Recommend me some console Dungeon Crawlers & Roguelikes

Shiren is probably the best of the console roguelikes. And Etrian Odyssey IV or Wizardry on PS2 for dungeon crawlers.

Might & Magic X is the best game in the vein of Wizardry in something like 15 years. If you really can't play PC games, maybe the iPad version of this will still happen?

I dunno, I think the Wizardry PS3 title was pretty good.

I actually did the math a while back and traced the "family tree" of some of the modern Wizardry games -- Class of Heros, Demon Gaze, and Elminage all hail from the same Japanese Wizardry game, (Wizardry Xth Generation 2). It's crazy how Japan's dev teams branch out over there -- you see something like Wizardry Xth which does well, but the team splits up and founds 3 other teams, and... yeah, it's crazy.

Didn't a crapload of 10 - 15 year old Dungeon Crawlers recently get released on Steam?
IIRC that includes Wizardry too.

Also I think Shining in the Darkness is on steam too on one of those SEGA mega drive collections.

Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land is the best console DC I know of. Amazing story, unique gameplay, lots to do.

Legasista is solid for roguelikery.

Chocobo Dungeon Wii. Pretty good dungeon crawler with a god tier soundtrack.

If you could handhelds then DS/3DS have a boatload of them.

I haven't played any of those, I should look into it. This is one of my favorite genres.

What's a good one to start with?

Of those I mentioned?

Wow, uh, tough to say. Basically, Wizardry Xth Generation either directly spawned or heavily inspired (as in, someone from the dev team joined another dev team which suddenly started doing DCs) like 4 games:

Class of Heroes
Elminage
Generation Xth -> Demon Gaze
Etrain Oddysey

In addition, there was recently a Japanese development push called the "Wizardry Renaissance" - a push to make new Wizardry games. We got one of those games, Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls, and it's expansion. I mention that because, IIRC, it was by one of the above's devteams.

W: LoLS is amazing. It's a true Wizardry game, using the original Wizardry's classes (With a Japanese bent -- for example, Dwarven women look like little anime girls, Gnomes are some sorta Brony Fursona thing, etc). It's hard as balls, especially in the end and postgame content. It got iffy reviews in the US media, unfortunately, because modern gamers expect an achievement every 5 button presses and the only game over screen you should ever see is the one you have to unlock ironically.

I believe W: LoLS also got an iOS port. Didn't touch it, as I use Android.

Elminage is amazing but you'll have to get past the somewhat odd localization. It's not the fault of the English publisher, their parts are perfect, as far as I can tell the Japanese dev team did the actual game mods, which have questionable English in them -- literally, they just put the Japanese into Google Translate. However, a 1.1 patch fixed most of that. It is one of, if not the original, "neo Wizardry" series game, adding the neo races that Wizardry 6 added and Japanese Wizardry games expanded on -- Catgirls, Dragongirls, Demongirls, Fairygirls... As well as the Neo Wizardry Classes added in the Japanese ones -- Alchemist, a Kung Fu fighter, a maid...

Class of Heroes 2 was recently released, and the expansion / rerelease for the PS3 will be out on PSN "soon." The sequel, Class of Heroes 3 for PSP/PS3 will be out "not as soon." 2 is a solid game although the English localizer thinks it's OK to redesign the game's systems - nerfing or disabling spells he thinks aren't balanced, for example. It's still a great game but that leaves a seriously bad taste in my mouth. It's still a must by - the game's great, the localization is amazing, and it's a lot of fun.

Demon Gaze for the Vita isn't out in English yet, and the other games by this particular developer haven't made it stateside. Generation Xth is getting an English fan patch but isn't done yet. I am on semi-Media Lockdown on Demon Gaze, although if it is anything like the previous games in the series the class system is based around you channeling, either via magic or scifi (DNA, yo), ancient heroes. For example, you're not a "Samurai," you're summoning the spirit of Oda Nobunaga, or somesuch. They all looked really good and I'm very excited for it. NISA is doing the localization and already has a Limited Edition up on their website.

Etrain Odyssey 4 recently was released, and a remake of EO1 was also recently released, both on the 3DS download store. I do not own EO4 or EO1R, I should fix that.

Edit: Oh, there's also the upcoming Conception 2, that might be worth a look at.

Apparently Mind Zero for Vita is getting a localization, but it doesn't seem to be too good.

I believe you mean MIND≒0. The ≒ is important.

≒ is a math symbol meaning "Approximately equal BUT NOT EQUAL, to."

It's not read as "Mind Zero", it's read as "Mind Approximately Equal to Zero."

Since the game revolves around supposedly non-sentient creatures or something, the fact that they're Approximately mindless -- BUT NOT EXACTLY -- is probably a plot point.

Aksys. Niiice. Day one preorder, and belongs on this list, OP.

I see Azure Dreams was mentioned. I loved that game. That reminded me of some other DS roguelikes. One is Tao's Adventure which was sort of a sequel to Azure Dreams but nowhere near as good. The others are the two Izuna games. I played the first and liked it but never got around to the second.

A PS2 game which has many elements of dungeon crawlers and roguelikes is Grandia Xtreme. A lot of people bag on that game but I quite like it. It has the great Grandia battle system but there are three randomly generated dungeons in addition to the main dungeons and it requires lots of grinding for skills and equipment.
