Red Dead Redemption 2: Do you actually think that this game is fun or do you think that it's boring?

Lord of Edge.
I really liked it while I was doing the main story and some side quests. After that though, the game is really boring and frustrating.

Playing the sequel right now, and besides the framerate (wich should be improved) the flaws are simply exaggerated, it could be an 'average' game with a cool story and fun characters, just made with a low budget wich this industry isn't kind to, a B game that runs/looks like a C game

But gamers are drawn to the charming writting and characters first they just got used to the low production values and lack of polish along the way

For example, its pretty cool there is an open world game were you use a skateboard to navigate and do tricks, there are convenient fast travel points in the map, and the quest design is standard stuff, but not horrible, its not broken. (again except the low framerate)

edit: omg i thought this thread was about Deadly Premonition😅back to playing

If you dont get PC version you wasting your time, also make sure you get the PS5 and XSX version as well then you can complete the circle and make the game really fun!

Is there an open world game that would actually be enjoyable and not want to kill myself of boredom? Genuine question.

Red Dead Redemption is one of my favorite games of all time. I purchased RDR2 on launch day and pshysical because I wanted to play immediately. The first 6-8 hours I was amazed. After a week of long playing sessions I realized I was forcing myself to keep going. Then I talked myself into giving it a rest because I wasn't enjoying it. I didn't touch the game again for 18 months. Last may I decided to give it another chance taking advantage of confinement and I only lasted 3 hours.

I can't grasp exactly what it is but something about this game doesn't click with me. It's not the pace. I usually enjoy traversing a big open world and losing myself in it. I know I dislike the camp mechanic. I know I did like the music, characters and overall feel of RDR more. But I honestly can't tell why I'm unable to finish this game. I finished a lot of inferior sandbox games before. I can't with RDR2, i don't have fun with it and I don't feel invested in the story neither.

Maybe the problem is I wanted to like it so hard that it makes me very sad it's not the case. Maybe that's why I feel so frustrated playing it. Maybe i'm comparing it wit the amazing memories of playing RDR for the first time.

Never really interested me, we've had games like this on a similar take like Call of Juarez , what I would have liked to have seen is (as mentioned before) a native american take on this which is RARELY if ever portrayed..

I wouldn't say most of it is "fun", but I would rarely use boring either. It's very much going for a certain feeling and it's inevitably divisive. I was happy to spend 100+ hours in that world, personally.

Once Upon A Time In The West is not a "fun" movie, but it's a goddamn masterpiece.

Playing the game on PC with cheats transforms it. Unlimited horse stamina, no need to keep your horse or character healthy or all that annoying shit.

Playing the game on PC with cheats transforms it

This, though I chose to speed things up instead - increased the walking, swimming, running and all horse riding speeds, removed forced slow walking such as when in camp, etc. That improved the game massively for me. I also used them to get my guns back when the game forced you to use a particular gun for a mission.

In terms of story, writing, characterisation, cut scene direction, visuals, scale and World design it’s a 10/10.

In terms of it’s extremely dated mission design, annoying animations and unresponsive controls it’s a 5/10.

Overall a 7/10 for me. If the controls were fixed it would jump to an 8/10 but there’s no fixing most of those missions which feel straight out of the PS360 era in terms of design and constraints placed on the player.

The missions are cinematographic as fuck but very limited in the gameplay department.

fucking with the open world is the real fun.

I also enjoy the extreme realism of the game, we have a lot of gamey games already, only rockstar make this type of games, but i guess it's not for everyone.

Controls can be tricky and aim\cover are fucked up.

I'm just re-playing the game on pc in these days (i ended a session like 5 min ago) and the game is still a lot of fun in the right occasions. (it can be boring too of course, especially the fucked up wanted system)

I'm actually struggling through the game at the miinute on PC. I do like the missions, the characters, the voice acting, the graphics, but boy it controls so clunky, and its so overly complicated.
Its a struggle for me to get through, not going to lie.

It request a certain amount of time before everything become automatic, is far less user friendly than others open world games.

I like all the tedium of it but god i hate the mission design and character movement, the game feels more linear than linear games when doing missions and your character moves with more inertia than Arthur from ghost n' goblins. I have tried to play it several times but whenever i have to fight and do missions i just quit, had to restart like 3 times the game because of the horrible prologue mission.

