now pretty important it seems.

That line up would be adequate if I actually was interested in all of those games, which I am not. What now? Would be nice to have more 3rd party support that give me options. I guess that was wishful thinking.

I give it a B-. Nintendo's first party lineup is in my opinion the best they have ever done in the first year of a system. The indie lineup is strong. However the AA/AAA 3rd party support is atrocious. The Gamecube, Wii and Wii U had much better 3rd party support. It's to be expected coming off of the WII U failure. As of right now Nintendo and Indies are more than enough for me in the near future but they need to capitalize on their early buzz and get the big publishers on board. Games like Need for Speed, Madden and Call of Duty need to make it to Switch if the system is going to have broad appeal.

The lineup looks pretty good. Curious what their showcase titles for 2018 will be. I'm guessing Fire Emblem, Smash, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Pokemon, Mario Maker and Retro's new game.

I already have my second game on the way after BOTW (I'm only a quarter of the way through). It's ARMS this Friday. The system is very well used.

ARMS and that Mario/Rabbids crossover game are enough to sell me on the system. I guess what I'm waiting on now is for those hardware issues (Joycon disconnects, dock screen scratching) to be ironed out before getting one. Oh, and the lack of availability is a problem too lol
