Red Band Trailer For Spike Lee's OLDBOY Remake

Considering it's supposed to be based more on the manga than the film, it doesn't half look like just a shot-by-shot remake of Park's creation.

Looks fine if I ignore the part of me that has seen this movie already in a different language.

Also, I remember this as well:

Early impressions have claimed this version has an even more fucked up take on the plot, so... We'll see, I guess.

and that makes me curious. De-fucked up'ing the plot was the biggest thing I expected this version to do.

IIRC in the Korean version it's told that his daughter is in another country or something. So this chick on the tv is likely another deception

All the quirkiness and peculiarities of the original seem to be gone. One of the most dramatic plot points in the movie also seems to have been washed away, but it might just be a trick.

The trailer makes this movie look like by the numbers working man material.

That plot point is still there.

I got the vibe from the trailer that that was actually just someone pretending. Hmmm I'm intrigued enough to watch it I guess.

this looks so fucking shity .. seriously! I hate us shit remakes, i hate peoble who ignore the better originals because its not mainstream enough. mhew fuck this bullshit.

Don't exactly get the outrage for this.. Oldboy isn't that great of a film that'd it would be completely sacrilege to remake it. Park Chan-woo is a better director than Spike Lee though.

For me, I'm hoping it's different enough from the original to make it stand on it's own, if it's shot-by-shot remake I'll pass.

Not sure, the vibe of the trailer? I know people do expect detailed a examination of something but just looks terrible to me.

Well no, not necessarily a detailed examination. Just wondering what it was that made you say terrible, since that's a pretty strong reaction. The actors look bad? The cinematography? The non-Koreaness of it all?

Also, judging by the trailer I can already tell that Olsen is going to make her role far more tolerable than the Korean version.

oh my god. you're embedding yahoo's player on your site. why not just provide a link directly to yahoo's site?

this bothers me way more than it should.

shameless expendable

im curious how Sam Jackson motivation differs from original

where the fuck is the phone

MAJOR SPOILERS for previous film and this remake, for those that want to know the ending differences.

This is from a test screening reaction:

The ending is even more incestuous than the original. The “big twist?” Still in there as is. However, the villain’s character…let’s just say the best thing about incest is that it’s the game the whole family can play! The last few minutes differ greatly from the Korean film in a way that I feel fits this version very well. I don’t want to give away too much, but to me, it almost makes more sense than the original’s ending.

So the villains mother and sister are alive and well and both double as his scantily dressed bodyguards? I'm also going to take huge risk (ahahaha) and say there's no hypnosis at the end of this movie.

Why would you want this to be a straight remake? The original wasn't a straight remake of its source material either.

I don't want it full stop. I haven't read the source material for the original movie. Where can I check it out?

spike lee has no creativity so he needs to bite off other directors

this is pretty much just a blatant ripoff

tarantino is rolling right now

it is a shame too since i love brolin and copley

And cue the parade of posters claiming remakes are unnecessary or that American audiences are too dumb for subtitles.

Show me a movie or a remake in this case that is considered necessary. Movies are just entertainment so why does it matter? It doesn't remove the original from existence, in fact it might only bring the original into the spotlight.

Majority of the world has to suffer through subtitles because Hollywood is the largest exporter of culture. Not the other way around. Not all countries make movies and those that do, don't reach the US. You guys honestly think if it was the other way around, and that for example Honk Kong was the dominant force of film in the world, we would not be getting all those movies subtitles or not?

I never understood the weird obsession gaf has with wanting movies to fail. Especially remakes. If its good then great. If its great then even better! It still doesn't wipe out the original.

Lol at everyone giving detailed reasons of why it looks like shit based off a movie trailer. Especially since movie trailers never really capture the true tone of the movie.

I'll probably end up seeing this since I really liked the Korean one and I'll be interested to see how this one turns out. That being said, it looked like both sure do share a lot of similar scenes/sets.

It's got such a different vibe to it. I felt the original was pretty thoughtful, and maybe it just didn't show in the trailer, but this felt more like a thriller. Dug that girl in the thong though.

As if in Hollywood trailers don't usually shoot their load and end up being better than the movie.

Everything maybe? When I watched the Korean version, just had an interesting feel to it. Maybe it's the acting or all those things but when I see this trailer, everything doesn't seem good at all. If I don't like something, I just don't like it. Not saying the movie will be bad because I know trailers can be misleading but this thread is about the trailer and to me it looks terrible.

So he knows
what his daughter looks like, pretty much takes away the huge twist from the original

Instant pass based on this. Maybe I'll check it out after it's released for streaming or DVD/Blu-Ray, but taking out one of the main twists just seems horrible.

I guess they could make the twist something else, but man...that twist from the original is just fantastic/disturbing all at the same time. No way Spike could top that.

Looks like it could turn out decent, which is on par with what the original was.

Some of them already came into the thread ready to hate regardless.

Of course a bit hard to tell from just the trailer but it seems like they changed
the entire incest thing? I mean he obviously seems to know what his daughter looks like?

The new twist is that
she ISN'T his daughter, and the guy in this one is just as pissed off since he wanted it to be incest.

True tone? This seems to be following the original pretty closely, so there's really not much to speculate upon in that regard.

The best and worst thing I can say about the film based off the trailer is it looks as pointless as I figured it was going to be. Great for people who have troubles reading subtitles, but I'm not seeing anything that's making me want to go see it.
