Repeating old arguments we've all heard before, Thanos is pronounced "Berenstein"

Soft G is correct. Hard G is for those are clearly trying to compensate for something. Also, what the letter in abbreviations stand for very rarely affects pronunciation.
The 'A' in laser doesn't sound anything like the 'A' in amplification. The 'P' in JPEG is not silent. PNG has an implied 'I'.

so do you pronounce gift with a soft G?

You've gone this far. Now, fully embrace your madness and pronounce every 'Gi' as a J.

"I have a 750 jigabyte hard drive."
"I'm looking to buy her a birthday jift."
"Waggle is just a jimmick."
"Why yes, I do like jirls."

Isn't Gigabyte meant to be read as jiga(soft g)?

People, come on.
Is just a word.

You can spell GIF as a hard g or you could spell it wrong.
It's your choice and it's fine.

i think he meant with the letters -gif- as their own syllable. Gift has the t tacked on and you can't separated it.

To my knowledge no word has gif as a single syllable

ungifted.

not sure why the distinction needs to be made in the first place, though. A word with a single syllable that has the "gif" sound in it: Gift. I'd imagine in more than a few regions, the t is pronounced so softly as to barely be there, if not absent entirely, essentially rendering the word "gif" anyway.

also, Scrabble Word Finders are great for these kinds of questions, apparently:

There are a couple multisyllable words in here with "gif" as a single syllable. Some of those words pronounce it hard G, some pronounce it soft g.

Here's the thing about this one. It doesn't matter how to pronounce .gif because you only need to pronounce it if you're talking about .gifs out loud. Which. Why the fuck are you doing that? Don't talk about the Internet out in the world. Talk about something interesting.

Man, I've always pronounced "PNG" as "pee - en - gee"

We need one of the mods who isn't a lunatic to fix the title I'm so scared

edit: I am ok with the Berenstein version. Best timeline.
