Redbox Renting Experiences?

I just want a gauge of experiences from using a renting kisok service for games. I've gotten to a point where I'm losing all general interest in video games because I just don't have any time for them. And me being a dad in 4 months will dramatically cut my free time down.

So right now I'm in a dilemma where I haven't found that game that will keep my interest. I primarily use my ps4. I also have a vita. And I'm pretty open to playing any genre.

So I think I'm gonna turn to renting til I find something I like.

Never used one, so I was wondering have you had good or bad experiences. Also, does it get pricey after awhile? Do you just happen to just rent over the weekend or a whole week to get everything you need to get from a game?

Isn't it like $3 per day for games?

You should look at Gamefly instead

Edit: Holy fuck at that pic

It's a good way to try a game you're not sure on for a night or play something that you can finish in a few days like a Call of Duty campaign. How long you keep a thing for depends on the game. If you aren't going to have a ton of time to play stuff renting might not be the best idea? Because you kind of want to play a bunch on a game you rent so that you aren't "wasting" the limited time you have.

Redbox has a very limited selection of games. Gamefly has a better selection, but operates on a queue system, which can be wonky, and you'd have to deal with shipping.

Only had the paper thing happen once, the first time I used it. That was a few years ago and lately I've been using them again with no issues. It's great being able to use hold for pickup online and I suggest using that if you want to rent something.

See if there is a Family Video near your or an illusive mom and pop rental store. That, or Gamefly. Redbox is a rip off for games

A great way to try a few games. I had a few unplayable games but the customer service was always helpful and credited my account and allowed me to rent again. Renting helps me not play all the time too.

Redbox is fine for popular games with short campaigns. So basically any AAA title that isn't an open world. I rented The Last of Us when it came out and ended up paying like $9 total to finish it.

The selection of games at Redboxes is typically pretty abysmal in my experience. The only games I've found for systems I own were shovelware.

It can be great if you know you can beat a game in a couple of days. My wife and I redboxed Until Dawn and made a fun weekend out of it, not bad for 6 bucks

Family Video and Mom and Pop shops are ripoffs as well.

It's like $7 for 3 days.

Gamefly is much better despite having to wait for delivery simply because you can play more within that time.

Besides you also avoid late fees, the cost of gas driving to said store, you can plan ahead and estimate when you will get a game in the mail, and you have more to choose from.

:/

But again. Video stores are more convenient if you want something now.

Redbox is great for new releases that only take a day or 2 to complete. I wouldn't get an epic lengthed game like the Uncharted trilogy, but Until Dawn was a perfect rental.

Redbox is nice if they have a game you want. If you feel you can get everything out of the game in under 2-3 days, you'll still be under $10 spent.

It's better than Gamefly if you only want to play the games for a night or two. Gamefly takes way too long to ship games. But if you need time with your rentals, Gamefly is better.

Between lots of codes being given away and then earning Playpass credits when I "rent" DVDs with other free codes, I've beaten quite a few games just by using Redbox:

Batman Arkham Knight
Until Dawn
Just Cause 3
The Order 1886
Transformers
Tearaway Unfolded

Never had a printed disk issue either.

Will probably try to do the same with Far Cry Primal.

It does its job of letting you try something overnight. You could blast through things if needed or wait for them to start doing more free rental promos like they were doing a ton last year (free weekend and Wednesday rentals). I used it for that garbage The Division and it saved me $60. So no complaints.

I've used it a bunch of times for games I just wanted to try. Just Cause 3, SFV and The Order 1886 which was perfect I beat it and took back for $3 or something. Their CS is great to if you have a issue. I've had to call for movies they fix right away and usually give you a code for a free rental.

I've used it a few times and bought a game from them with no issues. I wish there was a way to see if a certain location has had the fake disc issue.

The only video game I ever tried to rent from Redbox was Mortal Kombat X and it was photocopied. Got 3 free codes for that so no harm done I guess.

I've had good experiences, and it's hard to complain with the price, especially given how often they give out promo codes. I rented and beat Uncharted 3 from the Nate Drake Collection, and it gave me access to the UC4 beta, all for $1.50 thanks to a promo code.

Most games take so long to beat now that you come off cheaper waiting for them to go on sale than renting. The last one I rented from Redbox that I can remember was Arkham Origins, which ended up costing me at least $30 to beat. Only go for it if you know it's a very short game.

I've rented from Redbox a few times and never had an issue. I've rented from Gamefly off and on for many years and they're a really good service as well.

I'm not a fan of them because games that are multiple discs, they charge you for each disc... They should charge a combined fee for all the discs you'll need to enjoy the game.

It's good for shorter games, multiplayer ones you only want to spend a day or two with, and trial periods to gauge if you want to buy the game or not. I've never had problems with getting photocopies, but if you do I hear it's pretty easy to compensation in some form or another. Also, they're always having promos for free game rentals.

If this doesn't seem to be what you want, I would suggest a Gamefly sub. They have gift certs, so you can order a 3 month 2 games out at a time sub for like ~$36.

Saw that it was available at a local grocery store, got excited, then checked its inventory. The games were lacking, but a couple interested me a bit and I planned to check back. Then I saw that, to rent a game for a week, it'd end up being just shy of $20 CAD, so I said fuck that.

No exaggeration. No wonder it failed here.

For movies it's great. For games not so much. Since you only rent for 24 hours or so, renting a game for that time period is tough.

Though it can be really helpful for LAN stuff. Arranging a Call of Duty night with friends became a lot easier when we realized we could rent a few copies of the game rather than go out and buy them.

I don't get why games are more expensive to rent than movies. Obvious games cost more to buy (no idea of that's the case for rental/public use copies), but they also take more time. If they offered lower prices people would probably be more likely to rent them for several days at a time in order to complete them.

I've used it a couple times. I had a promo code that gave me a free movie rental that I used on a game. Ended up being like $1.50.

If you rent earlier in the day its good because you don't have to return it until 9pm the following day. Great for a short game or trying something out before you buy.

I rented tomb raider over a holiday weekend(had a coupon for a free day or something), loved it, and bought it later. Good experience for me.

Gamefly for sure. Buy the gift cards on their site and you get 3 months at 12$ a month for 2 games at a time.

What is going on in those photos? Does the machine scan the discs and people make color copies?
The machine scans the sticker in the middle, so people rent and copy the front of the disc that has the sticker on it and put it in the redbox case. The machine only checks for the sticker so it'll read it.

I dunno how people do this though since I don't think Redbox takes prepaid cards, they only take credit/debit cards with actual information on it about an owner.. So it would be easy to just check the last person who rented it.

Could be a case of them using stolen credit cards or something. Hell, I reckon that if you're at the point in your life where you're stealing games out of a Redbox you probably don't care about whether or not they know it. Like what's the worst Redbox would do? Send them a bill they won't pay?

They gave me a free rental once. So I got Elder Scrolls Online just to see what was up with that game. Got it home and saw the disc was covered in Dorito dust finger prints. Wiped it off and it played fine, but I thought it was pretty hilarious/gross.

never had a problem, but im usually the first person to rent a disc on release day. They annoyed me with farcry primal because they bumped the date of it coming to their kiosks a month on release day

Gamefly sent me a disc that was cracked in half, I returned it and got the game again...it was also cracked in half again. They wouldnt reimburse days to my subscription. Takes like 4-5 days for a game to get to me from them, fuck them. Easiest subscription cancel of my life
