Red Band Trailer For Spike Lee's OLDBOY Remake

All that from three to five second clips taken from said scenes?

You people.

That's the impression I get from the trailer. As I said further down in my post I could be wrong, but if you look at trailers for visually stunning films like Only God Forgives, The Grandmaster or Skyfall (not speaking of the overall quality of those films), you know the final movie is looking good. Here the cinematography (not mentioning the music, because that one could have been chosen for the trailer only) just looks serviceable. I emphasize the stylistic aspect because that is what I liked the most with the original.

No. I'm not saying they were bad, but the original actors were better.

And you're nuts if you think it's more impressive visually. Minus one questionable scene, the original looks fantastic and creates a better atmosphere.

Nah. Both actors in the American version are superior. Definitely. And I preferred the atmosphere created in the remake.

Looks terrible, a soulless copy/paste, and one of the best thing about Oldboy was the music, the trailer score is so generic it hurts.

this will be like the remake of the girl with the dragon tattoo, good movie but still highly unnecessary because the original was perfectly ok

People aren't allowed to remake films anymore because snobs think the original is so good? What ridiculousness by alot of people in this thread.

The hallway fight looks like it may be some choreographed Jason Bourne trained killer stuff rather than the believable gritty throw down in the original. Of course that's just judging by a split second of footage not even showing the fight.

I wouldn't say remakes are unnecessary just because the original is good. Infernal Affairs was perfectly fine and I can't really say that The Departed is actually better, but no one ever said that it was redundant.

Looks pretty good to me, I don't have all the emotional baggage/bias of seeing any of the originals so coming in clean-slate it looks interesting.

Most film snobs probably don't care if a movie gets remade anyways. As long as it is good and not 1:1 shot remake.

It doesn't look bad but I don't know if I'll see it. Maybe when it comes on TV or something I'll watch it.

Oldboy is the film that really got me into Korean, and pretty much, open to all foreign films in general.

Why don't directors change remakes more nowadays? Take the premise and change the setting so its not so obvious. When has a remake ever matched the original when all the director really did was put it in english?

I thought Let Me In was pretty damn good in comparison to Let the Right One In...

I liked the trailer a lot. Pretty much exactly what I thought a Spike Lee version of Oldboy would be. I'm a Spike Lee fan. He is a great director and even his lesser movies are entertaining if forgettable. I just wish the movies he really wants to make would actually get funding. He wouldn't have made Oldboy otherwise.

I also have no problems with remakes either. We all retell stories, our own and other people's. Someone telling their version of story is cool, especially when I respect the creative behind the new version.

Yeah the cat scene was shit. But thats really the only crappy scene and its basically due to coffee change CG budget.

You know what remake looks fantastic? Blood Ties by the French director behind Tell No One: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONz6R4LF5nY‎

And while on that note, the screenplay to the remake of Tell No One is excellent. Does anyone know if that film was placed on the backburner? Haven't heard about it since Ben Affleck was attached to direct.

Fright Night's original poster used to give me nightmares. That's all I'll say on that.

Regarding remakes, I don't mind them, but I can't help but think it's effort wasted best used towards original works.

I guess it's okay with a foreign film to get more exposure.

I just don't see why this needs to exist. The trailer did nothing for me.

I thought this was a very cool remake

Awesome cast. NIcely shot. Really fun summer-time flick.
I want to see the Evil Dead one too. Just waiting for the BD
I thought the Fright Night remake was a piece of shit. Evil Dead however was surprisingly decent.

Show me any movie that "needs to exist".
Not everybody wants to see the same thing regurgitated over and over again at the cinema, especially when it was done quite well the first time. There are a limited amount of films that are released each year and it would be nice to see more originality out there, especially from a filmmaker like Lee who is more than capable of it. Not all remakes are inherently evil or worthless, but many of them are lazy cash grabs.

The trailer didn't impress me particularly, but it's not gonna over write every existing copy of the original, so who cares, even if it ends up sucking? I'll watch it, as i'm curios about it.

Oh lord as long as it's not filmed by a guy having a seizure listening to Bauur's Harlem Shake and edited by someone doing their best to piss me off. The Fight scenss in the Bourne films gave me motion sickness.

Any film you have to buy a ticket for is because someone wants to make money off of it. Especially those films that have big budgets, and pretty much every movie in a multiplex has a big budget (in the grand scheme of things, an inexpensive movie doesn't really exist. It's only in relation to other films that they are considered as such). And most of them are lazy cash grabs. They are looking at what else is popular and, if they aren't remaking something, they are adapting or making something similar to what's already out there. And there are actually a lot of films released each year worldwide. Probably more movies are released each year than the average person will see in their entire life. Not everyone has a deep knowledge of film. For some people Spike Lee's Oldboy will be entirely new to them.

Of course those of us that have seen a lot of movies want more original ones made, but we aren't the audience most movie studios are targeting. If Spike could have got funding for one of his original ideas he would have made that. He couldn't and so he made Oldboy.

Let Me In > Let The Right One In
Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Christ. It's embarrassing that people revere these guys. I'll say it again.

Yeah, just finished. It was exactly what I expected. They were so intent on telling me how the two movies were different, that they neglected to really explain why the differences in the sequel made it bad. Yes, the protagonists in both films differ in terms of motivation and development. But why is the remake's take bad? They never say. I guess I'm just supposed to believe that the success or failure of the remake hinges on how closely it adheres to the original.

Let Me In's characters, their development, and their motivations make sense within the narrative. Though the characters arrive at slightly different places than the ones in the original in terms of their relationships and arcs, that doesn't mean that they arrived at some inferior destination.

The guys at Twin Perfect really are fucking horrible when it comes to reviewing movies. I guess I that's to be expected when, instead of judging a movie by what it gets right and wrong on its own, you spend the entire time discussing how much it isn't like a film that came before it. Ebert they ain't.

Of course a bit hard to tell from just the trailer but it seems like they changed
the entire incest thing? I mean he obviously seems to know what his daughter looks like?

My guess is that she's an actress, and the real one is the woman who's helping him.

Say what you want about the story, but the original movie was beautifully choreographed and filmed. This movie looks kind of cheap in comparison.

Spike Lee has some talent, but Chan-wook Park has one of the best eyes in the industry when it comes to composition and overall direction. He is truly inventive. He also tends to have fantastic music in his films.

Here's the problem with remakes: why bother if you can't improve upon the original? There are a very, very, very small amount of remakes that are better than the original film. It is fighting a losing battle. I'm sure fans of Spike Lee probably don't want him to be attached to such a project anyway.
