How is it not a remake?

Was Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes a remake?

Oldboy was a comic book first. It's like saying Girl with a dragon tattoo is not a remake of Men who hate women or whatever the Swedish title for the film was because it was a book first.

The comic book is significantly different to the Korean movie based on it.

Saw the movie first then read the manga when they released it here, and the manga's ending was more of a wtf to me than the movie. Those clips make it look like it'll be closer to the comic. Curiosity will probably get me to the theater.

Couple of clips popped up online...

Looks...eh. Doesn't seem to be a direct remake either, so I guess it's got that going for it.

Absolutely awful, hammy, cheesy, poorly put together, overly forced etc. Bad guy seems terrible. Que the obvious British thick stereo typically accented villain. The introduction of him in the bar, with his super skilled and strong, but absolutely slim super model like body guard was also silly, as was the general mood and editing. Why wasn't there music in the bar either? Just felt artificial, the whole thing.

I thought the trailers for this so far have been promising and I do think it has the chance of being a decent adaptation. These scenes though? Look really, really bad. Luckily they are just small snippets and don't necessarily reflect on the quality of the movie as a whole.

Those clips were so much worse than I expected.

On the bright side, it's only a few more preview clips away from switching from "unwatchably god awful to "captivating train wreck."

I'm asking you how it's awful.

I'll bite.

his old buddy is basically expositing with a calm, rational attitude despite the incredible, surreal situation.

the voice on the phone sounds like a monologue from a high school theater.

it is jar jar levels of distracting.

Hmm. As someone who's been cautiously optimistic about this remake and who liked the trailer, I'm really not feeling those clips. I still want to be proven wrong and have it turn out to be a good movie, though I'm not as hopeful any more.

Haha, it's not like it's a trick question. If someone gives an opinion, I just expect that they'll be capable of explaining how they arrived at it.

Absolutely agree, they feel like something you'd expect to see from a student movie/Asylum productions...

I'm in for Ellie Olsen, but these clips have pretty much killed any interest in this movie. Everything in them just seems completely off, nib pretty much touches on everything I have issue with in these clips.

I agree, but I wonder how hammy some of the lines from the original would seem if you knew Korean.

It's not even about the lines being hammy. It's that ridiculous acting. You can still very much tell when an actor is delivering a shite performance in a different language.

The acting in the original is pretty hammy to begin with though. But it can be excused as it's meant to be a heavily stylized revenge thriller.

Overt bad acting most likely.

But if you're not privy to a culture/social norms, the cadence of a language and its natural vocabulary and delivery then its really hard to judge a line or lines simply based on, "Oh it sounds fine to me and he certainly looks emotional on screen ...". That's not really enough.

Its not impossible to know when you're watching something amazing, but I think it's a bit harder to watch a foreign film and be able to judge it with the same clarity you would a domestic film.

I hate this thread so much.
People act like remakes ruin the original movie. Makes no logical sense at all to me. Can someone explain this to me?

This could almost warrant a new thread, but I figured this one should read about it first.

“Produced by Good Universe and distributed by FilmDistrict, the movie possesses a dark baroque quality that will likely alienate some critics and even seems to have elicited a mixed reaction in Brolin. ‘I do have opinions, but it’s better to bite my tongue,’ he said when asked what he thought of the finished film. (The actor says he was more enamored with Lee’s earlier three-hour director’s cut that was both quieter and filled with more character-centric moments.)”

Sounds like test audiences had their way with Spike's film.

The film was never going to please everyone. Taking the balls out of it in desperation seems like it'll just made the potential audience even smaller.

Talked to one person who said it's better than the original and another who said it's one of the worst films of the year. Interesting...

It sounds like Spike's original cut was much more character focused, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. As the article points out, it's actually a good 15 minutes shorter than the original now.
Maybe the proper DC will be out on Blu.

Fun.

Its not just this thread. To gaf all remakes are terrible, unnecessary, and or offensive.

Doesnt ruin the original and if anything opens up the possibility of a larger audience for the original. Especially for a movie from a market that most people aren't actively looking out for.

Just watched the original last night. It's really something. I actually think Spike Lee is a potentially good choice to do the remake. What's important to me is not so much the specific "twists", but capturing the tragedy and subverted approach to revenge that the original did so well. Like so much classic tragedy, the shocking stuff was a means to making a larger point. If the movie drops the larger point in order to make it a more Hollywoodized crowd-pleaser, then it would be a big disappointment.

Embargo is pretty much up:

[Review] Oldboy

Coming hot off the heels of the original’s 10-year anniversary, Spike Lee‘s remake of Chan-wook Park‘s Oldboy may succeed in swaying domestic audiences unfamiliar with the source material. Sadly, those who have seen the 2003 film will not be as impressed.

So is this the edited down version? I heard there were problems with Spike and producers wanting to trim down the movie.

Well, Brolin mentioned a 3-hour cut that he preferred...but that would never see theatrical release. So, yeah, I'm sure this cut has Lee's blessing but we'll see.