This has been a disappointing thread to read because I just finished the first game on PS3 thinking it was boring because it's an old game and that RDR2 would be so much better. The first game is extremely repetitive, with almost all the side-quests having to be repeated. By the time I lassoed my third wild horse in one particular side-quest the game just felt like a series of chores. Escort me here, deliver this wagon there, pick some flowers on the other side of the map and return them to me etc., Any mission that wasn't combat related just felt like I was checking boxes.

I still want to give the second game a chance but I'm not looking forward to it as much.

If it helps, know that I roughly felt the same about the first game. I enjoyed it for awhile, but it quickly felt like it was just mostly an empty world with empty tasks. Red Dead Redemption 2 does a better job of rewarding you by having far more diverse gameplay (encouraging different weapons for different game, having several mastery paths that unlock unique gear and have unique challenges, an incredibly in-depth camp mechanic, more robust side games, and a world that feels a lot more alive than any Rockstar had made before). I have replayed Red Dead Redemption 2 twice at this point, and there's always something new to see or find.

That said, no one can make you play something you have no real interest in, but Red Dead 2 is a lot more immersive about its side content. Some see that as a detriment to the game, but I personally enjoyed it. It's definitely different enough from the first one that it might be worth your time to check it out even if you didn't completely enjoy the first one.

The inbreds on this thread watched one dumbass nakeyjakey vid and jumped on the bandwagon to call the game ”boring” or “outdated” with no actual fucking argument or explanation.

As it turns out: no, having story missions play out in a linear fashion is actually not outdated at all! It’s literally the sole reason why the narrative is so widely praised; because of how tightly focused the missions are.

And just because the game is slow doesn’t make it boring.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was a fucking masterpiece.

Loved the game easily in my top 5 last gen. Dont think I'd ever play it again though, I've played a bunch of open world games since and just thinking about going back to that archaic walk and tap x to run movement makes me want to spew

I dropped this game because I was bored to tears with it. It was a huge waste of money that I will never return to. RDR2 certainly is high quality, but it’s most definitely boring for many who have played it.

Amazing game over all, though some of it's restrictions are silly; namely most causes of mission failures and not being able to retaliate to some NPCs and gang members.

Speaking of retaliation and gang members, I had a funny glitch earlier. I had an altercation with a passer by near camp, which caused the usual pop up message "Enemies were led back to camp", faded to black screen, reset Arthur back to camp and took away honor. That's all normal...
Well, apparently not this time. It triggered an argument amongst camp members as they all proceeded to beat the living shit out of each other straight afterwards. I wonder what made this happen?

It's almost like a job.
But a decent paying job.
The story is a great payoff and the world is rewarding, but the controls are stiff and the mission design dull.

Had to uninstall it after about 9 or 10 hours. I fully intend to go back to it in the future and start again.
The game is a fantastic achievement, but boy does it feel awful to play. Now i'm a PC couch gamer, so i was using a controller, it may be much better on M/KB, but i spent most of the time fighting with Arthur to control him, even doing the simplest of things.
Zero fun for me, and i was gutted about it.

I am actually playing this game right now. All of the talk about how this game is so much better than Cyberpunk, I decided to play this after wrapping up Cyberpunk. I was quickly reminded about all of the little annoyances. It does so many things right and it is amazing looking. But the PC version has a sound bug after all these years that requires me to raise the volume in the sound mixer after starting the game. The controls are horrible. There are so many things to do in the game, the controls are overly complicated and messy. For being so much better than Cyberpunk, I am seeing plenty of bugs and glitches. In fact, I don't remember this many when I first played the game on PS4 years back. It seems much worse on PC after years of patches. The main story is actually over pretty quickly, so unless you are just messing around with hunting or bird watching or playing cards, it blows by pretty quickly. It feels like no sooner than we arrive at a new camp, a few missions later off to the next one. So much time is spent in the game eating, sleeping, and walking around. There are too many members in the gang and you barely get to know most of them. Still a great game and I am enjoying myself, but it is far from the perfect game. Another amazing open world game full of imperfections.

It took you 10 fucking hours to realize the controls weren’t right for you?

