Reggie via IGN: "Nintendo Will Support 3DS Beyond 2018"

People will bitch about anything. They are extending the life of their product. What's wrong with that? Even as a Switch owner, going by 3DS example, you should feel reassured that it would get games past the typical 5 year lifespan.

This is just a signal that they haven't been able to make as many Switch systems as they've wanted to because of shortages. If they are supply constrained through 2018 they need something to sell.

Hmmm. How so? You said that "Nintendo has said that they believe the appeal is that its a system that allows you to take and play your games everywhere."

But that's why the Switch works both portable and docked, so you can play your games anywhere.
I was referring to what Nintendo believes is the appeal of the Switch, not the 3DS.

Yeah they'll "support" it, may I ask how many in house developed 3ds games are announced? 0, because everything the 3DS will probably get is relatively cheaply made out-sourced games.

Good to hear as someone that likes the platform and has no plans to buy a Switch until it comes with a more reasonable screen size.

They're gonna squeeze it dry until they can't get anything more out of it. But this shouldn't even be that big of a deal.

Look at Nintendo's output for 2017. None of the A-teams are working on it. The mainline games are on the Switch.

Likely.

Next pokemon game is for Switch, that's all you need to know that the device won't make it very far past 2018 with Nintendo support. We are already getting most Nintendo IP from 3rd parties and table scraps from nintendo this year on 3DS, and even mainline handheld franchises are moving to Switch. Once again they can say they are supporting it past whenever all they want, but the proof is in the pudding, and the pudding is spin offs, and minuscule support by Nintendos own developers, because they're all working on Switch.

I don't think Pokemon Switch comes out in 2018 though. They said in the E3 Spotlight it could be more then a year before we see it. Not a year. We could be looking at Fall 2019 at the earliest. 2018 could be another release for the 3DS. Diamond and Pearl (originally on the DS) released in 2007. They'll be over 10 years old next year and next on the list to be remade. Assuming they don't go back instead and redo Generation 1 again. The Gen 1 remakes came out in 2004 on the GBA and could use an updating more then Diamond and Pearl.

Oh okay, since you sighted the 3DS and Nintendo not budging on it it did seem like your whole sentence was referring to the 3DS.

In that case, I think both of you are kind of saying the same thing.

I don't get the sudden hate for the 3DS.

Yeah, yeah. lol 240p in 2017 and we basically have a better option already but let it live its final years. The DS family has been nothing but amazing DS/3DS rivals PS1/PS2 in overal goodness.

bull. last EPD game for the thing besides ports and Miitopia was Triforce Heroes, and the one before that was A Link Between Worlds

We just had a thread about the "sudden hate" for the 3DS. There was a moderate consensus that the system has been a vehicle of necessity and people have hated it since the very beginning.

I am one of those people. I love 3DS games, I hate having to play them on a 3DS. I hate that great 3DS games are constrained by the technology they're made for. The 3DS is no friend of mine.

So the promise that the Switch would merge the home and handheld first party development into a single platform was bullshit all along.

Yeah good job Nintendo.

It's bad enough that third parties don't want to support the Switch, but you had to fuck it up as well, didn't you.

Fans believe it taking away games from the Switch (It's not.),

Of course. Where else will you put the next Pokémon?
The Switch, as announced in the Spotlight.

But seriously, Nintendo, just let the 3DS bow out. It had a great life, but Pokémon being confirmed to jump ship after US/UM was the final nail in the coffin for the 3DS family.

Clearly, we must respond by not buying 3ds games so that they get the idea. Join me, Switch brothers and sisters.

Down with the 3DS!

I just don't see it.

Intelligent Systems is working on the Switch game (Fire Emblem Switch).
Game Freak has announced a Switch game after Ultra Sun/Moon
The Bravely team (Square) is working on a Switch game (Octopath Traveler)
Atlus is working on a Switch game (Shin Megami Tensai) and some late localizations
HAL is working on a Switch game (Kirby 2018) along with the 3DS entry this year
Capcom is working on that Monster Hunter PS4 game.

You go down the line and it seems like almost all of the notable 3DS developers have announced or are currently working on Switch titles. Who do they even have that could be working on a 3DS project? Next Level Games maybe? Maybe Level 5 has some more Yokai Watch games in store. Maybe Nintendo finds a small team to work on a side project or a port?

Now maybe they have more 3rd party entries working on Nintendo IP's like Hey Pikmin and Metroid Samus Returns. I just don't see enough internal support from Nintendo for it to be more then a sporadic offering of titles eventually trailing off to nothing.

Yes of course, I don't want a screen that big on a handheld.
You'd be suprised by the amount of people spitting out that they want a switch XL which I think is hilariously dumb. I'm OK with the current size but for the love of god don't go bigger and heavier!

Going to guess they're supporting it while they can't get the Switch demand down fast enough. Once demand goes down enough where stores actually have a few units at MSRP (the people who wanted it got it), then I'm sure they'll stop supporting it and move everything onboard onto the Switch as they always wanted to consolidate all developing teams.

Hell, Atlus still has 3 games coming West in the next year or so on the 3DS.(excited for EO V) Of course Nintendo still has stuff coming as well.

Plus I'm curious if the Culdcept game will be any good. I think it arrives late summer.

Again No EPD team is working on a 3ds title.

Stop, Reggie. Now that it's confirmed Switch is the next home of Pokémon we all know 3DS is gonna die soon

We don't know when that game is coming. It could be a few more years. They're going to want the install base to be higher before they drop that. Higher and be in a position to easily manufacture more hardware. They're not going to drop that Pokemon game if they're still having supply issues. By the sounds of things that could continue into next year.

Stop acting like theyre doing this for the fanbase while simultaneously scrapping everything wii u related.
If the switch still makes them money 5 years later, theyll support it, if it doesn't, theyll toss it in the trash.
Simple as that.

It doesn't really surprise me when I check out the massive sizes of phones people run around with around now! :D

I'm glad it's finally got a decent sized screen, I'm curious how big an XL would be.

They aren't going to put all their eggs onto a basket that's currently got an install base of like 3 million. That's literal suicide. 3ds games are there to generate enough revenue until they get the Switch into enough people's hands such that they can actually sustain the company.

It's a pure numbers game. All of the consoles makers do this.

Do they even have a lot of internal teams working on 3DS games?

Ever Oasis - Grezzo
Hey Pikmin! - Arzest
Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon - Game Freak
Kirby Blow Out Blast - HAL Laboratory
Metroid: Samus Returns - Mercury Systems

That's the majority of their upcoming 1st party software for the 3DS so it seems they've moved on for the most part.

It's really just the difference between killing support immediately like they did with the WiiU(which was necessary), vs. twilighting their hardware as usual. Nintendo was releasing DS games for over a year after the 3ds launched. Although people were complaining back then, there was less of a narrative to push about the issue because no one was making the claim that both platforms were going to coexist. The minimal 3DS games being announced, and the fact that all major teams are working on Switch titles, should make it pretty clear that the 3DS will be finishing up some time in 2018, probably with a final Pokemon game(maybe a cross platform one).

Yes it is.

Deep into 2018 and beyond [2018].

That could literally mean into 2018, as in Q1, and beyond as in Q2 or Q3 2018. Beyond 2018 has the specific connotation of being the next year. At least that's how I would read it.
