Reggie via IGN: "Nintendo Will Support 3DS Beyond 2018"

Yes, that is exactly what I think will happen. They'll start bundling games with the Switch (perhaps BotW and/or Splatoon 2) starting 2018 at $299. Then an official price cut to $249 late 2018 or early 2019, before releasing a Switch Lite in 2019 at $179-199 that will fully replace 3DS as a handheld device.

Actually, the smart call would be to eventually move everyone over to the Switch and instead of releasing a Switch Lite, drop a new Switch (using a newer version of the Tegra chip).

This would essentially put Nintendo on a path similar to what Sony and MS are on, but with ARM based Tegra chips instead of x86 processors.

Think of it as something like the Xbox One X. A more powerful version of the Switch, but is still able to play the same games.

Switch 2.0 could slide into the $299 price point and the OG Switch would drop to the $179-$199 price point.

I knew this when they revealed Switch, people tried to argue that all projects would be just moved to Switch or be on both platforms.

I really don't understand people being upset at the 3DS support. Consoles don't just die, they wind down. For something like Metroid it's disappointing to not see the game on both, but other than that I understand.

As long as Nintendo does wind down development and doesn't just crank it up again for a successor. That would just be Nintendo making its same old stupid mistakes.

If all the big 3DS releases from Nintendo in 2017-2019 would get a HD version on Switch then everyone would be happy.

I'd get the argument if Nintendo had announced that Mario Odyssey was delayed to 2018 and instead announced Super Mario 3D World 2 only for 3DS.

But they're not. Instead, they're releasing some games that were outsourced to 2nd and 3rd party developers.

Nintendo's internal teams have already moved onto the Switch.

It's understandable. Killing really fast Wii and DS hurt consumer confidence in their products so I can understand they rely a little bit on 3DS for people who can't afford a €300+ console.

so the one advantage they had with the switch, using all their workforce on a single console, it's now void?

while i appreciate as a customer that for once they are not gonna abandon ship, on the other i fear is going to be a bad decision since as of now the switch seems to have failed in getting any kind of traction in terms of thirs party support...it's still almost an only nintendo console.

Pretty funny seeing a forum full of kids that grew up playing Game Boy, GBC, & GBA calling for an inquisition on outdated hardware.

How does Nintendo outsourcing some games to 2nd and 3rd party developers equate to them dropping the ball with the Switch?

All of Nintendo's internal development teams are fully on the Switch. With Yoshi, Kirby and Pokemon all getting Switch games, that moves HAL, Game Freak and Good Feel over to the Switch. Metroid is being made by MercurySteam, who had pitched a Metroid game to Nintendo back in 2015. Every Oasis is being made by Grezzo, who's last game was Majora's Mask 3DS released in 2015, and is their first game that isn't a Zelda game.

The 3DS getting some outsourced games has no impact on the Switch's 3rd party support. That's an entirely different can of worms.

This is the same company that said they are not killing the Wii U and then just went on and murdered it in cold, cold blood shortly after.

Well yeah, different situation, but they won't say they are stopping until they actually do.

My fear is, by keeping the 3DS alive, I get a feeling there will be a next gen handheld completely separate of the Switch. Not a feeling I should have as someone heavily invested in Switch.

One difference though is that 2D games aren't as rough at low resolutions as polygonal 3D games are, which is the vast majority of what the 3DS gets.

True. They should have done a non-XL new 2DS as well IMO

We still have no indication that any of Nintendo's first party studios are working on 3DS games, right?

If they're basically outsourcing 3DS games through 2018 that's fine, but it seems like all of their internal focus has switched to the... er... Switch.

Honestly I don't mind that they are still releasing 3DS games, but why those games aren't also on switch is baffling. How much would it take to quickly port this to the switch? They should just make a software emulator for switch and bam, entire 3DS catalog is available. They could also make some kind of dongle that plugs into the switch that accepts 3DS carts.

They have.

People are acting like Nintendo delayed something like Mario Odyssey for Mario 3D World 2.

And with their 2nd party developers finishing up their 3DS games (Feel Good (Yoshi), HAL (Kirby), Game Freak (Pokemon), Grezzo (Ever Oasis), AlphaDream (Mario and Luigi*), etc), I fully expect they'll make the move to the Switch.

All this leave is some 3rd party developers like MercurySteam with Metroid, who originally pitched a Metroid game to Nintendo back in 2015.

*I'm assuming Alpha Dream is handing the Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga remake.

If asked, do you expect Reggie to say otherwise?

Would he really say

'no we're going to kill it off?'

He would say this even if they legitimately had no releases for next year.
They said the same thing about Wii U before killing it off too.
PR speak or not I truly believe they'll continue supporting this thing for as long as they can. It doesn't make sense to ghost a platform that still performs well. That said for as long as it's around Switch is in for a hard time imo.

This is true too. The Switch is their (near) future. But the 3DS is still very much their present.

the focus of the internal development hasn't been on 3ds for a loooooooooooong while now.

how many retail games have they made for the 3ds in the last 3-4 years?

like 2?

i don't think its that simple. 3DS architecture is caveman stuff in terms of scaling with Switch

and expecting an acceptable emulation solution within Switch's first year is asking a bit much

I doubt we'll see much in the way of brand new game announcements going forward. Any new 3DS support from Nintendo will probably be in the form of late localizations. Isn't there a third Yokai Watch game that hasn't left Japan? Stuff like that.