Jesus Christ dude 🤣

I plodded through it. It was my most wanted game. I even waited 6 months or so after the game launched on PC because of the bugs, i wanted a top experience so waited 6 months with my most wanted game.
If you think its 'strange' what i said, you should see some Steam user reviews where they give a game a negative review, while it says they played the game for 1000+ hours lol.

I bought this quite expensive from Epic Store when it first came out . People have been saying how good it is bla bla bla versus Cybepunk but I dont really seen it in . I'm just playing on and off because it's kinda boring and already spent 15 hours or so .

I’ve tried to play It twice. Once at launch and again recently. I really enjoy western film and literature but I just can’t get into this game. I can’t really articulate why, I think maybe it’s because it’s Rockstar.

I feel like anyone who accuses this game of being slow and boring went into it willfully ignorant, not knowing jack shit about it. It is mildly slower than the first game, which was already a slower paced game than other Rockstar fair at the time, but if you played RDR2 for the first time and were taken aback at it's pace, that is wholly the player's fault at that point and not really a legitimate criticism of the game in my view. It's like someone buying DOOM and then complaining that it's violent.

one of the most boring games of this generation for me. Played for roughly 20-25 hours on ps4 pro and stopped. Already at the ten hours mark I was bored and then eventually realized i was forcing myself to play. Stopped and never picked up again. biggest disappointment for me. Gameplay was boring and seemed more like a chore, way too realistic, boring missions, world way too large for my tastes (I have been burned out by open world games and really don't play them anymore except for a few exceptions) and the rhytm of the gameplay was too slow (doing every action seemed more like a chore/took too much time) and repetitive for me. The tasks just didn't seem fun at all for me.They just felt gratuitous realism.

Also just too many chores; why would I even like having to brush the horse, feed him, shave bears, clean gun, hunting and eating food all of them so often. I play games to have fun, not to do every day chores. It's also one of the reasons why I don't like survival games.

I'm also burned out by large open world (and especially those with huge maps with countless and an overwhelming number of markers on map) so I got bored by RDR2 probably also for that reason, and instead right now I prefer small denser hubs in games now (even better if with a more branched and non-linear narrative).

But I'm happy that people liked it, the developers certainly deserved all the praise and success they got unlike other developers who make just yearly copycat rushed game. Personally I liked the first rdr a lot more at the time (but I wasn't burned out by open world games back then); I also preferred that it was much less realistic and just more fun.

I loved rdr2 personally and couldn't tell you how many hours I put in to each session played. I appreciate exploration of a big open world isn't for everyone. I really enjoyed playing Arthur Morgan and was fully captivated with the storyline and all the side quests. I wasn't put off by the controls either.

I've just started a new play through on PC. There's a lot to love, a lot of the usual Rockstar greatness within it. I think its far from a masterpiece though. I actually like the weight of the controls and the way it plays but kept on getting frustrated with the actual level design and story. In regards to level design its like playing in a cage. You can see for miles but you're stuck in this rigid space tackling challenges in the most scripted and boring way imaginable. I would find that type of gameplay a lot more acceptable if these set pieces and levels lasted longer but i feel as soon as the action starts its basically over. There is so much wasted potential with the stealth system along with all these other systems they spent time plugging into the game.

Secondly the story....this is the most confusing to me. People really praise the story with this game. Whilst i applaud the direction and the way it looks and the tone in some spots, its story is muddled and the pacing is awful which sometimes renders it almost incoherent. You have gestures to slow build ups in the character arcs only for these to be dismissed suddenly in a mission. There appears to be weight to these characters at times but in the next act theres suddenly a flippancy surrounding them and these story threads get discarded. Also none of the characters come off as smart or real when they do some of the dumbest shit just to push the story into some exciting action scene. As usual you get the rockstar 'social/historical commentary' sprinkled throughout but as usual (the same with GTA) the writers seem out of their depth.

Red Dead Redemption 2 to me feels like it was developed by great devs all spread out working on their own thing but not communicating with one another properly to bring together a single vision. There are a lot of great systems at work in this game but there appears to be no actual game designers on staff to pull them all together. Then theres Red Dead Online.....possibly the biggest waste of potential in an online game ever.
