this is the type of thread I have been looking for but it seems most of the anime posted I have seen years ago, and I havent watched anime in years... ugh I need me some new mature anime.
This happens to me too. It's hard to find something from the last couple years. I haven't really watched anime since maybe 2006 and the vast majority of suggestions are things I already saw back before then.

Watch Gurren Lagann.

jk

Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are must watches.

EDIT: Oh this thread is months old. lol

Gantz anime is pretty shit. The manga starts off good but becomes shit once the whole bring 7 dragon balls to bring back people alive happens, instead of Dragons Balls it's points. The author also loves to drag things out and introduce stuff out of nowhere almost as if he's pulling things out of he's ass. Vampires!

Going mostly off action here with some notable exceptions:

Monster
Black Lagoon
Hellsing Ultimate
Death Note
12 Kingdoms
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Garden of Sinners
Samurai X - Trust And Betrayal
Bacanno!
Sword Of The Stranger

Would "Future Boy Conan" be a good recommendation? My memory is fuzzy on this show because I watched it when I was a wee lad, but I seem to remember it wasn't juvenile or anything, though maybe a bit lighthearted for what this thread is about.

Well it's definitely not a show aimed at adults, but it's still a good show. It's pretty much what would happen if Ghibli made a TV show.

I'd recommend "Kaiji". Not really action but does have a mature feel to it. Also, I'm watching "Durarara" ATM so that too. Also the reboot of "Fullmetal Alchemist".

I will never understand the love gurren laggan gets here. The animation is neat but the narrative jam packs every dumb anime cliche possible.

Think less of how dumb it is and more the execution. Sure, there was alot of ROWROW FIGHT THE POWA BS flying around, but that's pretty fun to watch. It's mindless, like a Hollywood action movie.

I'll make the obvious recommendation, given my avatar: Death Note. The show is a little too farfetched an overthought at times, but it's great nonetheless. It has the best soundtrack I've heard in anime.

FYI OP, a lot of people were unhappy with Samurai Champloo. I wouldn't give it high priority on your watch list.

WTF? No. Not even.

Samurai Champloo is great. Good characters and action. Black Lagoon is great too, specifically the Roberta (there's the initial arc about her then another one that was made into an OVA) and Yakuza arcs.

Somebody should have told me Shigurui was guro-tesque before I watched an episode.

With a stronger stomach I might go back to it someday.
It never really goes anywhere. It's just samurai dudes with weird hair grimacing at each other while the camera flashes CAT scans of their anatomy at you.

Oh and the guro gets really bad toward the end. You know Whitebeard from One Piece? Yeah it's kind of like that.

Yeah, it's over the top, but those are usually the best things at being inspiring. Cliche or not, it has a very clear "humans can do anything" message on top of all the badassery. If you need something to tell you to follow your dreams, GL is the show to watch. Obviously not effective on everyone, but it is for quite a few people. Episode 11 really effected me.

This.

and Cowboy Bebop.

I'd recommend CB first over GITS if you can't decide which one to try first. Both great shows but CB is a lot more enjoyable imo.

The only things it inspired in me were eye-rolling and boredom. I can't take a show seriously when its message is the dominant one found in children's programming.

The replys are the same if OP wanted your basic anime recommendation thread vs this "Adult Anime" as in mature grown ups anime thread.

Thanks for this thread. I recently got Hulu and realized that anything that is good on Hulu is either anime or Quantum Leap so, I decided it's about time I got into anime.

The OPs definition of 'adult' was defective from the start unless he's really looking for more in the vein of Urotsukidoji. lol.

I think if you stress the 'a', you are after maturity of content. If you stress the 'dult', you want boobs.

1) Just because the thematic elements are common in children's entertainment doesn't degrade their worth.

2) It's not supposed to be serious. The strength of Gurren Lagann is in its execution of well worn cliches, not that it some kind of deep and and compelling metaphor for the human condition.

3) There are few recent works that are truly original in the sense that they tackle something never before touched by other artists throughout history. Execution is more or less everything in modern storytelling.

I tried to watch Cowboy Bebop but gave up after 6 episodes because I only enjoyed 1 of them, 4 episodes into Samurai Champloo at the moment and it's slightly more enjoyable but still I'm struggling there seems to be no storyline to speak of.

Thanks haly, I guess I'll avoid the rest.

An actually matoor show for adults with not enough boobs or explosions given what the OP describes.

Not the OP, but I do generally gravitate towards anime that prominently features adult characters.

The less teens, children, and moe girls running around, the better, I say.

Samurai Champloo has no character development and almost no plot. I don't know why so many people like it.

Damn, I made this thread over a year ago, I have no idea who bumped this thread again. Anyway since I created this thread, I have watched only 3 animated series as I have been busy more than I expected.

Cowboy Bebop - did not like this and gave up halfway through, some episodes were interesting, but I prefer shows that have a story arc that continues, yes I know am gonna get a lot of hate for this comment
Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes - stopped watching after a few episodes, I did not like this which was surprising as I enjoy other superhero cartoons like Spiderman (90s and Spectacular), X-Men Evolution, Justice League. Maybe I need to check out Batman TAS, as I heard good things about that.
Avatar - this was incredible, it is probably the best animated show I have ever watched beating Berzerk and Rouri Kenshin

I currently have a lot of free time and may watch another animated series, currently I am watching Game of Thrones (not a animated series), but after I finish marathoning this series I will probably check out another animated series. I am thinking of checking out Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, is it any good.

UPDATED the OP by the way

LEGEND OF GALACTIC HEROES
LEGEND OF GALACTIC HEROES
LEGEND OF GALACTIC HEROES
LEGEND OF GALACTIC HEROES
Black Lagoon
Baccano
GunGrave
LEGEND OF GALACTIC HEROES

Watch LoGH and decide if it is for you. If it clicks it will be one of THE BEST shows. You can probably tell if you'll like it from the movie (Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War) that recaps episodes 1 and 2.
*It's even on certain popular video websites.

Look dated because it is old, but becomes a non-issue as you get engrossed in it.

Black Lagoon is crazy life in modern day pirate shenanigans
Baccano has a great summary listed above
GunGrave I really enjoyed, but make sure you watch 2 eps in

STORY: I'd like the plot to be something that continues, with a big story arc, basically after each episode finishes I want to be like "damn, need to see what happens next".
I watched far too many LoGH eps like that. Action is more like swing of space battles about strategy lasting 2-3 episodes at times, but you do get some nice hand to hand axe combat and such. There's enough in there.

Is this as good as the manga? The manga was drop dead funny.

I would say no, but they got a fantastic Japanese voice actor for Madarame. Animation wasn't up to snuff though until the 1st ova onwards.

The only things it inspired in me were eye-rolling and boredom. I can't take a show seriously when its message is the dominant one found in children's programming.

Gurren Lagann was children's programming, or at least it aired in the children's programming timeslot in Japan.

I watched Neon genesis evangalion because people here were positive. That was the most despressing crap ever. Sorry but letting children with problems save the world is lunatic. Even for a anime.
