I watched Neon genesis evangalion because people here were positive. That was the most despressing crap ever. Sorry but letting children with problems save the world is lunatic. Even for a anime.
The message of the anime was children are our future.

Yes, the primary director of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion was heavily depressed at time of final episode production. They also ran out of money.
Thanks that explains a lot. It was really getting depressing near the end. I skipped some of the scenes. Like the OP i am searching for action anime's that are not depressing. I love humor and action. I watched Afro samurai, Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop. What other series can you recommend for me?

Gurren Lagann, definitely, or FLCL. They're both from the studio that made Evangelion, but FLCL was made explicitly to cheer everybody up after Eva and Gurren Lagann more or less was an exercise in doing the most awesomely traditional super robot series imaginable.

FLCL is also like six episodes long. Be forewarned though that it kind of doesn't make sense, at least on a casual viewing.

Lets see...

Seirei no Moribito
- action, good story telling, good characters, Adult
I definitely would not put "action" as a bullet point for Seirei no Moribito.

Michiko E Hatchin
- action, good story telling, good characters, Adult
He specifically said in the OP he didn't want something episodic with only a loose overarching plot that is only occasionally brought to the forefront. He couldn't make it through Cowboy Bebop ffs, and you recommend MeH. Don't get me wrong, I loved the show, but I don't think it's a good recommendation.

edit:

I think you may have posted the MeH recommendation before he edited the CB part into the OP. Well, to the OP: You probably won't like MeH if you couldn't finish CB.

You on the other hand would be a prime candidate for a Michiko to Hatchin recommendation. Also Shura no Toki is a show that I always like to recommend as it is so rarely mentioned.

I just watched Wicked City. I recommend it if you like corny horror stories about the other side and demons.

I also watched Highlander: A Search for Vengeance or something like that and I RECOMMEND it.

Now onto Ergo Proxy.

Hmmm, looking at the new requirements, I think you might actually enjoy Code Geass. It's definitely got an overarching plot, a lot of intrigue and action, and some pretty good characters.

The story gets a little wacky halfway through.

Need more Fantasy. Swords & Sorcery. Not enough of those. The last one I really liked was Tears to Tiara. My favorite goes to Record of Lodoss War.

Can anyone suggest some Anime that is the opposite of what he is asking for? I would like to find something serious and depressing, and I've already seen Grave of the Fireflies and the Makato Shinkai films and Satoshi Kon. Anything else I should look for?

Now and Then, Here and There.

You should watch Scrapped Princess, very underrated (fantasy?) anime.

I have! And Berserk, I am trying to watch Utawrerumono(seems decent), and Elemental Gerad(but this one does seem a bit for the younger kids).

Shura No Toki
Legends tell of an invincible martial art known as Mutsu Enmei-Ryu, an unarmed style that allows the user to defeat any number of armed opponents using incredible speed and strength. This is the story of three generations of those who bear the name Mutsu, and their encounters and battles with the strongest fighters of their era

If you like Martial arts anime you will love this one....only problem people have with this anime is it's based on the fighting style and not a main character, but it very entertaining...

Watch DEATH NOTE. It's streaming on Netflix.

Your first viewing of the series will be an unforgettable experience. Just prepare to shout at the TV and gasp a lot.

And then when you're done, watch Monster and enjoy a slower-paced, but still exasperatingly amazing ride.

You should try out Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. It favors story over action, but the first season still has plenty of violence and gore. The storyline is amazingly complicated and you'll be banging your head against the wall at some points trying to figure out what's going on. The second season, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, really lacks in action for the most part but it will complete the main story.

There's a third season 'Rei' that introduces a twist into the story which is also worth watching.

1st season - 26 ep's
2nd season - 24 ep's
3rd season- 5 ep's

There's also a new season 'Kira' airing right now.

Definitly consider watching it if you have the time. Also, subbed > dubbed, it really is much better.

