this looks so fucking shity .. seriously! I hate us shit remakes, i hate peoble who ignore the better originals because its not mainstream enough. mhew fuck this bullshit.

You can't really say that when the movie hasn't come out and you're basing it off a trailer.

Instant pass based on this. Maybe I'll check it out after it's released for streaming or DVD/Blu-Ray, but taking out one of the main twists just seems horrible.

I guess they could make the twist something else, but man...that twist from the original is just fantastic/disturbing all at the same time. No way Spike could top that.

I'm guessing the girl on the video might be an actress hired by the person who captured him, giving a false image of his kid.

When I first heard Spike Lee, I was in for an all-black version of Oldboy. Why? I dunno.

But this is acceptable. Dat Elizabeth.

I only skimmed the trailer, no sound at the moment.

Even if
the girl on TV isnt his real daughter, wouldn't the girl that's helping him be able to put 2 and 2 together and realize this guy who is trying to save his daughter and has been missing 20 years is her dad?
I really hope they don't fuck the ending up.

Also, I'm put off by just the poster. He looks so clean and shit coming out of that box

I was trying to be optimistic here, but this looks like it brings nothing new to the table whatsoever. Shame. Seeing the original in a packed theater was one of the highlights of my film-going life; this will come out, make $30 million, and the world will spin on.

Possible. All I know is that this had been a bad idea from the beginning. I've could not get behind any of the recent remakes or suggestion of remaking existing Asian cinema masterpieces. I've watched quite a few and most seem to pale in comparision to the original. You could even expand this to most of the foreign films that have been remade for American audiences.

I am biased right now against this movie.

MAJOR SPOILERS for previous film and this remake, for those that want to know the ending differences.

This is from a test screening reaction:

The ending is even more incestuous than the original. The “big twist?” Still in there as is. However, the villain’s character…let’s just say the best thing about incest is that it’s the game the whole family can play! The last few minutes differ greatly from the Korean film in a way that I feel fits this version very well. I don’t want to give away too much, but to me, it almost makes more sense than the original’s ending.

Could also be this. Missed it because I'm not smart and didn't read all the posts in the thread before posting. This seems better, but I'd have to see it in action before I could judge whether it actually works with the revised story.

Arguably, you could make the same complaint about the original;
it's easy enough to believe that she would have been too young to imprint her father's face to her memory, especially if she was put into a loving foster home soon after her mother was killed. A stretch? Sure, but not completely implausible.

How does him being imprisoned for 20 years fit into the plan? I'm trying to figure out why they would diverge from the original in that regard.

It is really lacking that quirky vibe of the original.

Also the cinematography is really lacking. That one shot where he punches the mirror? so lame. the original was beautifully shot, I thought.

I imagine that they wanted to make sure that she was unambiguously of legal age; I can see why 15 years would be less palatable for American audiences.

As someone who's never seen the Korean film this actually looks pretty good, not sure if I want to check out the original before or after though. How big of a deal is this twist everyone keeps talking about anyway, without spoilers, can it really be THAT fucked up?

It's pretty fucked up.

To be honest it didn't set off any negative reactions and the cast looks good.

Obviously the final product could be much better or worse than what's been shown here so there's nothing definitive to say. But it certainly could be something enjoyable to watch on cable if nothing else.

City on Fire is nothing like Reservoir Dogs. At most, and even exaggerating the similarities, it's akin to The Shining movie vs the novel.

Anyways I think this might have potential. I think the original is great but I can accept this as another adaptation of the original magna.

Get the hell out of here with this shit. It looks like it's pulling way too much from the original film, so why even make it?

Elizabeth Olsen looks terrible.

I do hope they change the story considering we all know what happens in the original.

To the people that haven't seen it yet make sure to watch the Korean movie first.

This remake seems pointless.

Actually, I'd say to wait for this one. If this movie intrigues them, why not wait for it? The only thing watching the older one is going to do is either upset them or make them indifferent to this one, which is just unfair.

That's not for you to decide what's best.

Of course a bit hard to tell from just the trailer but it seems like they changed
the entire incest thing? I mean he obviously seems to know what his daughter looks like?
Pretty much.

Unless it's a ruse... but I doubt it. I don't think the USA is ready for
father-daughter fucking in a mainstream movie
.

Good point, in that case I'll avoid spoilers just for the sake of being the dissenting opinion in the inevitable SPOILERS thread.

Looks ok, but I doubt the soundtrack is going to touch the original. Hollywood only likes generic orchestra and horns. The music was one of the main reasons I liked the original so much.