This is exactly what people were saying for the 2017 and the lineup has obviously had brand new announcements so far.

I love my 3DS and I understand Nintendo's stance, I'd wish however for games to come to 3DS AND Switch.

Won't play the new 2D Metroid, because while I'm heavily interested, I'm not enough of a fan to endure the awful screen.

Release it on Switch, no formal upgrade needed, and I buy it.

This is how I read it. There are only a handful of 3DS games coming out this year from Nintendo. They have announced one game for 3DS in 2018, no? Moving stuff like Pokemon to Switch is totally contradictory to this statement.

nintendo is not in charge of keeping or moving pokemon anywhere.

An enhanced 2016 Pokémon game isn't really what I would call "brand new"

Also:

Metroid - Spanish company
Hey! Pikmin - C-Nintendo
Ever Oasis - C-Nintendo
Sushi Striker - C-Nintendo
Fire Emblem Echoes - last Fire Emblem game for 3DS
Atlus games - all DS ports
Kirby Clash Deluxe and the 3D one - eshop games
Dragon Quest 7 and 8 - late localizations
BYE-BYE BOXBOY - eshop
Tank Troopers - eshop
Yoshi - port
Mario Maker - port
Culdcept Revolt- late localization
Yo-kai Watch Physic Specters - late localization
Fire Emblem Warriors - cross w/ Switch
Mario & Luigi - remake
Monster Hunter Stories - late localization

I fully admit I don't know jack about programming, but you would think with the power difference a emulation program wouldn't be that much work. It could be inefficient as sin and still run 3ds games fine.

This is exactly what people were saying for the 2017 and the lineup has obviously had brand new announcements so far.

How many of those games announced are being developed internally at Nintendo, though?

That's a huge distinction to me. If Nintendo was sacrificing or delaying Switch games for the 3DS, I'd get the complaints, but they're not.

But GAF told me that Switch would have more support since they only have to focus on one platform.....so I bought a Switch.

I like my Switch

.

Oh god no, half steps are the fucking worst idea the industry has had since trying to gimp used games.

Claiming the 3DS lineup of 2017 beats Switch' 2017 lineup is as hyperbole as it gets.

Mario is the only exclusive that would interest me on Switch. On 3DS I'll end up having 4 or 5 new games this year. I mean, on 3DS you can actually play Metroid, while on Switch you can only fantasize about it.

nothing reggie or nintendo says really matters all that much here. if the market for software on the switch (and the 3DS) dictates it, they will kill the 3DS as fast as they possibly can. As long as people keep buying switches, and it adversely affects 3DS hardware and software sales, they will axe 3DS development in favor of the switch. nintendo is basically hedging their bets and letting the market decide

Speak with your wallets folks

I'm sorry, but with the amount of great video games available (especially in my backlog) I just cannot hunch over this awful little screen to play something anymore. My videogame time is limited as it is, I'm not going to spend it playing something on this little uncomfortable fucker. As much as I want Metroid: SR.... :(

I agree with you, just to clarify though HAL and Game Freak are also already working on Switch games. (That is, if GF was said the be the developer on the Switch Pokémon RPG mentioned at the spotlight, but I think they were.)

If you're used to playing on an XL, you might find the pixel density of the smaller model more appealing. If you very much want to play SR I imagine it would be worth a bit of discomfort though. ;) (Though an argument could also be made it would be worth it to see if it will come to Switch eventually also.)

Switch's first year absolutely trumps the 3DS and Wii U.
And the 3DS is only getting small outsourced games, except Ultra Sun and Moon which are just a stop gap till Pokémon Switch is ready...

I am so close to flipping my shit with all the people still even thinking they will do DP remakes on the 3DS

Great, I can keep getting use out of my handheld, my son's handheld, and my wife's handheld.

lol at the folks wanting them to drop support and focus on Switch. Yes, shutter support for a gigantic install base rather than make it last as long as possible. That makes total sens.

Just think, if they kept the 3DS around for years to come, they could condense the size to flat paper. We could fit it anywhere and even wear it on our wrists. The thing will have its own joycons the size of key chains.

But GAF told me that Switch would have more support since they only have to focus on one platform.....so I bought a Switch.

And guess what, it's true. You're getting a big first party title every month except for May. That's basically the best first party support a console has seen in it's launch year since maybe the Wii (or maybe even further back).

nintendo is not in charge of keeping or moving pokemon anywhere.

I know this, but when even TPC is dropping 3DS in 2018, Nintendo will surely follow suit. Nintendo has 'supported' 3DS this year in the sense that some of their lower tier studios have pushed games out for it (besides FE). Reggie is trying to push 3DS this year because of n2DS XL. All their mainline franchises are coming to Switch. I am still in doubt, but I guess we will just have to wait and see. Someone should make a chart comparing the number of first-party titles released on Switch versus the ones put out on 3DS in 2017.

You don't understand the relationship Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have.