For the most part, I would agree with you.
I think in case of anime, teens and kids come off better than they do in live-action, although that's probably due to good child actors being a rarity, plus certain anime tries to make teens or kids act like adults anyway.

I love Initial D mainly because it steers clear of most anime cliches. No fights, no fanservice, no "kawaii" moments, etc.

You get a lot more out of it of you're knowledgeable about cars, but I'm completely clueless about them, and I still thoroughly enjoy it, as the characters are likeable and interesting, and the races are really enjoyable.

Oh, and the music is awesome.

PARANOIA AGENT.

Why haven't I seen more recommendations for this? It's a fantastic mystery/thriller/head trip, made by the same guy who did Tokyo Godfathers, Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue, and Paprika. Otomo was a bloomin' genius, and you all owe it to yourselves to watch this series if you haven't already.

Do it. DO IT NOW.

beyblade-metal-fusion-1.jpg

I believe this is everything you're looking for.

"beyblade is and was an anime, an official one, and in jap they cursed and had blood and partial nudity." - BrandonK (won an award for spinning for a real long time)

I don't get why people are recommending Monster. It's full of silly writing and plot points that come off as laughable due to how the show presents itself so seriously.

The anime is also a horribly paced, bland-as-hell adaptation. At first I thought the anime was better due to the more "deliberate" (really just cripplingly slow, but it works for the first story arc I think) pacing, but it remains at that pace for all 74 episodes. Ugh.

If anything, read Monster, don't watch it.

What's Otomo have to do with any of these? :P

Not enough Death Note recommendations. :(
Yeah, the show came and totally rocked the anime landscape a few years ago, and then seemed to disappear as swiftly as it blew up. But I guess that's what happens when you actually formulate a clear beginning and end for the series and don't squeeze the fandom dry with endless re-issues, remakes, spinoffs, and movies.

As for the Now and Then, Here and There recommendations - I agree that the show tackles lots of adult themes, but I don't necessarily agree that it does so in an adult fashion. Other than the
unwanted baby
development, there was little in the way of nuance or subtlety. The main villain was pure cheese and the idea that he could control the entire world was farcical at best.

So much wrong in one post.

Certainly one can prefer the manga or the anime, but the anime certainly isn't bad, the voice acting and music is excellent, and the animation isn't incredible, no surprise given the length of the series, but it gets the job done.

It's not the story's fault if you mistakenly assume it's supposed to be a completely realistic drama, the supernatural thriller trappings are there from the start.

Its not their fault you were too young to get it.

death note is the best series i havd ever seen, omg, it blew me away 2007 and i rewatched it several times, never gets old for me.

Please tell me you are being sarcastic.
Of course I'm joking. That doesn't mean you're right about Monster. As Branduil said, Monster is a supernatural thriller just because it isn't in your face with it doesn't mean its not. Hell the first thing you see in the show is a quote from Revelations about the Antichrist. Thats a pretty big indication that Johan shouldn't be viewed as someone with normal human capabilities. Had Urasawa actually tired to explain how Johan operates I might have agreed with you but he left it a mystery which kept him a terrifying force.

The issue with pacing and production values are more reasonable but as the show is over 70 episodes long budget sacrifices obviously had to be made and I'm certainly not going to complain when manga such as Monster get such a faithful adaptation.

First Cowboy Bebop was bad and now Monster?!

What's happening GAF?

TV and anime shows are never good unless the main focus of the show is one or more story arcs that span the entire series, or at least an entire season. Good shows also need to focus on characters and character development also needs to span the entire series. Shows that have a bunch of self contained stories of the week that start and are wrapped up in single episodes are never very good. (I"ve never seen Monster.)

This post is wrong on all points, but weirdly while we have had plenty of anime vs manga discussions on the work there haven't been that many "this story is so silly arguments", which is weird, because you think that would be a more common complaint.

That's the thing, though. "Faithful" adaptations are generally not a good thing. It kills the pacing and often makes for visually boring works.
