The first time I saw .gif, I pronounced it with a soft-G, and that works for me.
Yup.
Giraffe.
Giant.
Gif.
This is how I've done it since 1994 when AOL's internet browser received support for animated GIFs. It's how I've said it since and how I will always say it. I pronounced it JIF because I was familiar with the peanut butter and pronunciation, but I was not familiar with what it stood for. Even after learning it stood for Graphics, it never once occurred to me to pronounce it GIF.
No one fucking cared until some idiot on the internet brought attention to it. And the creator agrees that it's JIF. It doesn't matter what Chris Hardwick and all the other internet police say.
Pronounce it however the fuck you want. JIF, GIF, I don't care. I won't give a shit if I hear you say it one way or another in a video. But if you're the kind of moron who decides to complain or stop watching a video or listening to a person because of the way they pronounce a fake made up word which until recently didn't have any known proper pronunciation, then whatever. Just keep your complaints to yourself.
Pronounce it JIF. Pronounce it GIF. Or just call it by its entire name just to avoid argument. Just stop being such Nazis when it comes to pronunciation of words. This goes for all words too. Especially British English vs. American English.
The 'you pronounce it like the start of each word in the acronym' as a hard and fast rule doesn't work since I doubt any of you pronounce the 'P' in JPEG with an 'f' sound.
This is a good point too. There's literally no way to prove how it should be pronounced either way. It's language. And it's English at that. It's complicated and makes no sense. Pronounce it how you want. All I know is if I made up a word, even if it's an acronym, I'm going to pronounce it how I want.
Would this be a big issue if the GIF was invented today in the internet age and had a big release party where the creator came on stage and said "Today I am releasing a new image format. I call it 'Graphics Interchange Format', or 'JIF' for short."? i.e. if the creator told people right off the bat how to pronounce it? Instead of taking 25+ years to try and settle a debate? Somehow I don't think this would be as big a war if it hadn't taken 25 years. People don't like to admit they're wrong even when
proven wrong.
In the end...
